  • Patent number: 4398499
Abstract: A tray adapted to contain poultry eggs during both the incubation and hatching thereof, in a continuous operation not requiring removal or handling of the eggs between incubation and hatching, consisting of a tray body of sufficient depth to contain hatched chicks, its floor being divided into compartments each of a size to contain a single egg, loosely, lying on its side, said trays being adapted to be stacked to any desired height, and each tray having a removable cover capable of supporting each egg in a position with its major axis substantially vertical when the tray is inverted. Each egg is movable from its vertical-axis position, which is the incubation position in which development of the embryo occurs, to its horizontal-axis position, in which hatching occurs as the chick pecks its way out of the shell, by simply inverting the stack of trays.

  • Patent number: 4344821
Abstract: A process for carbonizing and then activating carbonaceous materials in a continuous process as performed by an apparatus consisting of an elongated, slightly inclined rotary retort into the higher end of which the material is deposited and from the lower end of which the product is removed, the material moving therethrough in the form of a tumbling bed, a system for introducing air in independently regulatable amounts into each of a series of longitudinally spaced zones of the retort, except a final zone closest to its lower end, in such a manner that contact of the air with the material bed is delayed for a substantial time after the air enters the retort, and a system for introducing superheated steam into the final retort zone as an oxidizing agent in such a manner as to immediately engage and thoroughly intermix with the material bed. Provision is also made for introducing air, rather than steam, into the final retort zone, in the event carbonization, but not activation, may be desired.

  • Patent number: 4323883
Abstract: A doorbell for pets consisting of a pair of scratch plates adapted to be hung movably respectively on the inner and outer surfaces of a door of a house or other building for yieldable movement toward said door under the impetus of a pet's scratching thereagainst, and an electrical system including an audible signalling device operable by switches mounted in the door and actuated by said scratch plates. Provision is made for maintaining operation of the signalling devices for any desired length of time despite merely momentary movements of the scratch plates, and for adjusting the force required to actuate the signals, both to prevent accidental operation by blowing wind, and to accommodate the device to pets of different sizes and strengths. The signals may be audibly distinguishable, to indicate whether the animal desires ingress or egress.

  • Patent number: 4297418
Abstract: A special component strand for wire fabrics, the fabric consisting of one or more of the special strands extending in spaced apart generally parallel relation, and spaced apart, generally parallel cross wires extending transversely to the special strands, each cross wire being attached to each of the special strands at its point of intersection therewith, as by piercing said special strand or by being wrapped or twisted tightly thereabout. The special strand of the present invention consists of a spring wire core having a sheath of tough but compressible material having alternating ribs and grooves formed longitudinally in the surface thereof, the ribs permitting easy indentation of the strand by a cross wire twisted thereabout, for a more secure connection, and a pair of opposite grooves thereof reducing the strand to a relatively narrow neck for easier piercing by said cross wires.

  • Patent number: 4280789
Abstract: A wheel for elevating water from moving streams, for purposes of irrigation and the like, consisting of a wheel supported for rotation on a horizontal axis, being supported for example by a barge moored in the stream, with the lower portion thereof immersed in the stream and having paddles mounted about its periphery whereby it is turned by the momentum of the stream water. At least certain of the paddles carry buckets which elevate water from the stream and dump it in a trough at a higher elevation than the stream level, from which it may flow for irrigation or other uses. The buckets are so configurated, and are movable relative to the wheel in such a manner, as to both dump the water at a maximum elevation in the wheel elevation, and also to provide a turning torque at the descending side of the wheel, so as to assist in its operation.

  • Patent number: 4266617
Abstract: A tractor having a frame supported by ground-engaging drive wheels, a tool bar carried by the tractor and on which various implements may be mounted, the tool bar being universally mounted on the frame whereby the implement may be raised above or lowered to the ground, and can follow the contour of the ground, a power unit also mounted on the tool bar so as to have a direct driving connection to the implement not affected by the universal "floating" movement of the implement and tool bar, and a driving connection between the power unit and the drive wheels, of a type not affected by the relative movability of the tool bar and tractor frame, in order that both the implement and the tractor may be driven by a single power unit. Mechanism is also provided for pivoting the tool bar to elevate the implement above the ground when desired, for supporting the tool bar while implements are changed, and for holding the implement firmly against the ground when required.

  • Patent number: 4258606
Abstract: A screw adapted to be driven by an ordinary straight-bladed screwdriver, the head of the screw having a cylindrical socket formed in the top surface of the head thereof coaxially with the screw shank adapted to receive the driver blade therein, the wall of the socket preventing lateral slippage of the driver blade from the socket and permitting turning of the blade, portions of the wall being offset resiliently inwardly to inhibit turning of the blade, and so configurated that a partial turn of the blade causes it to be gripped between portions of the offset wall to hold the screw releasably on the blade, so that the screw may be inserted in positions of difficult access, to resist rotation of the blade, more strongly after a further partial turn of the blade, whereby the screw may be driven by the blade with a suitable torque, and to yield completely on the application of a still greater torque, whereby to limit the maximum torque applicable to the screw by the screw driver.
