  • Patent number: 5697706
Abstract: A temperature probe assembly for reading heat gradients occurring in internal combustion engines or other components. The assembly has a plurality of separate thermocouples each having an inner junction mounted in an associated heat contact ring. These rings are mounted in spaced relationship on a tip of a cylindrical probe member to provide axially spaced and multiple heat pick-up points when the tip is mounted in a test bore in the cylinder head near the combustion chamber. Leads from the thermocouples feed to separate gages remote from the engine. The gages collectively detect temperature gradient by reading electric currents proportional to temperature occurring in the thermocouples during engine testing.

  • Patent number: 5687762
Abstract: A valved unit to control introduction of liquid fuel and venting of vaporous fuel relative to a vehicle fuel tank which unit is mounted on to the tank wall to effectively seal and isolate the tank downstream from a filler tube and related fuel delivery hoses. Tank closure is normally maintained by a closure spring which is overcome by introduction of fuel into the tank which allows movement of the inlet closure valve from its seated closed position and simultaneously opens an associated vaporous fuel vent control valve. When introduction of fuel is terminated, a spring returns the two valve elements back to their closed and sealed positions.

  • Patent number: 5680833
Abstract: A multi-chambered liquid coolant receiving bottle unitized from upper and lower plastic parts forming part of the closed coolant system of an internal combustion engine. When unitized the bottle comprises a pressurized coolant deaeration chamber separated by a convexly curved stationary pressure wall from overflow chamber. The chambers are arranged laterally side-by-side and are hydraulically connected to one another by a hose external of the bottle. The upper plastic part forming an upper portion of the coolant chamber supports a coolant filler neck that operatively mounts a pressure cap thereon. The pressure cap has a lower primary seal, an upper secondary seal and a vacuum breaker valve and cooperates with the filler neck so that coolant is transmitted to the overflow chamber from the deaeration chamber when the coolant of the system expands and from the overflow chamber to the dearation chamber when the system coolant contacts and creates a vacuum.

  • Patent number: 5673659
Abstract: A camshaft timing device includes a camshaft 10 and a drive gear 20 rotatably mounted thereon. An interconnecting shifting shaft 30 has spline 31 and 33 that interconnect with respective splines 16 and 41 on the camshaft and a hub of a drive gear 20. Axial movement of the shaft 30 causes the shaft to rotate the camshaft 30 with respect to the drive gear 20 due to the helical nature of the splines 33 and 41. The axial movement of the shaft 30 is caused by a drive sleeve 50 connected to a pinion gear that is driven through a worm gear 63 by an electric motor 67.

  • Patent number: 5673660
Abstract: A valve train for internal combustion engines utilizing an inverted bucket tappet with a pivot structure operatively disposed between the tappet and the end of the valve stem allowing the valves to be angulated with respect to each other and to the axis of the cylinder in both the transversal and the horizontal planes of the engine. Accordingly on a multi-valve engine, the valves extend radially from the associated combustion chamber to open and increase space in the center of the cylinder head for spark plugs, injectors, or pre-combustion chambers and so that the combustion chamber can be designed with a hemispherical surface, with tangentially disposed valve heads. The construction allows the use of large valves in conjunction with stronger, better-cooled valve seats and bridges. The tappets can be actuated conventionally by direct-acting overhead camshafts or by rocker arms and "T" bridges.

  • Patent number: 5661904
Abstract: A method of operatively coupling an engine connecting rod having an annular opening for a connecting pin with a piston defining apertures in spaced apart pin bosses with the apertures sized differently than the annular opening by use of a connecting pin having a non-uniform diameter, including: first heating the piston so that the apertures in the pin bosses are expanded; chilling the connecting pin; inserting the connecting pin through one of the apertures, the annular opening, and the other aperture; and returning the three parts to ambient temperature conditions so as to axially secure the connecting pin between the spaced shoulders.

  • Patent number: 5662083
Abstract: In an engine air assisted fuel injection system, it is desirable to provide a first range of air flow during engine idle and at low loading conditions. At greater engine speeds and higher loading conditions, a substantially greater second range of air flow is desired. This flow characteristic is achieved by the subject air metering device having dual valve members mounted on an axially positionable shaft. The valves are mounted so that initial movements of the shaft opens only one valve to provide flows within the first range. Further movement of the shaft then opens the second valve to provide flows within the second range.

  • Patent number: 5632239
Abstract: A three plenum air distribution manifold for intake air to an internal combustion engine with long runners leading from first and second spaced side plenums for delivery of air and recirculating exhaust gases into corresponding combustion chambers of the engine. The side plenums are connected at their outer extremities by an acoustically balanced cross over passage selectively closed by a manifold tuning valve (MTV) for improving engine output torque during low engine speed. A third plenum intermediate the two side plenums communicates directly with the combustion chambers through short runner passages opened and closed by valves (SRVs) for optimizing the output of engine torque during a higher range of engine speeds. The air flow through the manifold is controlled by an onboard electronic controller responsive to operating signals from the engine to change the characteristics of the manifold with different engine speeds.
