  • Patent number: 4565554
Abstract: A steam separating apparatus wherein a first separating unit receives a steam-water mixture and discharges said mixture in a substantially tangential direction against an impingement plate to separate some water from said mixture. A second separating unit is disposed in a fluid flow relation to the first separating unit and includes a plurality of plates together formed into a closed circular configuration. The latter plates are shaped in a manner to define a plurality of irregular paths for the passage of said mixture so that said mixture impinges on said plates as it passes through said paths to separate additional water from said mixture.

  • Patent number: 4535801
Abstract: A gate valve assembly for controlling flow of fine particulate solids, utilizing dual seating surfaces and a slidable gate which are either or both purged by an outflowing gas. The valve body is constructed in two split parts, and the body seat surface contains a conduit spaced outwardly from the seat and having a plurality of spaced openings oriented radially inwardly. The gate contains multiple passageways and is connected to a stem adapted for supplying a flow of pressurized purge gas to the passageways arranged to prevent deposits of the particulate solids passing therethrough on the valve seating surfaces. The valve is usually used for high temperature service, e.g. at 300.degree.-1000.degree. F., the valve body and gate are cooled by a vent gas, and the valve body is covered with thermal insulation material. The valve assembly is usually located within the lower end of an insulated container and controls the flow of particulate solids from the container.

  • Patent number: 4520390
Abstract: A burner monitoring system in which an array of burners are viewed by a video camera adapted to produce a video signal representing the infrared image of the burner array. The video processing electronics processes the video signal to determine which of the burners is lit and which of the burners is unlit by the presence or absence of hot spots in the infrared image. The video processing electronics generates a video signal which is applied to a cathode ray tube device to generate a visual indication for each of the burners indicating the lit or unlit condition of each of the burners.

  • Patent number: 4504018
Abstract: A particle classifier apparatus and method for separating coarse particles from a mixture of particles carried in a gas stream, for preferred use in combination with a coal crushing mill. In the classifier, the gas-solids stream is passed through a plurality of internal upper angled fixed vanes for imparting a rotational motion to the particles. The rotating gas-solids stream then flows downwardly past 3-6 pivotable deflector vanes located entirely within the rotating gas-solids stream for effectively separating the larger size particles in the gas stream from the smaller particles. The smaller particles are then carried upwardly by the gas stream, such as coal particles carried by an air stream into a combustion zone of a boiler, while the larger size particles are returned downwardly, such as to a crusher for further size reduction and for recycling the particles through the classifier.

  • Patent number: 4498339
Abstract: A replaceable inspection plug assembly and method for its use with pressure vessels. The plug assembly comprises a collar seal welded onto a pressure vessel outer wall, and a threaded plug removably threaded into the collar and the vessel wall. The plug has a shoulder portion which is seal welded to the collar. For removal of the plug, the seal weld is first machined away using a special cup-shaped rotary machining tool. The plug is then cooled and contracted relative to the collar, and is then unscrewed and removed. Following inspection of the vessel interior, the plug is replaced in the threaded hole and the plug shoulder portion is rewelded to the collar to provide a structurally-rigid and leak-tight joint without need for subsequent stress relieving the welded joint.

  • Patent number: 4494392
Abstract: Apparatus for expanding a tube into a bore formed in tube sheet in which a primary explosive containing a relatively high number of grains of explosive per unit length extends within the tube coextensive with that portion of the tube to be expanded. An energy transfer cord extends between a detonator and the primary explosive and includes a relatively low number of grains of explosive per unit length which are insufficient to detonate the primary explosive but which be covered by a sheath to contain the debris and gases associated with the explosion of the latter explosive. A booster extends between the energy transfer cord and the primary explosive and contains an explosive which is detonatable by the energy transfer cord and, upon exploding, detonates the primary explosive.
