  • Patent number: 6443091
Abstract: A drain alert device for detecting an overflow condition in a drainage system having a drain conduit, wherein wastewater is received through an inlet of the drain conduit, is provided, comprising an overflow conduit extending horizontally from the drain conduit below the inlet. The overflow conduit leads to an overflow detection device which includes a vessel having an internal volume sufficient to contain an amount of overflow wastewater. A buoyant member having an elongated, substantially vertical, overflow indicator resides within the vessel, and the overflow indicator is guided by a guide tube extending above the vessel. Thus, the overflow indicator reveals the extent of an overflow condition by protruding through the guide tube in response to the level of wastewater within the vessel. The vessel further includes a drain port having a threaded coupling capable of receiving a conventional flexible hose so that the appliance may be operated despite obstructions in the drain conduit.

  • Patent number: 6441603
Abstract: A method and apparatus for determining the thermal capacity of overhead power lines is disclosed. The apparatus includes two rods of similar diameter and material properties to the line to be rated. One of the rods has a heater inside that dissipates a known amount of energy approximately equal to what the line loses during operation at the static rating. The rods are oriented parallel to the line and the temperature of each is measured. Using this information and standard equations governing the cooling of power lines, a very accurate, real-time reading of the line's thermal capacity is generated.

  • Patent number: 6278364
Abstract: A passive warning system for communicating vehicular deceleration and other information through a warning light. A microprocessor-based warning system according to the invention accounts for variations in vehicular speed in generating a warning signal having an intensity level and a blinking rate related to the rate of deceleration of the automobile, the ambient driving conditions and the speed of the automobile. The microprocessor is also programmed to measure speed variations more frequently as the speed of the vehicle increases, allowing information to be communicated in a timely manner. In one embodiment of the invention, the microprocessor is programmed to maintain the highest intensity warning signal activated for a predetermined period of time in order to inform other vehicles of an earlier speed reduction.

  • Patent number: 6221254
Abstract: A method of purifying an aqueous liquid stream is provided, wherein the liquid stream is pressurized and contains proteinaceous materials, such as blood, and suspended solids, comprising the introduction of carbon dioxide into the liquid stream in a manner to reduce the pH of the liquid stream sufficient to cause coagulation ofthe proteinaceous materials. Specifically, it is intended that the pH of the liquid stream is reduced to a level below the isoelectric point of the proteinaceous materials, preferably at a level below pH 4.5. In a preferred method, the liquid stream is moved by a dissolved gas pump, wherein the carbon dioxide is introduced into the dissolved gas pump, and wherein a first portion of the gas is caused to dissolve within the liquid stream, and a second portion of the gas is caused to entrain within the liquid stream in the form of micro-fine bubbles.

  • Patent number: 5846292
Abstract: A gas chromatograph and method of chromatography are provided. Analytes, those compounds to be tested, are extracted from the sample by moving the sample into a column which has a stationary phase along the column walls. The column has two sections which are different in length. The longer section is heated and the analytes move to the shorter section. The longer section is then cooled and the entire column is heated. The device then functions as an analytical column and the analytes move out of the shorter section, through the longer section, and out of the column. A detector placed at the end of the column's longer section detects the presence of the compounds as they exit the column. In an alternate embodiment two separate columns are provided. One column is used as the extraction column and the other is used as the analytical column.
