  • Patent number: 4612000
Abstract: A single-ended metal halide discharge lamp including a fused silica elliptical-shaped envelope which is filled with a metal halide dosed high pressure mercury fill and wherein a pair of electrodes each having a metal rod with a ball on the end thereof are sealed whereby isothermal operation of the elliptical-shaped envelope is effected. A manufacturing process is also provided wherein an elliptical-shaped envelope is formed, a pair of electrodes having metal rods with a ball on the end thereof are sealed into one end of the envelope, and the envelope is filled with a metal halide dosed high pressure mercury fill.

  • Patent number: 4599538
Abstract: An improved hermetic seal means for use in an electroluminescent display device for joining the protective cover sheet (glass) over the base substrate. The base substrate has typically deposited thereon multiple thin film layers. The hermetic seal comprises an electrically insulative thin film layer disposed over the conductive thin film leads associated with the multiple thin film layers, and metallic solder means over the insulative thin film layer to provide a bond between the cover sheet and base substrate.

  • Patent number: 4598342
Abstract: A low wattage tungsten-halogen lamp with an improved filament construction comprising a pair of selectively activated filaments, each having a plurality of coil turns, being intercoupled by a relatively short intermediate member. Preferably, both of the filaments and the intermediate member are formed from a single wire. The spacing between turns of each filament is greater about the central portion of the filament than at the opposed end portions thereof, thereby enhancing visible radiation. Xenon gas, at a pressure of fifteen atmospheres, is preferably used as the inert gas fill for the lamp due to its low thermal conductivity.

  • Patent number: 4547702
Abstract: An improved dark field material for use in a thin film electroluminescent display device that typically includes a transparent electrode layer, a segmented electrode layer and an electroluminescent phosphor layer between the electrode layers. The improved dark field layer is of a composition of a dielectric material such as the preferred magnesium oxide and a noble metal, which is preferably gold co-evaporated by way of an electron beam deposition technique. The preferred range of noble metal by volume is 6%-10%. By varying the noble metal content within this range, there is provided control of the operating temperature of the electroluminescent display device.

  • Patent number: 4544980
Abstract: An automatic domestic power line breaker comprising a current-to-voltage converter to which is applied an input signal obtained from the secondary of a differential transformer coupled to the power line. The converter output is coupled through a low pass filter to a rectifier, the output of which is connected to a function generator, which provides an output signal comprising a voltage having a slope proportional to the peak amplitude of the rectifier output signal. The function generator output is applied to a first input of a comparator having a second input to which is applied a d.c. threshold voltage. The comparator output signal is applied through an amplifier to control the state of a set of normally open relay contacts series connected in the power line conductors. A feed-back diode shunts the first input and output of the comparator to lock the relay contacts in the open state if the breaker has controlled opening of the contacts.

  • Patent number: 4544091
Abstract: A process for bonding one or more target parts, such as yttrium oxide target parts, to a copper backing plate to provide improved mechanical support and improved heat transfer. The process is one in which a noble metal, preferably platinum, is applied to the target to provide an oxide free layer to which indium/lead solder joins. The solder step is performed so that contamination by flux or by formation of an oxide is prevented.

  • Patent number: 4536831
Abstract: A lamp member is adapted for use in a lighting unit having a light transmitting cover. The lamp member comprises a base, a tungsten-halogen capsule supported within the base, a first envelope, and a filament structure axially oriented with the first envelope. The lamp member further includes spacer means for maintaining the lamp member and the cover in a spaced-apart relationship when the lamp member is in the spring-biased position within the housing. The spacer means is secured to the lamp member and is in operative contact with the cover. One example of the spacer means is a cylindrical cap made of a ceramic material, the cap being disposed at the top of the capsule and secured thereon. The cylindrical cap is dimensioned so that the size of the replacement lamp is substantially the same size as prior incandescent lamps of which the invention is designed to replace.

  • Patent number: 4506193
Abstract: In an electroluminescent display device, an integral thin film resistor means including a plurality of discrete thin film resistors formed by thin film deposition and having a resistor in series and associated with each driven segment. In the preferred device the thin film resistors are deposited in a predetermined pattern on the back glass in conjunction with back glass electrode deposition whereby electrical connection is made to the electroluminescent device at the back glass.
