  • Patent number: 6381569
Abstract: The speech recognition training unit is modified to store digitized speech samples into a speech database that can be accessed at recognition time. The improved recognition unit comprises a noise analysis, modeling, and synthesis unit which continually analyzes the noise characteristics present in the audio environment and produces an estimated noise signal with similar characteristics. The recognition unit then constructs a noise-compensated template database by adding the estimated noise signal to each of the speech samples in the speech database and performing parameter determination on the resulting sums. This procedure accounts for the presence of noise in the recognition phase by retraining all the templates using an estimated noise signal with similar characteristics as the actual noise signal that corrupted the word to be recognized. This method improves the likelihood of a good template match, which increases the recognition accuracy.

  • Patent number: 6377814
Abstract: A method of supervising on the forward link in a high data rate system is disclosed, wherein a base station transmits to an access terminal on a forward traffic channel only when the base station has data to send to the access terminal. Each access terminal generates periodic data rate measurements based on the received forward link signal. Each access terminal then minimizes the period in which it transmits on the reverse link without being power-controlled by turning off its transmitter based on the data rate measurements.

  • Patent number: 6377809
Abstract: An improved channel structure for use in communication systems is disclosed. The channel structure utilizes two sets of physical channels, one for the forward link and another for the reverse link. The physical channels include data channels and control channels, and the data channels are further divided into fundamental channels and supplemental channels. Fundamental channels are used to transmit voice traffic, data traffic, high speed data, and other overhead information, and supplemental channels are used to transmit high speed data. The fundamental channels may be released when the remote stations are idle to more fully utilized the available capacity. The control channels are used to transmit paging and control messages and scheduling information. This abstract appears solely to satisfy requirements of 37 CFR 1.72 and is therefore not intended to be used for interpreting the scope of the claims.

  • Patent number: 6374122
Abstract: A 32 bit digital “amended electronic serial number” (AESN) is generated from a 56 bit “extended electronic serial number” (EESN). The AESN distinguishes each subscriber unit within a wireless system from each other subscriber unit. Two distinct methods are disclosed. In the first method, a manufacturers code field (“MFR”) is tested to determine whether the subscriber unit has been assigned an EESN. If so, then the least significant 8 bits of the manufacturer's code field (“EMFR”) are appended to the “serial number” field (“SN”). In the second method, each manufacturer generates serial numbers by applying a pseudo-random sequence. The “seed” for the pseudo-random sequence is based on the manufacturer's EMFR. This serial number is then combined with the 8 bit MFR.

  • Patent number: 6374085
Abstract: The present invention provides a method and apparatus for providing improved quality or power control by recognizing the delays inherent in a closed-loop communication system. The mobile station or receiver properly adjusts its forward link quality or power level thresholds or measurements with which it compares incoming frames or portions thereof to reflect the level it anticipates receiving (after the delay). For example, the mobile station can recognize that at a given measurement time, two outstanding messages have not been executed by the transmitter (where each message indicates a corresponding increase of 1 dB). As a result, the mobile station can adjust its measurement threshold down by 2 dB to more closely correspond to future power adjustments. If the currently received frame or portion thereof is still below the readjusted threshold, then the mobile station sends out a new message to request a further increase in the forward link channel.

  • Patent number: 6366561
Abstract: The present invention is a novel method and apparatus for providing transparent mobility of an entity within a network. The present invention allows a given entity, which has a communication path set up between it and a peer entity, to move from one location to another, without informing the peer entity of this movement, and without having the communication path broken. The present invention is applicable to decentralized networks using the IP protocol, and is particularly applicable on networks wherein it is desired that the mobility mechanism neither introduces latency nor decreases the available bandwidth of the network. In the present invention, neither is latency increased nor is bandwidth utilization increased, as is done in other mobility models. Additionally, the present invention utilizes standard protocols that are widely available from a plurality of equipment manufacturers on a variety of platforms.

