  • Patent number: 4564525
Abstract: Confections produced from flavor powders obtained from powdered roasted syrup of dahlia tubers. These dahlia flavored powders can be used to replace cocoa powder. When milled with a confectioner fat, the dahlia flavored powders produce a confection similar to chocolate. The powders can also be blended with protein, milk solids, fiber, carbohydrates such as starches, bland flours and sugars to produce flavor mixes which may be used as a direct replacement for cocoa powder and which can be ground with cocoa butter or a confection fat to produce chocolate-like confections. Foods incorporating these confections such as beverages, baked goods, desserts, icings, coatings, candies, syrups or ice cream are similar to analogous products made with natural cocoa or chocolate.

  • Patent number: 4524985
Abstract: An arrest device for a wheeled cart, such as a supermarket shopping cart. The device includes a hook and structure mounting the hook on the cart for swinging thereon in a front-to-back direction. The region where such swinging occurs is shiftable between lowered and raised positions to permit the hook to "walk" over surface irregularities by a compound swinging/shifting movement. In one embodiment, the mounting structure includes a leg pivotably attached at one end to the cart and at its other end to the hook. In another embodiment, the hook and connecting structure are formed as a unitary member having a slot which accomodates both swinging and vertical shifting of the hook with respect to the cart. In still another embodiment, the connecting structure takes the form of a spring which is continuously flexible in a front-to-back direction with respect to the cart.

  • Patent number: 4522490
Abstract: A method and apparatus for adapting photographic enlargers for use with various large format negatives are disclosed wherein a first large format negative stage is movably mounted relative to a lens stage of the enlarger for supporting a negative with its image focused upon suitable photographic paper or the like. A second large format negative stage is also placed at a selected spacing from the first large format negative stage by means of a suitable spacer to facilitate use of larger negatives, the spacer preferably being removable for permitting a single light source to be arranged closely adjacent to the second large format negative stage with the spacer in place and closely adjacent to the first large format negative stage with the spacer removed in order to achieve even, fully covered and optimum illumination.

  • Patent number: 4359282
Abstract: A method and apparatus for measuring vertical surface variations of a specimen is disclosed wherein the specimen is mounted in movable relation to an objective lens assembly, a reticule being arranged at a focal plane of the objective lens assembly, movement between the objective assembly and the specimen necessary for maintaining the reticule in focus upon different surface portions of the specimen providing an indication of vertical spacing between the surface portions. Another embodiment of the invention contemplates a three-dimensional reticule arranged at or adjacent a focal plane of an objective lens assembly for simultaneously focusing portions of the reticule upon different surface portions of the specimen, the reticule being adapted to provide an indication that the vertical spacing between the different surface portions of the specimen is within acceptable limits.

  • Patent number: 4142842
Abstract: A method and plural embodiments of apparatus for delivering a pressure-compensated supply of fluid to a hydraulic steering circuit, wherein first and second pumps are respectively operated by a vehicle engine and by a ground wheel when the vehicle is in motion, output fluid from the two pumps being simultaneously directed to the steering circuit by a control valve with inlet relief valve means modulating output pressure of the sources in response to operation of the control valve. One embodiment contemplates dual inlet relief valves for separately modulating output from the two pumps while another embodiment contemplates one of the pumps having a variable output.
