  • Patent number: 7470279
Abstract: A tool set for implanting a rod in a human spine in conjunction with bone screws. The tool set includes a pair of end guide tools that receive opposite ends of the rod in channels and under manipulation by a surgeon facilitate transport of the rod toward the bone screws attached to the guide tools. Intermediate guide tools having guiding pass through slots are utilized to guide intermediate locations along the rod toward associated bone screws. An attachment structure operably connects the guide tools to the bone screws. The guide tools each include a lower guide and advancement structure to allow a closure top with mating structure to be rotated and driven downward against the rod and to cooperate with similar structure in the bone screw to seat and lock the rod therein. A method utilizing the tool set allows a surgeon to percutaneously implant the rod in the patient.

  • Patent number: 7407404
Abstract: A double male electrical connector is provided to connect the female end of a string of Christmas lights with the female end of an extension cord suitable for plugging into a wall outlet. The inventive connector is particularly useful when Christmas lights are wrapped from the wrong direction so that after wrapping the lights the female end is loose. The connector includes a conventional conductive cord with a first end and a second end. The first end has a first male plug and the second end has a second male plug. Each male plug has a first lead and a second lead for plugging into a two-prong receptacle. In accordance with the invention there is no third grounding lead. In an alternative embodiment the connector has a safety cap on at least one of the male plugs for safety, i.e., when the connector is not in use. In the preferred embodiment the apparatus includes a jacket receiving the connector for axially slidable use so that both male plugs cannot both be simultaneously exposed.

  • Patent number: 7390040
Abstract: An end effector for use with a moving device has a frame and a plurality of operational members mounted for movement on the frame. The effector also has an actuation mechanism directly connected to a first operational member and is operable to move the first operational member from a first position to a second position, and from the second position to the first position. A linking apparatus is provided for linking the first operational member to a second operational member. The actuation mechanism moves the first operational member from the first position to the second position, and results in the second operational member being moved by the linking apparatus from a third position to a fourth position. The operational members can be pick up members for picking up items at one pitch and releasing them at a second pitch.

  • Patent number: 7377923
Abstract: A spinal screw assembly providing an adjustable securement of a fixation rod across at least two vertebrae. The assembly includes a pedicle screw having a spherical head portion, a threaded shaft portion and a tool engagement surface in the head portion for use in driving the screw into a vertebrae. The head portion of the screw is positioned in a body member adjacent a curvilinear surface disposed about an aperture in the end of the body member such that the shaft portion of the screw extends therethrough and the curvilinear inner surface abuts and mates with the head portion of the screw so as to define a ball joint therewith. The body member additionally defines a pair of opposed parallel slots therein adapted to receive a portion of the fixation rod and a locking cap bears against the fixation rod to releasably secure the rod within the assembly.

  • Patent number: 7343635
Abstract: A modular, multi-articulated patient support system includes independently adjustable columns connected by an adjustable base and supporting a patient support structure. Each column includes rotation, angulation, separation and lateral travel structure. The patient support may be raised, lowered and rotated about a transversely shiftable longitudinal axis in either horizontal or tilted orientation. The patient support includes a body support rotatably coupled with right and left leg supports disengageable at the outboard ends, that can be tilted, rotated and locked in place. An intermediate brace engages the base when the outboard ends of the leg supports are disengaged. The patient support structure may include two pairs of patient supports, each attached at the outboard end of a column and having a free inboard end. A coordinated drive system raises, lowers, tilts, rotates and laterally shifts the patient supports, which may be positioned in overlapping relation.

  • Patent number: 7322981
Abstract: A polyaxial bone screw includes a head member and a shank member. The shank has a capture end and an opposite threaded end for threaded insertion into a vertebra. The head has a U-shaped cradle for receiving a spinal fixation rod and a central bore for receiving the capture end of the shank. An expandible retainer ring with a radial split is snapped onto the capture end of the shank to retain it within the head. The retainer ring has a spherical outer surface which forms a ball joint with a spherical socket cavity within the head to enable the head to be angled relative to the shank. A threaded closure plug is tightened within the cradle to clamp the rod into engagement with a knurled dome on the capture end of the shank to secure the rod relative to the vertebra.

  • Patent number: 7285215
Abstract: A wastewater treatment process wherein a portion of a mixture of influent waste water and biomass are transferred from a first anaerobic region to a second anaerobic region having a relatively long retention time in order to produce additional very short chain fatty acids therein which are thereafter returned to the first anaerobic region so that biomass therein takes up the very short chain fatty acids. The contents of the first anaerobic region thereafter flow downstream into an aerobic region wherein the biomass takes up phosphorus. A portion of the biomass is returned to the first anaerobic region and a second portion of the biomass is wasted with phosphorus therein, thereby removing phosphorus from the wastewater being treated.

  • Patent number: 7240553
Abstract: The invention relates to a method and a device for the early detection of the presence of micro-organisms in food, particularly in milk and derivatives thereof. One of the main advantages of the invention lies in the fact that the aforementioned detection method can be performed inside the commercial packaging thereof without the need for said packaging to be opened. The presence of micro-organism is detected, before they can produce drastic changes in the physical properties of the product, according to changes in the propagation of elastic waves (velocity, attenuation and harmonic distortion) through the product and, moreover, different types of micro-organisms can be distinguished. The inventive detection method is performed under dry conditions and requires an environment with controlled humidity and temperature.
