  • Patent number: 4146253
Abstract: The preferred embodiment of the invention disclosed herein includes a first sleeve member having a slightly enlarged diameter portion at one end thereof and a second sleeve member having one end telescopically received within the enlarged diameter portion such that said first and second sleeve members are movable between expanded and contracted positions. Also included is a third sleeve member fixed to the outer surface of the second sleeve member and extending axially about the enlarged diameter portion and a portion of the smaller diameter portion of the first sleeve member. The third sleeve member is radially spaced from the first sleeve member forming a pressure chamber which communicates with the interior of said sleeve members through ports formed in the enlarged diameter portion. Thus, fluid pressure acts in the pressure chamber to counteract separation forces in an associated pipeline.

  • Patent number: 4114805
Abstract: A damper assembly for conserving fuel consumption in a heating furnace comprises baffle means pivotally mounted in support means arranged to fit in an outlet flue communicating between the furnace and a chimney stack so that the baffle means is movable between a fully open position whereby the flow of combustion gases from the furnace to the stack is substantially unimpeded and a fully closed position providing a restricted flow path for the gases whereby the gas flow to the stack is reduced. Associated wth the baffle means is thermostatic control means responsive to the temperature of the combustion gases for moving the baffle means to the fully open position at a relatively low temperature indicating that the furnace is inoperative and for moving the baffle means to the fully closed position at a relatively high temperature indicating that the furnace is operative.

  • Patent number: 4107795
Abstract: The preferred embodiment of the invention disclosed in this application includes a building module having at least one compartment therein in which is contained a toilet system for bacteriologically breaking down solid waste and paper to provide a relatively pure liquid effluent. The toilet communicates with a flush tank into which the effluent is discharged and which communicates with a pump for pumping the effluent to an evaporator for removing excess effluent from the toilet system. Preferably the evaporator utilizes the effluent as a heat exchange medium for heating or cooling air discharged to each toilet compartment which air is circulated back to the atmosphere through a vent opening to help remove odors from the compartment. The evaporator may be arranged to aerate the effluent which is then discharged back to the flush tank so that it can be used to flush the toilet and enhance the biological breakdown of waste.

  • Patent number: 4078582
Abstract: The preferred embodiments of the invention disclosed herein comprise a first or main control valve means and a second valve means including a pressure reducing valve arrangement both controlled by the same actuator means. Initial operation of the actuator means opens the second valve means and its further operation opens the first valve means. The valve means are constructed and arranged so that inlet pressure provides a force tending to close the first valve means and another force which tends to open the second valve means whereby proper sequential operation of the valves is assured and so that the force acting to open the second valve is transmitted to the first valve when it is being opened.

  • Patent number: 4073306
Abstract: A steam trap in accordance with the preferred embodiment of the invention disclosed herein includes a valve body member formed with inlet and discharge passages and having a valve seat intermediate the passages that cooperates with a valve member to control the flow of fluid. The valve member is movable in a control chamber and is spaced from the control chamber to form an orifice through which fluid can flow from the inlet side of the valve member into the control chamber for controlling the operation of the valve. In accordance with one aspect of the invention, the valve member is made of a material having a different coefficient of thermal expansion than the material forming the control chamber so that the orifice size and the pressure drop thereacross vary non-linearily with temperature whereby the opening and closing of the trap can approximate the saturation curve of the fluid.

  • Patent number: 4015546
Abstract: The preferred embodiment of the invention disclosed herein includes apparatus for and the steps of separating glass, metal and other generally non-combustible material from refuse to provide a volume of generally combustible refuse, shreddingthe volume of combustible refuse into relatively small particles and mixing the particles with primary combustion air, which is used to convey the particles to a combustion chamber. Auxiliary burners are used to heat the combustion chamber to a predetermined temperature above which the particles are self-igniting and use of the burners is thereafter discontinued unless the temperature falls below the predetermined temperature. The particles are separated as they are injected into the combustion chamber with a cyclonic motion. In the combustion chamber the mixture is ignited and converted to combustion gases which flow through the chamber.
