  • Patent number: 6664728
Abstract: Field emission characteristics of carbon films are improved by changing the conditions of the growth of the films, by adding nitrogen, or substitutes to the nitrogen for hydrogen, in the carbon film growth process. Resulting field emission cathodes exhibit better field emission characteristics because of the increased concentration of nitrogen within the film.

  • Patent number: 6635986
Abstract: A plurality of field emission device cathodes each generate emission of electrons, which are then controlled and focused using various electrodes to produce an electron beam. Horizontal and vertical deflection techniques, similar to those used within a cathode ray tube, operate to scan the individual electron beams onto portions of a phosphor screen in order to generate images. The use of the plurality of field emission cathodes provides for a flatter screen depth than possible with a typical cathode ray tube.

  • Patent number: 6630023
Abstract: A film (carbon and/or diamond) for a field emitter device, which may be utilized within a computer display, is produced by a process utilizing treatment of a substrate and then depositing the film. The treatment step creates nucleation and growth sites on the substrate for the film deposition process and promotes election emission of the deposited film. With this process, a patterned emission can be achieved without post-deposition processing of the film. A field emitter device can be manufactured with such a film.

  • Patent number: 6616284
Abstract: A method and system for projecting an image. An image projection system may include a sensor configured to detect the presence of an observer within a proximity of a medium, e.g., screen, window. In response to the sensor detecting the presence of an observer within a proximity of the medium, one or more portions of the medium may be switched from a transparent state to a substantially translucent state. At a substantially concurrent time as switching the one or more portions of the medium to a substantially translucent state, an image may be projected onto such portion(s). Hence, an image may be displayed in response to detecting an observer within the proximity of the medium.

  • Patent number: 6613204
Abstract: Before submitting a sample, including a first material layered upon a substrate, to an ion milling process, whereby a second material is sputtered onto the surface of the first material and the sample is then submitted to an etching process, an irregularity is formed on the surface of the first material. The overall process results in the formation of cones, or micro-tip structures, which may then be layered with a layer of low work function material, such as amorphous diamond. The irregularity in the surface of the first material may be formed by polishing, sandblasting, photolithography, or mechanical means such as scratching.

  • Patent number: 6586889
Abstract: A ceramic actuator array is utilized to move a field emitter material for each pixel or subpixel to a level where an electric field causes electrons to be emitted from the emitter material towards a phosphor layer in an anode for that particular pixel. When the actuator is in an off state, then the field emitter material is removed to a different level where electrons are not urged to escape from the field emitter material. Thus, a display can be created using such an actuator array with field emitter materials deposited on each actuator element where each actuator element is individually controlled.

  • Patent number: 6580211
Abstract: A triode structure code cathode assembly is produced by depositing a carbon emitter material onto a substrate to form a cathode structure. Then, an insulating layer is deposited onto one side of a mesh foil to form a mesh assembly. This mesh assembly is then mechanically attached to the cathode structure so that the insulating layer on the one side of the mesh assembly is contacting the cathode structure. This entire triode cathode assembly can then be used to produce a field emission display device by including an anode structure.

  • Patent number: 6574712
Abstract: A data processing system includes a processor having a first level cache and a prefetch engine. Coupled to the processor are a second level cache and a third level cache and a system memory. Prefetching of cache lines is performed into each of the first, second, and third level caches by the prefetch engine. Prefetch requests from the prefetch engine to the second and third level caches is performed over a private prefetch request bus, which is separate from the bus system that transfers data from the various cache levels to the processor. A software instruction is used to accelerate the prefetch process by overriding the normal functionality of the hardware prefetch engine. The instruction also limits the amount of data to be prefetched.
