    Abstract: There is disclosed a process for producing low energy vinyl dispersion resins which, in a plastisol, can be fused either at lower temperatures or in a shorter period of time than the normal dispersion grade resins presently employed. The new vinyl resin is characterized by being a bimodal resin, i.e., containing large particles and small particles of polymer in a predetermined size and amount. The small particles are a vinyl homopolymer or copolymer made by a regular emulsion polymerization procedure. The large particles are a vinyl copolymer made employing a seeded emulsion overpolymerization procedure wherein the seed is either a vinyl homopolymer or a vinyl copolymer. The final bimodal resin is obtained from a blend of the small and large particle latices by drying, such as spray drying, for example.

    Abstract: There is disclosed a process for making vinyl polymer particles that are spherical, highly porous and of uniform size and substantially no polymer buildup on the reactor surfaces. A dispersion or emulsion is first formed with high agitation comprised of an aqueous medium containing a water-insoluble suspending or dispersing agent, the monomer or monomers to be polymerized, a monomer-soluble free radical yielding catalyst, and a surfactant or surfactant system. The dispersion is neutralized with an alkali and then polymerized with stirring to a conversion of about 10% to about 30% and then continuing the reaction to completion with increased stirring, the stirring in both instances being no greater than that used in making the dispersion or emulsion. The dispersing agent employed comprises an unneutralized crosslinked interpolymer of one or more carboxylic acid monomers with a polyunsaturated compound having a plurality of terminally unsaturated polymerizable groups.

Excellent results are obtained when both a polyethylene oxide and a non-polyethylene oxide containing surfactant are used in the process of the invention. Rapid stirring or high agitation is used while employing a monomer-soluble free radical yielding polymerization catalyst.

    Abstract: This invention relates to the suspension polymerization of vinyl halides and vinylidene halides in an aqueous medium to make polymers and copolymers which are designed for use in making plastisols. The process is conducted in an aqueous medium using a free-radical yielding catalyst, and in the presence of a hydrolyzed polyvinyl acetate (polyvinyl alcohol) having a degree of hydrolysis in the range of about 65% to about 85% and a compound having a hydrophile-lipophile balance (HLB) less than about 3.5. The important aspect of the present new process is the use of agitation ramping, that is, changing the degree of agitation during the course of the reaction, and adding the catalyst to the reaction medium after the same has reached the reaction temperature whereby these are produced polymer particles which are dense spherical glassy beads having an average diameter in the range of about 10 to about 100 microns.

    Abstract: The present invention relates to a process for producing low energy dispersion vinyl copolymers which, in a plastisol, can be fused at lower temperatures or in a shorter period of time than presently available dispersion vinyl copolymers. It has been found that if, instead of adding all the comonomer batchwise prior to the start of the reaction, the comonomer, such as methyl acrylate, for example, is metered into the reactor continuously, or intermittently, during all or part of the polymerization reaction period, a dispersion vinyl copolymer is produced that has a lower plastisol viscosity for a given comonomer content. Plastisols made from the vinyl copolymers of the present invention have good flow properties and the fused films made therefrom have high gloss, high clarity and good mechanical strength, even when fused at low temperatures.

    Abstract: To "set" the relative angular disposition of cords in plural inextensible belts on an inflated green tire carcass before it is cured in a mold, a roller is provided which momentarily presses a belt upon the carcass, thus "printing" the belt thereon at a fixed distance from the longitudinal axis of the carcass, and thereafter releases the belt. The carcass is inflated into a toroidal shape so that a point on the circumference of the carcass is at a predetermined inflated distance from the longitudinal axis of the carcass. The roller is placed on each belt to be "set" so that the roller contacts each belt prior to printing it on the carcass. The roller biases each belt on the carcass toward its (the carcass') longitudinal axis, and it is essential that the distance between the bottom surface of the roller and the longitudinal axis of the inflated carcass is maintained constant while each belt is in contact with the roller.