  • Patent number: 6366779
Abstract: A method and apparatus for rapidly assigning traffic channels to a plurality of mobile stations in a wide area high-speed packet data cellular communication system. Mobile stations transmit access probes on randomly selected access channels to selected base stations to initiate traffic channel assignments. The access probe comprises a pilot preamble, a traffic channel request, and a pilot/data request channel (DRC). The pilot preamble allows the selected base station to easily detect the access probe transmission. The traffic channel request includes data that identifies the mobile station. Immediately after transmitting the traffic channel request, the mobile station begins communicating with the base station on both the forward and reverse communication links. The selected base station immediately supervises the mobile station's transmission power. The mobile station selects from a group of available power control sub-channels.

  • Patent number: 6366778
Abstract: A method and apparatus for controlling the transmit power levels of first and second base station transceivers, wherein the first and second base station transceivers are respectively associated with first and second sectors of a cell. The received signal strength of a communication signal arriving at the mobile station is initially determined. A power control value that is based on the received signal strength is then transmitted from the mobile station to the first and second base station transceivers. A first received power control value is next generated by attempting to receive the transmitted power control value at the first base station transceiver, and a second received power control value is generated by attempting to receive the transmitted power control value at the second base station transceiver. A common transmit power value is calculated at a base station controller for the first and second base station transceivers when the first and second received power control values are unequal.

  • Patent number: 6363102
Abstract: Coherent detection of high-speed digital wireless communications becomes more difficult when the frequencies of the transmitter and receiver oscillators do not coincide. A frequency-locked loop may be used to characterize this frequency offset by processing the samples received on a pilot channel. Rather than using the offset information thus derived to correct the frequency of the received signal, the invention realizes a considerable computational savings by applying a frequency correction to the despread pilot samples instead.

  • Patent number: 6360100
Abstract: A communication system that allows a soft handoff to be completed, even when the communications link between the active base station and the mobile station deteriorates before the mobile station has received the handoff direction message. The mobile station maintains a list of base stations that the mobile station is in communication with, referred to as an “Active Set”. In addition, the mobile station maintains another list of base stations that are proximate to the base stations in the active set. This list is referred to as the “Neighbor Set”. A memory within the mobile station includes information that would allow the mobile station to demodulate information transmitted from those base stations on the neighbor set. In accordance with the disclosed method and apparatus, the mobile station places a base station in the active set upon including the base station in a pilot strength measurement message (PSMM).

  • Patent number: 6356531
Abstract: A system and method for monitoring the load on a CDMA communication system having a base station and a plurality of users. A measure of voice activity in the communication system is determined, and a current value of frequency reuse efficiency equal to an initial value of frequency reuse efficiency is provided. A power determination is made according to the measured voice activity and the current value of frequency reuse efficiency. The current value of frequency reuse efficiency is updated using the power determination to provide a new current value of frequency reuse efficiency. The power determination and the update of the frequency reuse efficiency are iteratively repeated until convergence to provide a converged value of frequency reuse efficiency. The load on the communication system is then determined according to the converged frequency reuse efficiency value.

  • Patent number: 6356601
Abstract: Techniques for detecting zero rate frames in a received data transmission. A modulated signal is received and demodulated in accordance with a particular demodulation format to generate demodulated symbols. The demodulated symbols are partitioned into a number of received frames. For each received frame, a quality metric is computed and compared against a threshold value. The threshold value is selected based, in part, on the quality metrics of received frames. Based on the comparison result, the received frame is indicated as being either transmitted and received in error (i.e., erased or bad) or not transmitted at all (i.e., zero rate or empty). The quality metric can relate to an energy of a received frame, a distance between a received frame and a codeword corresponding to the received frame, or other metrics.

  • Patent number: 6351460
Abstract: A method and apparatus for high data rate communication in a cellular/PCS communication system is provided. Specifically, the embodiment provides for early assignment of code channel for signaling channels (F-DCCH) in soft handoff. Thus, rather than simultaneously assigning a code channel for signaling data and another for traffic data for a particular Mobile Station (MS) in soft handoff, the code channel is assigned earlier for signaling data. Some of the unnecessary Base Station (BS) procedures with respect to the signaling data may be eliminated. An embodiment includes the concept of early signaling from the MS to request a code channel for signaling data, optionally followed by signaling (at a later time) from the MS to request a code channel for traffic data. This permits the MS to have the F-DCCH in soft handoff before having the F-DTCH (Forward Dedicated Traffic Channel) in soft handoff without requiring the BS to skip any of its procedures.
