  • Patent number: 7471659
Abstract: A system and method for determining 1xEV-DO availability for a packet data call in a wireless device is presented. When the wireless device receives a request to initiate a packet data call, the device determines if it currently has access to a preferred 1xEV-DO channel. The determination can be made by consulting a 1xEV-DO availability list stored in persistent memory on the wireless device. If available, the wireless device originates the packet data call on the 1xEV-DO channel. If the device is using a CDMA system that has 1xEV-DO channels but the availability or usability of those channels are unknown, the device polls the signal strength on the 1xEV-DO channels to determine the best 1xEV-DO channel to use for the packet data call. If no 1xEV-DO channel is available or if none of the available 1xEV-DO channels are usable, then the device originates the packet data call on a CDMA channel.

  • Patent number: 7428421
Abstract: Method and apparatus for congestion control in a wireless communication system. In one embodiment, the status of a congestion bit indicates the type of adjustment, such as increase or decrease, to be performed at an access terminal to determine the next data rate for transmissions on the reverse link. The status of the congestion bit is determined by comparing a congestion parameter to a predetermined threshold. One embodiment implements an outerloop threshold having a margin with respect to the desired congestion metric threshold. The outerloop threshold is adjusted in response to comparing a measured congestion metric to the desired threshold. The outerloop threshold adjustment maintains the congestion metric to within a predetermined probability of exceeding the desired threshold.

  • Patent number: 7376425
Abstract: A mobile communications device initiates a handoff from its current base station (BS) sector network attachment point to a new BS sector. The mobile sends a handoff request over its current wireless link to the current BS sector, which forwards the request to the new BS sector, e.g., via a network link. The new BS sector processes the request assigning dedicated resources, e.g., an identifier and dedicated uplink segments information identifying the allocated resources is conveyed from the new BS sector via the current BS sector to the mobile. The mobile determines the time of the allocated dedicated segments based upon a received beacon signal from the new BS sector with known timing relationships to dedicated segments. The mobile breaks the original wireless link just prior to the time of the first assigned dedicated segment. The mobile communicates information on the assigned dedicated segments to perform registration operations, e.g.

  • Patent number: 7287079
Abstract: The present invention employs a method for coordinating communication of protocol processes within Access Terminals in order for the Access Terminals to successfully and efficiently communicate with the protocol processes within an Access Network. The method of the present invention can be used in conjunction with the current IS-856 standard. After receiving an indication of required configuration from one or more of the answering protocol processes, the SCP issues a configuration command to all of the answering protocol processes in the AT. If the answering protocol process determines that it needs to reconfigure any of its parameters, it accepts the configuration command and notifies the SCP that it has accepted the configuration command. Alternatively, if the answering protocol process determines that it does not need to reconfigure any of its parameters, it rejects the configuration command and notifies the SCP that it has rejected its configuration command.

  • Patent number: 7272138
Abstract: A novel method and apparatus is presented for providing transparent mobility of an entity within a network, by allowing the entity, which has a communication path set up between it and a peer entity, to move from one location to another, without informing the peer entity of this movement, and without having the communication path broken. The invention is applicable to decentralized networks using IP protocols, and is particularly applicable on networks where the mobility mechanism neither introduces latency nor decreases the available bandwidth of the network. In the invention, neither is latency increased nor is bandwidth utilization increased, as is done in other mobility models. Additionally, the invention utilizes standard protocols that are widely available from a plurality of equipment manufacturers on a variety of platforms. Thus, the invention provides a very cost-effective model for network providers that need to support transparent mobility within their networks.

  • Patent number: 7254158
Abstract: Techniques are provided to support soft handoff in a frequency hopping OFDMA system. Each sector concurrently supports “non-handoff” users and “soft-handoff” users. A non-handoff user communicates with only one sector, and a soft-handoff user communicates with multiple sectors simultaneously. Non-handoff users are assigned traffic channels by their sole sectors, and soft-handoff users are assigned traffic channels by their “serving” sectors. For each sector, the traffic channels assigned to the non-handoff users are orthogonal to one another and may or may not be orthogonal to the traffic channels assigned to the soft-handoff users. Each sector processes its received signal and recovers the data transmissions from the non-handoff users of that sector. Each sector then estimates the interference due to the non-handoff users and cancels the interference from the received signal. Each sector further processes its interference-canceled signal to recover the data transmissions from the soft-handoff users.
