  • Patent number: 7190705
Abstract: Various embodiments include modelocked fiber laser resonators that may be coupled with optical amplifiers. An isolator may separate the laser resonator from the amplifier, although certain embodiments exclude such an isolator. A reflective optical element on one end of the resonator having a relatively low reflectivity may be employed to couple light from the laser resonator to the amplifier. Enhanced pulse-width control may be provided with concatenated sections of both polarization-maintaining and non-polarization-maintaining fibers. Apodized fiber Bragg gratings and integrated fiber polarizers may be also be included in the laser cavity to assist in linearly polarizing the output of the cavity. Very short pulses with a large optical bandwidth may be obtained by matching the dispersion value of the fiber Bragg grating to the inverse of the dispersion of the intra-cavity fiber. Frequency comb sources may be constructed from such modelocked fiber oscillators.

  • Patent number: 7190261
Abstract: An arrhythmia alarm processor has a pattern extractor and a predetermined reference pattern. The pattern extractor has an output responsive to short duration, intermittent oxygen desaturations of a patient as determined by a fast blood oxygen saturation processor incorporated within a pulse oximeter. The reference pattern is indicative of a series of oxygen desaturations resulting from an irregular heartbeat. An alarm is triggered when the pattern extractor output matches the predetermined reference pattern.

  • Patent number: 7189648
Abstract: One embodiment of the invention relates to a method for fabricating a semiconductor device having a semiconductor structure with a silicon region which forms at least one connection region in and/or on a surface of a substrate. The method comprises forming a metal cluster layer from a first, non-siliciding metal, followed by the deposition of a metal layer consisting of a second, siliciding metal. A subsequent heat treatment is responsible for forming a metal silicide from the second metal, the atoms of the first metal being displaced in a direction substantially perpendicular to the surface of the substrate. According to one embodiment of the invention, the atoms of the first metal are displaced by the Kirkendall effect to beneath the metal silicide. If an MOST, for example, is being fabricated, this has advantages both at the location of the source and drain region and at the location of the gate electrode.

  • Patent number: 7187140
Abstract: An efficient and flexible current-mode driver delivers power to one or more light sources in a backlight system. In one application, the current-mode driver is configured as an inverter with an input current regulator, a non-resonant polarity-switching network, and a closely-coupled output transformer. The input current regulator can output a regulated current source in a variety of programmable wave shapes. The current-mode driver may further include a rectifier circuit and a second polarity-switching network between the closely-coupled output transformer and a lamp load. In another application, the current-mode driver delivers power to a plurality of light sources in substantially one polarity by providing a regulated current to a network of time-sharing semiconductor switches coupled in series with different light sources coupled across each semiconductor switch.

  • Patent number: 7188362
Abstract: A system and method of authenticating users and data. One embodiment of the invention includes a smart card that digitally signs a message in response to authenticating biometric information that is provided by a user. The smart card may include a random number generator and an encryption module. In an enrollment mode, the biometric data analyzer receives biometric data from a user and triggers the random number generator to create a public key and a private key. The private key is stored in a tamper-resistant component on the smart card. The public key is transmitted to an external device, such as a computer, via a card reader interface. During a signing mode, the smart card digitally signs incoming messages subsequent to verifying the biometric information that is provided by the user.

  • Patent number: 7185716
Abstract: A downhole drilling tractor for moving within a borehole comprises a tractor body, two packerfeet, two aft propulsion cylinders, and two forward propulsion cylinders. The body comprises aft and forward shafts and a central control assembly. The packerfeet and propulsion cylinders are slidably engaged with the tractor body. Drilling fluid can be delivered to the packerfeet to cause the packerfeet to grip onto the borehole wall. Drilling fluid can be delivered to the propulsion cylinders to selectively provide downhole or uphole hydraulic thrust to the tractor body. The tractor receives drilling fluid from a drill string extending to the surface. A system of spool valves in the control assembly controls the distribution of drilling fluid to the packerfeet and cylinders. The valve positions are controlled by motors. A programmable electronic logic component on the tractor receives control signals from the surface and feedback signals from various sensors on the tool.
