  • Patent number: 8293110
Abstract: A sequencing batch lagoon process is carried out in a minimum of two earthen lagoons and provides the treatment of municipal or industrial wastewater. Each lagoon is operated on fill-draw basis in a sequencing manner. Raw wastewater continues entering into one of the lagoons while the other lagoon is at full liquid level. The lagoon at the full liquid level will begin to discharge when the other lagoon at filling mode is reaching the full liquid level. The lagoon at the drawdown mode continues until the liquid level is down to the lowest liquid level. The wastewater feeding is then alternated to the lagoon which is at the lowest liquid level. The lagoon at the full liquid level shall have no contamination from raw wastewater or the lagoon at the filling mode. The biological reactions occur under aerobic and anoxic conditions. The aerobic conditions occur in the liquid or above the bottom sludge while the anoxic conditions occur near or within the bottom sludge.

  • Patent number: 8042333
Abstract: An oil cooling and filtering circuit connecting a reciprocating fluid power hydraulic cylinder to a reversible hydraulic pump or hydraulic directional valve. The circuit consists preferably of a three-way, three-position valve and a purge relief valve, which functions to divert a percentage of the low pressure oil coming out of the cylinder work port to an oil cooler. Instead of the fluid simply moving back and forth in the line and become overheated due to fluid friction and repeated pressurization, the working fluid in the line to the cylinder work port is circulated out of the fluid line and gradually replaced with cooled oil. The circuit itself does not perform cooling, but it provides a means to send trapped oil to an oil cooler. A secondary advantage is to provide filtration to the oil that is removed for cooling.

  • Patent number: 7962199
Abstract: A method is disclosed for analyzing keratinized tissue, particularly fingernails, of a subject to diagnose osteoporosis and bone fracture risk. A Raman spectrum of a sample of keratinized tissue is generated. Broad spectral background features of the spectrum are removed, preferably by using Fourier transform analysis. Peak heights of Raman features of interest, particularly the S—S bond of cystine, are measured. These peak height measurements are normalized using reference peak heights of Raman features that are invariant between normal and osteoporotic subjects, such as the CH2 bending peak.

  • Patent number: 7842719
Abstract: The use of sesquiterpenes and, in particular sesquiterpene lactone endoperoxides, such as artemisinin and analogs thereof, for the treatment of hepatitis C virus infections. Artemisinin, analogs of artemsisnin and some crude Artemisia extracts were tested in vitro against DNA-viruses, retro-viruses and Flavivirida, (an important family of human and animal RNA pathogens). These compounds were also screened for anti-tumor activity. Strong activity of artemisinin was noticed against the bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV). As pestiviruses, such as BVDV, share many similarities with hepatitis C virus (HCV), we can conclude that endoperoxides in general and artemisinin more specifically have efficacy as treatments for hepatitis C viral infections.

  • Patent number: 7761967
Abstract: A method of assembling a metal shore post of a concrete forming assembly is disclosed. An outer telescoping tube is provided that has a main section with a first inside diameter and top portion with a section having a second inside diameter reduced relative to the first inside diameter of the outer tube. An inner telescoping tube is inserted for telescopic movement inside the outer tube. After assembly, a pair of pistons are inserted through access holes in the outer tube to provide a crushing force to the inner tube deforming it to create a region of increased diameter that is greater than that of the reduced diameter section but not so large as to prevent telescopic movement of the inner tube inside the outer tube. The increased dimension region thereby prevents accidental separation of the inner tube from the assembly, thereby improving safety and efficiency. Openings are provided in the inner tube in the region being crushed in order to control the region of deformation.

  • Patent number: 7758884
Abstract: The absorption and deposition of carotenoids added to poultry diets into the yolk of eggs produced by the poultry is improved by adding a carotenoid formulation comprising a carotenoid, a vegetable oil, a surfactant, a chelating agent, an antioxidant, an alkali and a solvent. The carotenoid formulation can reduce the crystalline nature of lutein for its better dissolution in the formulation and the diet. This new formulation is capable of making more micelles for an effective transfer of lutein from the formulations to the aqueous layer. The new formulation can increase the bioavailability of lutein in chicken biological system and leads to more deposition in the blood and the egg. The lutein deposition in the egg was consistent for an extended period of time when this new formulation was added to the diet. Addition of this carotenoid formulation to the diet increased the antioxidant power of the blood. Eggs produced by poultry fed diets supplemented by the formulation have in excess of 0.
