  • Patent number: 5357916
Abstract: A valve control apparatus and control for one of two intake valves in an overhead camshaft type engine having end pivoted rocker arms and combustion chambers each with two intake valves. The engine's cylinder head has a bore extending beneath the intake valve lash adjusters and has a shaft rotatable in the bore whereby in a first position the shaft supports all of the lash adjusters and in a second position, shaft eccentrics allow movement of the abutting lash adjusters so that the associated valve will not be activated. Consequently, the combustion chambers of the engine can operate with two functional intake valves or alternately with one functional intake valve and one non-functional intake valve.

  • Patent number: 5353992
Abstract: A fuel injection nozzle assembly (10) for injecting fuel into the combustion chamber of an internal combustion engine. A needle (26) of the nozzle assembly is forced upwardly against the downwardly directed force of a spring (28) by the high pressure of fuel which is fed through a fuel passageway (20). The fuel is forced through nozzle discharge orifices (50) which are in fluid communication with the combustion chamber. Each of the nozzle discharge orifices (50) includes a flow control orifice portion (52) having a circular cross-section which regulates the amount of fuel which passes through the orifices (50) and a connecting dispersing portion (54) which progressively increases in area to break up and disperse the fuel into a cloud-like mist that conforms to the configuration of the combustion chamber so that there be minimized contact with the walls thereof for optimized fuel burns.

  • Patent number: 5348353
Abstract: Connector construction for attachment of a tube to a conduit that has inlet fitting for reception of an end of the tube. The fitting has an opening normal to the inlet fitting to receive a U-shaped spring keeper in selected positions representing a preassembly position, an intermediate position, and an assembled position. Detents on arms of the spring keeper engage guide tracks in the wall of the opening to guide and yieldably hold the keeper in the three positions. Dog-leg ends of arms of the keeper secures the keeper and the tube in an assembled position in the inlet fitting. A semi-cylindrical opening formed in the keeper engages a collar or flanged portion of the tube to ensure that the tube is retained in its axially installed position.

  • Patent number: 5337704
Abstract: An improved cooling system for an internal combustion engine in an automotive vehicle which utilizes recirculating liquid coolant and provides an initial engine warm-up flow circuit extending: from a coolant pump, through cooling passages in the cylinder head, through a heat exchanger used to warm a passenger compartment, and back to the pump whereby a temperature responsive flow control valve or thermostat prohibits a flow of coolant from the cylinder head to cooling passages in the engine block which provides adequate cooling of the upper surfaces of the combustion chamber which are formed by the cylinder head while promoting a relatively rapid heating of the surfaces of the engine cylinders formed by the block.

  • Patent number: 5313924
Abstract: A fuel injection system and method is disclosed which includes a high pressure pump that supplies fuel to a high pressure common rail, a plurality of electronically controlled fuel injectors that supply fuel from the common rail directly into different ones of the engine cylinders, a pressure regulator that varies the pressure of fuel contained in the common rail, a load sensor, an engine speed sensor, a crankshaft position sensor, and an electronic control unit coupled to control the pressure regulator and fuel injectors in response to signals received from the load sensor, speed sensor, and crankshaft position sensors. Using the pressure regulator and fuel injectors, the electronic control unit can provide independent control of the quantity of fuel injected into the cylinders, as well as the timing and duration of injection. The electronic control unit can be programmed to accommodate various engine environmental and state conditions for optimal engine performance.

  • Patent number: 5309879
Abstract: A four valve, double overhead camshaft diesel engine (10) has a precombustion chamber (30) with an angled and tapered transfer passage (60) leading to the main combustion chamber (44). The transfer passage (60) is tapered to provide a larger lower end (62) facing the main chamber (44) and smaller upper end (64) facing the pre-combustion chamber (30). The pre-combustion chamber is spherical, located on one side of the main combustion chamber. Air passing through the passage (60) during the compression stroke undergoes heating and swirling within the pre-combustion chamber. The piston has a domed upper surface with recessed lobes (20) and (22). Each recessed lobe functions as a valve pocket for the intake and exhaust valves (32) and (42).

  • Patent number: 5308135
Abstract: A support of a water dissolvable material is provided for the installation of windshields and other stationary safety glass in automotive vehicles. The support guides and mechanically holds the glass in position until adhesive previously applied to the periphery of the glass cures and permanently secures the glass in position in a window opening in the vehicle body. Subsequently, a solvent such as water naturally occurring or intentionally applied to the support causes it to dissolve and disappear so that it does not aid in creating vibration and resultant noise in the stationary glass during vehicle operation.

  • Patent number: 5305847
Abstract: An engine/transmission mount for a vehicle including first and second brackets, the first defining an aperture, the second having spaced legs to either side of the first bracket. An elongated bar which has ends adjacent the legs and extends through the aperture is radially expandable whenever the legs are flexed toward one another by selective application of compressive forces on the legs by operation of a compressive fastener. While prior to operation of the compressive fastener the first bracket is free to slide along the elongated bar, radial expansion of the elongated member fixes the first bracket in a desired axial position.

  • Patent number: 5289627
Abstract: An improved fuel injector for an internal combustion engine generating very fine atomization of fuel even at initiation of the valve opening event and including a cylindrical valve element terminating in a semi-spherical end portion which engages a valve seat to close the injector, fuel quantity being controlled by cycling the valve alternately between opened and closed positions at a desired variable rate. Improved fuel atomization is generated by providing an annular space upstream of the valve seat, this annular space being so narrow and short as not to form a significant volume of motionless fuel when the valve is closed which would generate large fuel particles upon initiation of valve opening.

  • Patent number: 5288025
Abstract: An improved fuel injector for an internal combustion engine which produces highly accurate fuel delivery control by providing a precise closing of the valve without secondary openings caused by rebound or bouncing of the valve from its seat surface after initial closing. Valve rebound is eliminated by a hydraulic cushion formed between parallel surfaces of the movable valve and its stationary guide whereby a thin boundary layer of liquid fuel caught between closely spaced surfaces is compressed just prior to engagement of the valve with its valve seat. This generates an opposing force to the force tending to close the valve.

  • Patent number: 5287731
Abstract: An apparatus for testing engine lubricating oil under simulated engine operating conditions including a tank with an interior space containing a quantity of engine lubricating oil, an elongated tubular enclosure for passing oil from one end to the other, and an oil pump to cause oil to flow from the tank through the tubular enclosure. The tank includes devices to introduce oil oxidizing agents to the oil. A metal rod extends centrally through the enclosure so that oil passes along its outer surface and the rod is selectively heated so that oxidation deposits form along the rod. Examination and analysis of the rod and its deposits permit rating of a particular oil for its oxidation resistant properties.

  • Patent number: 5277612
Abstract: This carrier for a plurality of transistors or other semiconductor devices comprises a unitized body of plastics material having inclined guide surfaces between adjacent guide walls of laterally spaced positioning blocks extending upwardly from a base of the carrier. These guide surfaces and walls guide the leads of the transistors into laterally spaced openings formed through the carrier base which align with openings in a printed circuit board after the carrier is attached to the board by snap-in fasteners. The transistors are seated and held in an upright and aligned position on the carrier by integral leaf-type springs which bias them against the front walls of the blocks for subsequent handling and wave soldering to the board.
