Abstract: Foundry sand molds and cores are provided which incorporate glassy metal reinforcing filaments. Molds prepared from the sand composition of this invention provide greater strength before and during metal casting. As the casting solidifies, the temperature of the reinforcing filaments rises, the filaments devitrify and become weak and the mold can be crumbled for easy removal of the casting.
Abstract: Multi-element transparent gemstones comprising pleochroic materials are provided which evidence enhanced colors or other unusual optical properties, based on the pleochroic behavior of the material. Doublet stones, comprising two pleochroic materials, and triplet stones, comprising two pleochroic materials separated by an optical rotator, are described. The multi-element gem may have a rotatably mounted pleochroic element or a rotatably mounted optical rotator.
Abstract: An improvement is provided in a method for the continuous casting of glassy metal alloy filaments wherein molten alloy is extruded from a pressurized crucible through an extrusion orifice onto a rotating quench surface. The invention provides a boric oxide seal for the extrusion orifice that prevents oxidation of the molten alloy prior to initiation of extrusion. At initiation of extrusion, the seal is conveniently expelled from the orifice with the leading surge of the extruded molten alloy.
Abstract: A process for rapid growth of large single crystals of beryllium oxide of a high degree of perfection is provided. The crystals are grown by top seeding in a substantially oxygen-and water vapor-free atmosphere from molten mixtures of BeO and one or more other metal oxides. Critical parameters include seed crystal orientation, rotation and pull rates and induction heating frequency. Resultant crystals are useful as substrates and windows in electronic and laser applications.
Abstract: A process for the preparation of alkylene episulfides or episelenides is provided which comprises contacting elemental sulfur or elemental selenium, respectively, with an olefin, preferably ethylene, while irradiating with electromagnetic radiation in the infrared to ultraviolet range. The alkylene episulfides and episelenides are useful in the production of a variety of functional polymers.
Abstract: A distributor comprising two substantially parallel covering sheets separated by a plurality of inserts provides uniform fluid flow through a cell and, consequently, improved cell efficiency. Additionally, the distributor, positioned between a cell's fluid inlet port and membrane spacer, reduces membrane flexing along the line where the spacer and adjoining gasket interface, thus diminishing the incidence of early membrane failure.

Abstract: A common-resonator pre-locked laser is formed by a jet stream dye pumped simultaneously by a CW laser and a pulsed laser. Laser pulses with greater than 100 W peak power in a band width of less than about 54 MHz are produced.
Abstract: A cathode assembly for a plural cell electrolyzer is provided which comprises a rigid cathode support joined to a cathode by a first set of connecting members and to an anode in an adjacent cell by a second set of connecting members. The cathode support and first set of connectors enable the cathode to maintain an essentially flat surface. The support and second set of connectors stabilize the cell frame and enable the anode likewise to maintain a flat surface. Thus, the electrodes in a cell may be set accurately flat and parallel to minimize the interelectrode gap and the cell voltage drop due to the electrolyte path, and, consequently, to improve cell efficiency.
Abstract: An improved apparatus for taking up textured yarn plugs into a cartridge is provided. The apparatus comprises a spiral-walled cartridge and means for rotating the cartridge about a vertical axis while moving it laterally. In operation, the cartridge is rotated beneath a yarn texturizer as textured yarn in plug form is deposited therein in orderly layers. Even with high-speed texturizers, cartridge speed is low. After the plugs have been deposited, the cartridge may be removed, and the yarn plugs may be pulled out for knitting or weaving.
