  • Patent number: 5916153
Abstract: A modified Foley type catheter has a pressure sensor near the insertion end, an inflatable balloon, a temperature sensor, a light emitter, and a blood oxygen level detector near the light emitting means, all molded into the catheter tube wall. The oxygen level sensor is arranged to receive light energy from tissue illuminated by the light source. All required electrical conductors, and fiber optics elements if used, are molded into the catheter wall and terminate in a connector near the access end. The balloon has a fluid supply conduit, or channel, molded into the catheter wall and it terminates in a connector nipple near the access end. A pulse detector means is derived from the association of the oxygen level sensor and the required external signal processor. All associated external signal processor and output indicators means currently exist for observation and recording. Rewiring for suitable connector association with the novel catheter is well established in the art.

  • Patent number: 5904715
Abstract: The human breast is enhanced by enlargement by inserting body compatible fluids into the natural lactatous containments within the breast by flowing the liquid into the lactatous duct openings at the nipples. Flow is induced, from a source of pressurized fluid, by directing a jet of liquid into the duct opening, by pressing the fluid conductor against the opening or by penetrating the opening with a blunt needle or equivalent catheter. To ease penetration of the opening, suction apparatus is offered that distends the nipple to straighten the duct. Plugs are offered to enhance the fluid retention ability. The plug may be solid or valved to allow fluid flow only when a handling tool is inserted to manipulate the plug. Fluid emulsification apparatus is provided to condition fluids which may include saline aqueous liquid, compressible fluid, and autogenous materials individually or in combinations.

  • Patent number: 5894895
Abstract: A heave compensator for a drill ship with a derrick and hoist system with a dead line provides a line reservoir on the dead line. The dead line is reciprocated to move the hook load relative to the vessel to control it relative to the sea bed. The line reservoir is expanded or contracted by changes in ballast pressure to counterbalance the hook load. To compensate for heave and friction in the hoist system a pressure source is provided to augment the ballast pressure for hook load and position control. Sensors and controls are provided to anticipate and compensate for oncoming heave excursions. The dead line being flexible permits latitude in selecting and orienting the compensator machinery. As an option, the vertical movement sensor is placed on the hook related structure for more responsiveness to hook load movements.

  • Patent number: 5823785
Abstract: A floor standing base supports a work holding manipulator table that is adapted to secure a vertical length of pipe for welding at a prepared juncture in the mounted pipe. The manipulator table is attached to the stand by a gimbal arrangement that allows it to tilt relative to a vertical axis a limited amount in all directions. Actuators also move the table a limited amount in all horizontal directions. The table movement actuators can be interlocked to produce a specific movement of the table and a table mounted workpiece. For certification work, requiring specific movement programs, recordings are provided to control the movement and movement relationships among the actuators. The recordings are, optionally, produced in the field by movement monitoring transducers attached to pipe being assembled in the actual representative environment. The record playback system controls all actuators and permits adjustment of the amplitude and rate of movement of the table for calibration and training purposes.

  • Patent number: 5816479
Abstract: Improved welding method and padeye processing speeds up the connection of individual joints by peripheral fusion welding while the joint to be added stands vertically atop an existing pipe string also standing vertical in the rig floor. A plurality of welders can operate to speed up completion of the weld by removing heat from the pipe during the welding process. Heat is removed by the use of fluid cuffs near the weld area and, optionally, by using a spool within the pipe string to dispense expansion cooled air against the inner pipe wall in the vicinity of the weld. A special improved padeye is provided for welding near the pipe ends for handling. The padeye has a divided profile, a hole for a lifting shackle, and it will be accepted within the skirt of the lead system of the driving hammer. The upper end of the padeye can be cut from the pipe while the pipe is resting, on rig related structure, on the lower surface of the padeye.

  • Patent number: 5775444
Abstract: The housing of the orienting motor serves as a length of pipe string and rotates the lower end relative to the upper end. Rotation is in preselected increments each time the rate of fluid flow in the pipe string is changed between preselected limits. Once rotated an increment the housing is rotationally locked as long as flow rate is maintained greater than a preselected amount. When fluid flow is stopped, the actuation system resets, in time, to the starting position but a one way clutch retains the previous rotational relationship between opposite ends of the housing. Resetting time is adjustable to permit a preselected activity period before flow restart without further changes in the orienting action.

  • Patent number: 5727639
Abstract: An improved pile driving drop hammer of the free piston internal combustion engine type preferably has integral pistons on each end of a ram that reciprocates, usually vertically, in an enclosing bore. There is a combustion chamber on each end of the bore and exhaust ports situated near each combustion chamber such that the ports are opened, two cycle engine fashion, by the associated piston, after some movement of the piston, after combustion takes place to vent the active combustion chamber and then serve as intake ports when the piston moves some distance farther along the bore. At each end of the bore an anvil extends from the bore, axially movable some amount, to serve as an end to each combustion chamber. The lower anvil delivers ram impact energy to the driven piling and the upper anvil delivers impact energy from the ram to a free rising mass that is the essential element of this invention as an improvement to existing hammer designs.

  • Patent number: 5678630
Abstract: A well bore communication pulser in a shuttle package is arranged to aid in stabbing the package into the muleshoe receiving bore in the drill string, especially when the muleshoe is located in a drill string bore larger than the upwardly continuing bore of the drill string from which the package arrives when being installed. The shuttle package is provided with at least two elastomer centralizers separated along its length with the lower one just above the muleshoe after the package is stabbed into its bore. When the drill string is inclined relative to vertical the package sags in the span between the centralizers. The sag lifts the lower end of the package toward the drill string centerline by fulcrum action of the lower centralizer.

  • Patent number: 5495900
Abstract: A deflection control sub to be used with or as part of a down hole drilling motor, is a drill string element consisting of an upper and a lower portion connected by bearings for relative rotation about an axis that is not parallel to the axes of the two portions. When assembled ,and in the straight configuration the bearing axis has about a two degree angle relative to the other two axes. When one portion is rotated relative to the other one half turn, the axes of opposite ends of the sub are deflected about four degrees. The actual amount is a designers choice, and deflects the axis of an associated drill string that amount within the sub. The sub portions are rotated relative to each other by a drilling fluid powered motor in response to drilling fluid pressure difference between a fluid channel extending through the sub and the annulus outside the sub. A spring biases the opposite ends to rotate to the straight configuration until the motor overcomes the spring to deflect the axis.

  • Patent number: 5479995
Abstract: The sub, usable as a length of drill string which may include a drilling motor body, includes three generally tubular members and an indicator ring. Two of the members have tool joint boxes with straight threads one threaded onto each end of a double ended tool joint pin. The pin has no shoulder but has an annular ring separating the faces of the boxes. The annular ring is keyed to the pin but is free to move axially some distance. One end of the pin and the mating box has coarser threads than the opposite end and the mating box threads. Before the assembly is torqued up for field use the pin may be rotated in the boxes by turning the ring. As the ring turns the finer threaded box has to turn faster in the same direction to maintain contact between all faces. This changes the rotational relationship between opposite ends of the sub and provides control of rotational orientation of opposite ends of an attached drill string.
