  • Patent number: 7046997
Abstract: A system permits trail capabilities of upgrade features for a wireless client, such as a personal digital assistant (PDA), without intervention of a remote service provider. The software for running a plurality of advanced features is preloaded, in a disabled state, onto the client prior to sale. The first time the user attempts to access the advanced feature a fault condition is triggered since this feature does not theretofore exist. The fault management system initiates a fault recovery routine in attempt to recover from the fault. This routine actually comprises the code that places the preloaded software in an enabled state thus beginning the trial period and allowing the user an opportunity to use and evaluate the advanced feature. Managed objects (MOs) associated with the feature monitors usage of the feature and such that the feature can be disabled when a threshold usage has been reached and the trial period is over.

  • Patent number: 6973236
Abstract: A tapered waveguide improves insertion loss occurring at the slab/waveguide interface of an optical array waveguide grating (AWG). The tapered waveguide has two segments. The first segment decreases from a first thickness, nearest the slab of the AWG to a second thickness moving away from the slab. The second segment has a substantially constant or uniform thickness equal to the second thickness of the first segment. The second segment may also have a swallowtail shape comprising a forked end having two sidewalls tapered back towards the first segment. Light that would otherwise be lost at the slab/waveguide interface is instead captured by the tapered waveguide which laterally channels the light back into the waveguides thus mitigating insertion loss.

  • Patent number: 6947229
Abstract: Two etalons in series may be angled to reduce parasitic reflections in the space between the two. The etalons may be soldered on either side of a post having an aperture there through to allow light to pass. Various sized solder balls and/or solder pads may be used to create the desired angle and to secure the etalons to the post. Alternatively, a lip on the post may create the desired angle. Once secured to the post, rather than aligning the etalons by pick and place methods individually, the post and attached etalons may be secured as a single unit to an optical system, such as within the cavity of an external cavity diode laser (ECDL).

  • Patent number: 6940363
Abstract: In a switching scheme mechanical MEMs switches are connected in parallel with solid state switches. This parallel MEMS/solid-state switch arrangement takes advantage of the fast switching speeds of the solid state switches as well advantage of the improved insertion loss and isolation characteristics of the MEMS switches. The solid-state switches only need to be energized during a ramp up/down period associated with the slower MEMs switch thus conserving power. As an additional advantage, using a solid-state switch in parallel with MEMs switches improves the transient spectrum of the system during switching operations.

  • Patent number: 6904067
Abstract: Wavelength lockers, which monitor the wavelength drift of a laser's beam due to aging, are tunable to adjust for manufacturing misalignments between its various optical components. Tuning is accomplished by adjusting the position of a collimating lens using a flexure. Adjusting the lens position changes the angle of incidence of a monitored beam relative to a fixed filter and detector and avoids the challenging manufacturing task of rotating the filter and detector to achieve the same result.
