Patent number: 6822495Abstract: An exemplary skew-tolerant true-single-phase-clocking (TSPC) flip-flop is disclosed that reduces current spikes by allowing willful introduction of skew in the clock tree of a single-phase circuit design. More precisely, a split-clock TSPC flip-flop, which allows the flip-flop hold times to be met in the face of skewed clocks, which, in turn, reduces the maximum value of current spikes, can be substituted for a traditional TSPC flip-flop in a sequential logic circuit. The input of the split-clock TSPC flip-flop is latched according to a first clock signal, which was used in a preceding stage, while the output of the split-clock TSPC flip-flop is driven according to a second clock signal. The first and second clock signals can be skewed in time, but have the same frequency and substantially the same phase. Metal Oxide Semiconductor (MOS) device can also be included within the split-clock TSPC flip-flop to reduce power dissipation in cases of large clock skew.Type: GrantFiled: May 6, 1999Date of Patent: November 23, 2004Assignee: Telefonaktiebolaget L M Ericsson (Publ)Inventors: Alf Larsson, Lars Svensson

Patent number: 6662131Abstract: A device and method for conditioning a periodic analog signal to predetermined positive and negative desired peak values. The signal is adjusted using multiplicative correcting steps, which modifies the signal amplitude. An additive correcting step adds to the signal, a constant which adjusts the signal level in a positive or negative direction. Upon detection of a current actual peak value, the difference between the actual peak value and the predetermined desired peak value is stepwise reduced by repeated adjustments of the signal using modifying steps within a part of a period of the signal, each modifying step includes exactly one multiplication and exactly one additive correcting step.Type: GrantFiled: November 20, 2001Date of Patent: December 9, 2003Assignee: Optolab Licensing GmbHInventors: Hans-Joachim Freitag, Heinz-Günther Franz, Andreas Schmidt

Patent number: 6404736Abstract: A method and apparatus enables a Network Access Server together with a telecommunications switch to route incoming calls only to devices that have sufficient resources to provide a connection to the Internet. A set of devices, RPs, reformat incoming data from subscribers to a desired Internet Protocol. During operation, each RP performs self-checks to determine whether sufficient resources exist within the RP for providing Internet communication. An example of such a resource is an Internet protocol (IP) address pool. Each RP may have several IP address pools that are associated with individual Internet service providers (ISPs). If, for example, an individual ISP's IP address pool is depleted within a particular RP, then that RP signals as much to call routing logic. The call routing logic will not route calls for that individual ISP to that particular RP until the call routing logic receives another signal indicating that the depleted resource has been replenished.Type: GrantFiled: June 12, 1998Date of Patent: June 11, 2002Assignee: Telefonaktiebolaget L M Ericsson (publ)Inventors: Jari Arkko, Seppo Arponen

Patent number: 6381229Abstract: An uplink common physical channel (random access channel) frame structure with a separate preamble and data portion. The preamble is used by a base station to detect that a mobile station is attempting a random access request. The data portion of the channel includes user data, and pilot symbols that provide energy for channel estimation during reception of the data portion. A guard interval can be generated using a “filler” made up of dummy chips, predetermined symbols, and/or an unmodulated carrier, and inserted between the preamble and data portion of the frame, thus enabling a mobile station to maintain its power transmission and making it easier to implement such a guard interval in a WCDMA system.Type: GrantFiled: June 12, 1998Date of Patent: April 30, 2002Assignee: Telefonaktielbolaget L M Ericsson (publ)Inventors: Per Narvinger, Maria Gustafsson

Patent number: 6219557Abstract: A telecommunications system and method is disclosed for enabling a General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) node, namely a Serving GPRS Support Node (SGSN) within a cellular network, to be able to handle requests for Location Services (LCS) for a GPRS mobile station (MS) in parallel to other existing transactions such as delivering short messages or engaging in session management activity, e.g., data call connection. A new LCS transaction type can be introduced in the Connection-Management (CM) sub-layer of GPRS in the SGSN and the GPRS MSs to handle requests for LCS in parallel to other offered services. LCS can be multiplexed together with other existing functions in GPRS by allocating a new Service Access Point Identifier (SAPI) to LCS within the Logical Link Control (LLC) sub-layer of the GPRS. Alternatively, when a common LLC SAPI is used between different CM-sublayer functions, then a different protocol discriminator (PD) can be allocated for LCS.Type: GrantFiled: December 11, 1998Date of Patent: April 17, 2001Assignee: Ericsson Inc.Inventor: Theodore Havinis

