  • Patent number: 5859481
Abstract: An apparatus for sensing the presence of an auxiliary battery connected to a cellular telephone is disclosed. An internal battery and a removable auxiliary battery are connected to the power system of the cellular telephone through first and second switches respectively. Connection of the auxiliary battery creates a current flow that is detected by a current sensing circuit which generates a current signal indicating the detection of current flow. A voltage sensing circuit determines whether the auxiliary battery can provide a predetermined voltage level and generates a voltage signal indicating the results of this test. A processor then utilizes the signals from the voltage sensing circuit and the current sensing circuit to control the pair of switches to connect the main and auxiliary batteries to the power circuitry of the cellular telephone.

  • Patent number: 5838674
Abstract: Method and apparatus for increasing the communication capacity of a communication system utilizing a time-division, multiple-access communication scheme. A broadcast carrier is defined which is divided into time slots which include a control channel and traffic channels. The traffic channels are used to communicate traffic signals with remote subscriber units. When the traffic channel is not used to communicate traffic signals, carrier signals, whether modulated with information or not, are instead generated, thereby to ensure that signal energy is detected by a mobile subscriber unit when tuning to the broadcast carrier. Two or more signals can be transmitted concurrently upon a single traffic channel utilizing antenna forming techniques wherein the antenna beam pattern used to transmit the two or more traffic signals together encompass an entire cell.

  • Patent number: 5769661
Abstract: The body of a connector assembly is attached to the ground of a cable internally disposed within an enclosure. The connector body has a radial flange positioned on the outside surface of the enclosure and a nut, threaded onto a portion of the connector extending internally into the enclosure, is used to secure the connector body whereby a ground connection is established between the connector body and the enclosure. The enclosure panel on which the body is mounted is connected to ground. A mating connector is attachable to a portion of the connector body extending outwardly from the enclosure. In normal service, the slot in which the connector assembly is mounted is covered. However, when necessary to access the interior of the enclosure, the connector and attached cables can be removed from the enclosure panel by removing the cover, loosening the nut disposed on the internal end of the connector body, and sliding the assembled connector and cable pair out of the slot.

  • Patent number: 5762668
Abstract: A method of and apparatus for deentrainment and mass transfer in a chemical process tower. The apparatus comprises a structured packing layer assembled with a second type of packing layer disposed adjacent the underside of a process tower tray. The dual layer assembly reduces liquid entrainment in ascending vapor flow and provides an additional region for mass transfer.

  • Patent number: 5678019
Abstract: A real time clock plus user memory and extra memory integrated in a single circuit with access to the extra memory either by direct addressing or by providing the address as data to specified addresses in the user memory. Further, the user memory has two banks with the same addresses, and bank selection derives from a bit in another portion of the user memory.

  • Patent number: 5623532
Abstract: A mobile switching center including multiple home location register platforms presented in varying configurations and connected to a network through a set of signal transfer points. In a master/slave configuration, a master platform is given primary responsibility for handling network service request messages, and dynamic data affecting messages are copied to a slave platform in order to maintain data integrity therein in the event the master fails and the slave must take over for the master. In a load sharing configuration, each platform is given primary responsibility for handling network service request messages of its "own" subscribers, and dynamic data affecting messages are copied between the platforms in order to maintain data integrity therein in the event one of the platforms fails and the remaining functional platforms must take over for the failed platform in addition to serving its own subscribers.
