  • Patent number: 6553064
Abstract: A method and apparatus for minimizing the amount of time that a mobile station is to be out of communication with an “origination” base station while searching for a suitable system to which to perform a mobile station assisted hard handoff. After being directed to search for pilot signals in an alternate frequency band, the mobile station tunes to that alternate frequency and samples the incoming data, storing those samples in memory. When a sufficient number of samples have been stored, the mobile station retunes to the origination frequency. The forward link data is again received by the mobile station, and reverse link data can be successfully transmitted to the origination base station. After retuning to the origination frequency, a searcher in the mobile station will subsequently be employed to search for pilot signal offsets utilizing the stored data collected from the alternate frequency.

  • Patent number: 6546058
Abstract: A plurality of methods for achieving the soft or softer handoff process such that the performance of a system is improved. A first method is based on delaying the softer handoff process. A second method is based on reducing the power of transmissions from the sector having the weakest signal strength. A third method is based on eliminating transmissions from the sector having the weakest signal strength. A fourth method adds a new base station or sector only when the mobile unit is in need of additional power to operate properly. In all four methods, reverse link demodulation in each sector may continue with or without the transmission of the forward link. In all four methods the operation could be based on the signal strength of the reverse link signal or the forward link. It is also possible to combine two or more of these methods to create a hybrid method.

  • Patent number: 6546248
Abstract: A method and apparatus for generating an autonomous Pilot Strength Measurement Message (PSMM) by a mobile station traveling in a multi-carrier wireless communication system. In a multi-carrier system, the mobile station receives the pilot channel of a base station on multiple carrier frequencies simultaneously. Fading may vary from carrier frequency to carrier frequency. New pilot strength definitions are used by the mobile station in a set of rules transmitted by the base station. The set of rules determines autonomous generation and transmission of PSMMs by the mobile station upon detection of pilots.

  • Patent number: 6545989
Abstract: A method and system for communicating a frame of information according to both a continuous transmit format and a discontinuous transmit format. The present invention contemplates transmitting one or more data rates in either a continuous transmit mode (814) or a discontinuous transmit mode (812). The present invention contemplates continuous transmission only for certain data rates, and selection between continuous and discontinuous transmission for other data rates (810). Frames transmitted in the discontinuous transmit mode may be transmitted at a higher transmit power than in the continuous transmit mode (820). In one embodiment, the information is transmitted at a fifty-percent duty cycle during the second half of the frame when in the discontinuous transmit mode (808). During periods of non-transmission, an alternative system may be searched for as a possible candidate for hard handoff (816).

  • Patent number: 6542538
Abstract: Techniques to test a wireless communication link. A traffic channel is tested via a test data service option (TDSO) that may be negotiated and connected similar to other services. Test parameters values may be proposed, accepted or rejected, and negotiated. Test data for a channel is generated based on a defined data pattern or a pseudo-random number generator. Sufficient test data may be generated based on the generator for a test interval, stored to a buffer, and thereafter retrieved from a particular section of the buffer to form data block(s) for each “active” frame. The traffic channel may be tested using discontinuous transmission. A two-state Markov chain determines whether or not to transmit test data for each frame. The average frame activity and average burst length are defined by selecting the probabilities for transitioning between the ON/OFF states of the Markov chain, which may be driven by a second generator.

  • Patent number: 6542559
Abstract: A decoding method and apparatus include providing capability for decoding data symbols that were encoded in a transmitter by either a serial-concatenated code or turbo code in a parallel processing fashion. The receiver upon knowing the encoding method may reconfigure the selection of data symbols from a table (600) to accommodate the appropriate decoding process. Initially a data symbol estimate for a number of data symbols of a plurality of data symbols Xi, Yi, and Wi are determined. The estimates of data symbols Xi, Yi, and Wi passing to a first and second decision nodes (610, 620) include estimates for the variables in one or more encoding equations. A new estimate for the data symbol Xi is determined based on the estimate determined at the initial step and the new estimate for each occurrence of the data symbol Xi at the first and second decision nodes (610, 620).

  • Patent number: 6535478
Abstract: A novel and improved method and apparatus for generating a reduced peak amplitude high data rate channel comprised of a set of lower rate channels is described. The set of lower rate channels are phase rotated before being summed and transmitted. The amount of phase rotation is dependent on the number of channels used to form the higher rate channel. In an embodiment where two lower rate channels are used, the in-phase and quadrature-phase components of the two channels are complex multiplied before upconversion with an in-phase and quadrature-phase sinusoids. For a high rate channel comprised of more than two lower rate channels, the in-phase and quadrature-phase component of each channel is upconverted with a set of sinusoids that are phase offset from one another.

  • Patent number: 6529482
Abstract: A method and apparatus for dynamically adjusting the signal-to-interference ratio (SIR) threshold used to control signal transmission power in closed loop communication systems. The closed loop power control comprises an inner loop that provides up/down transmission power control commands to a transmitter based upon a comparison of the SIR for a received signal to the threshold SIR. The outer loop dynamically adjusts the threshold SIR using historic inner loop power control information. When it is detected that the inner loop is not acceptably performing power control, the target SIR is not changed, or may increased or decreased more or less than 0.5 dB or 0.5 dB/99, respectively.

  • Patent number: 6529527
Abstract: A method and apparatus for reducing transmission delay in a wireless communication system that carries packetized voice and data information. Interruptions in the traffic channels cause loss of synchronization between a header compressor and a header decompressor. Rather than transmitting resynchronization information on the traffic channel, the information dropped by an interruption is re-transmitted on a non-traffic channel in parallel with the traffic channel. At the remote station, information from the traffic channel and the non-traffic channel is reassembled before input into the decompressor. Alternatively, the non-traffic channel can be used to carry overflow information so that a higher average data rate can be achieved than the average data rate of the traffic channel alone.

  • Patent number: 6529487
Abstract: A method and apparatus for generating and communicating random challenge values to mobile stations is disclosed that does not lose the unpredictability of a truly random number but can be simply and economically synchronized across cellular systems. The method and apparatus updates a binary number that will be used in cellular telephone system authentication procedures by applying a first algorithm to a plurality of most significant bits of a first binary number to obtain a second binary number; operates on a plurality of least significant bits of the first binary number with a second algorithm to obtain a third binary number, and applies a block cipher to the concatenation of the second and third numbers to obtain the updated binary number. When the most significant bits of the updated binary number comprise an all-zeroes number they are replaced with the most significant bits of the concatenation of the second and third numbers.