Patent number: 6159186Abstract: Apparatus for providing control of infusion delivery using conventional infusion fluid bags includes an air bag which is pressurised by a pneumatic pump. A digital camera or imaging device is able to analyse drops passing through a drop chamber, by capturing an image of the drop as it passes through the drop chamber. The output of the imaging device is fed to an image processor which calculates the volume of the captured drop using the number of pixels in the image. An infra red detector detects each time a drops passes through the drop chamber, and the outputs of the both the image processor and the infra red detector are passed to a master controller. The master controller controls the fluid delivery process by counting the number of drops passing through the drop chamber and controlling a flow brake to achieve the required flow rate.Type: GrantFiled: March 12, 1999Date of Patent: December 12, 2000Assignee: WFT Projects (Proprietary) LimitedInventors: Terrence Wickham, Brian Clement Goemans

Patent number: 6151498Abstract: A telecommunications system and method is disclosed for allowing a Gateway Mobile Positioning Center (GMPC) to route positioning requests to the Public Land Mobile Network (PLMN) where the subscriber is currently located without the need for storing the subscriber's serving Mobile Positioning Center (MPC) address in the Home Location Register (HLR). When an external Requesting Application (RA) wants to locate a particular Mobile Station (MS), the RA contacts the GMPC, and provides the directory number of the subscriber that needs to be located. The GMPC then sends a request for routing information, e.g., the address of the serving Mobile Switching Center (MSC), to the subscriber's HLR. The HLR then returns the routing information to the GMPC, which can then send the positioning request to the serving MSC, using the MSC address. The serving MSC can then route the positioning request to the serving Mobile Positioning Center.Type: GrantFiled: March 9, 1998Date of Patent: November 21, 2000Assignee: Ericsson Inc.Inventors: Maya Roel-Ng, Stephen Hayes, Theodore Havinis

Patent number: 6138014Abstract: A telecommunications system and method is disclosed for optimizing multi-party calls within a satellite network. This can be accomplished by the Mobile Switching Center (MSC) that the subscriber is currently registered in receiving a multi-party request from the subscriber and determining the most optimal MSC for the given multi-party call. The subscriber can then be re-registered in the most optimal MSC, and either the subscriber or the optimal MSC can set up the entire multi-party call. Alternatively, the subscriber can be re-registered in the optimal MSC, which then sets up the call to the first party of the multi-party call. Thereafter, the subscriber can set up the rest of the multi-party call.Type: GrantFiled: February 27, 1998Date of Patent: October 24, 2000Assignee: Ericsson Inc.Inventors: Vladimir Alperovich, Eric Valentine

Patent number: 6002923Abstract: A transmitter subsystem is disclosed whereby the output frequency spectrum of a DDS device, for use in the transmitter subsystem, is frequency multiplied to achieve greater frequency coverage at the RF bands. In one embodiment of the present invention, a DDS device is structured in such a way that the DDS output signal spectra can be multiplied directly for direct conversion to RF or IF bands. As such, the requirements placed on the DACs in the DDS device are lessened, because the DACs require much lower sampling frequencies than those used in the existing technology. Also, the requirements placed on the implemented bandpass filters used for image rejection in the applied upconverters are lessened, because of the larger frequency difference created between the desired output and the image frequency band. In a second embodiment of the present invention, a DDS device is also structured in such a way that multiplication of the baseband spectra can be accomplished at the IF.Type: GrantFiled: November 7, 1997Date of Patent: December 14, 1999Assignee: Telefonaktiebolaget LM EricssonInventor: Karl-Gosta Sahlman
