    Abstract: A cutter for cutting continuous stock materials into discrete lengths is disclosed. The cutting device includes a plurality of rotatable cutting tools or blades extending transversely across a cutting zone. The cutting tools are mounted in a common plane, are intermeshed, and are synchronously driven in opposite directions. The cutting zones of the intermeshed cutting tools overlap and thus the cutting device is capable of performing the cutting operation by movement in one direction through the material being cut. The cutting tools have opposed segments that carry cutting edges. In one form of tool, the cutting edges are spaced from the axis of rotation of the cutting tool by a distance that continuously increases in a direction opposite the direction of rotation of the cutting tool. This change in distance can be related to the speed of rotation of the cutting tools and the speed at which the cutting tools are advanced through the material being cut.

    Abstract: A process and apparatus for strand transfer is disclosed. The transfer occurs during the exchange of two winding collets in which the first, full collet, is shifted to the position where it is emptied while the second, empty collet, picks up the strand. According to the disclosure, the linear drive speed of the first collet is reduced; the arc of contact of the strand on the circumference of the second collet is increased as the second collet arrives at the position previously occupied by the first; the portion of the strand travelling from one to the other is engaged between the collets and the engagement of this portion is maintained and progressive breaking of the strand by abrasion is effected until the second collet takes up the strand. A novel device comprising a moveable means capable of introducing and maintaining the strand in position between the two collets and abrading the strand until the transfer has taken place is disclosed.

The strand is conducted from the strand-engaging elements to the starting drum and is wound on the collet until it reaches operating speed. Each carrier comprises a tray having gripping devices or claws for centering the carrier at the intersection of the crossed support wires which comprise the pallet. Tubular supports extending upwardly and downwardly from the central tray are adapted to hold the ends of spools in position on stacked pallets. The lower support is slotted so that it can extend beneath the plane of the pallet. A central bore extending through the supports and the spool tray allows for circulation of air and treatment fluid so that the spools may be treated with steam or other treatment gas while on the pallets.

Attenuation is preferably effected in two sequential stages, each of which utilizes a pair of high velocity whirling currents or tornadoes, with the gases in the two tornadoes of each pair turning in opposite directions.
