  • Patent number: 6449328
Abstract: Disclosed is a method and apparatus for shifting data from registers. Bits from N registers are shifted as input to a first set of M multiplexors. Control signals are sent into each of the first set of M multiplexors to select bits inputted from one of the registers. The selected bits are outputted to each of a second set of M multiplexors. Control signals are then sent into each of the second set of M multiplexors to select bits inputted from each of the first set of multiplexors.

  • Patent number: 6449697
Abstract: Disclosed is a method, system, and program for prestaging data into cache from a storage system in preparation for data transfer operations. A first processing unit communicates data transfer operations to a second processing unit that controls access to the storage system. The first processing unit determines addressable locations in the storage system of data to prestage into cache and generates a data structure capable of indicating contiguous and non-contiguous addressable locations addressable locations in the storage system including the data to prestage into the cache. The first processing unit transmits a prestage command to the second processing unit. The prestage command causes the second processing unit to prestage into cache the data at the addressable locations indicated in the data structure. The first processing unit then requests data at the addressable locations indicated in the data structure. In response, the second processing unit returns the requested data from the cache.

  • Patent number: 6449678
Abstract: Disclosed is a system for processing read/write transactions from a plurality of agents over a bus. The bridge includes at least one request buffer for each agent in communication with the bridge. The request buffer for an agent buffers transactions originating from that agent. The bridge further includes a return buffer for each agent in communication with the bridge. The return buffer for an agent buffers return data in connection with a transaction. Address translation circuitry is in communication with the bus and request and return buffers. The address translation circuitry locates a request buffer to queue the transaction, such that a transaction is stored in the request buffer corresponding to the agent that originated the transaction. Further, the address translation circuitry stores read return data for a read transaction in the return buffer corresponding to the agent originating the transaction.

  • Patent number: 6447691
Abstract: Certain embodiments provide a plasma etching apparatus and a method for detecting the end point of plasma etching, which can more accurately detect the end point of plasma etching. A radiofrequency wave generated in a radiofrequency generating system 5 propagates through a lead line 30 and is applied to a cathode 9 in a plasma chamber 1. Plasma 11 thereby is generated in the plasma chamber and selectively etches a semiconductor wafer 12. A RF probe 8 measures the voltage and current of the radiofrequency wave flowing in the lead line 30. A determination system 15 may determine the end point of the plasma etching on the basis of either the voltage or current, whichever changes first.

  • Patent number: 6446063
Abstract: Disclosed is a system, method, and program for performing a join operation on a multi-column table and at least two satellite tables having a join condition. Each satellite table is comprised of multiple rows and at least one join column. Each multi-column table is comprised of multiple rows and at least one column corresponding to the join column in each satellite table. A join operation is performed on the rows of the satellite tables to generate a first join result comprising concatenations of the rows of the satellite tables. Less than all the concatenated rows in the first join result that satisfy the join condition are then selected. The selected concatenated rows in the first join result are then joined to the multi-column table.

  • Patent number: 6442754
Abstract: Disclosed is a method, system, program, and data structure for installing a program onto a computer including an operating system. Dependency objects indicate a dependent component on which the program to install depends. The program processes the dependency objects before installing the program and determines an operating system command that is capable of determining whether the dependent component indicated in the dependency object is installed in the computer. The program then executes the operating system command to determine whether the dependent components indicated in the dependency objects are installed in the computer. An indication is made as to the dependent components that are not installed after determining that dependent components are not installed.

  • Patent number: 6442601
Abstract: Disclosed is a system, method, and program for caching files retrieved from a server over a network. A computer system receives a request from a requesting computer system for a file maintained on the server. The computer system is capable of communicating with the server via the network. The computer system retrieves the requested file from the server over the network and stores a copy of the requested file in a primary storage. The computer system further returns another copy of the requested file to the requesting computer system. The computer system determines retrieved files to migrate from the primary storage to a secondary storage and migrates the determined retrieved files from the primary storage to the secondary storage. To determine the files to migrate from primary storage to secondary storage, the computer system may determine a distribution of file requests per unit of time according to file size for files maintained in the primary storage and the secondary storage.

  • Patent number: 6438651
Abstract: Provided is a system, method, and program for managing read and write requests to a cache to process enqueue and dequeue operations for a queue. Upon receiving a data access request to a data block in a memory, a determination is made as to whether any data block is maintained in a cache line entry in the cache. If so, a cache line entry maintaining the data block is accessed to perform the data access request. A first flag, such as a read flag, associated with the accessed cache line entry is set “on” if the data access request is a read request. Further, if the data access request is a write request to update the data block in the memory, a second flag, such as a write flag, associated with the cache line entry including the data to update may be set “on”. The update data may be data to be enqueued onto a queue, where the queue may be, but is not limited to, a circular buffer in the memory having a head and tail pointer.

  • Patent number: 6438661
Abstract: Disclosed is a method, system, and article of manufacture for processing modified meta data for data recovery operations. The meta data provides information on user data maintained in a storage device. The system determines whether meta data tracks maintained in a cache were modified and indicates in a non-volatile memory that the determined meta data tracks were modified. Data recovery operations may be initiated as a result of a system failure, such as a warmstart or coldstart recovery. During such data recovery operations, the system processes the non-volatile memory and the indications of modified meta data tracks therein to rebuild lost meta data tracks in the cache.

  • Patent number: 6427198
Abstract: Disclosed is a system, method, and program for determining the configuration of a computer system having a planar board, a planar bus, and attached planar devices. A read operation is performed on planar configuration memory indicating addresses for each planar device capable of being attached to the planar board. A read command is then sent to the address of each planar device indicated in the planar configuration memory to determine if each planar device is available. A configuration memory for each available planar device is read to determine configuration information and if there are addresses of attached devices accessible through the planar device. A read command is then sent to the address of each attached device indicated in the configuration memory of the planar device to determine configuration information for each attached device and if there are further attached devices accessible through the attached device.

  • Patent number: 6425023
Abstract: Disclosed is a bridge system for processing read and write transactions over a bus in which in a preferred embodiment continuous read data obtained from a target device in a number of separate read operations over a secondary bus may be gathered by the bridge and assembled into a larger block of data before forwarding the data over the primary bus to the requesting agent. As a consequence, the transmission of optimal, address boundary-aligned bursts of read data over the primary bus may be increased and conversely, the transmission of fractionated, nonaligned read data over the primary bus may be reduced. Because each agent is assigned particular buffers, read data may be gathered concurrently in the assigned bridge buffers without assertion of a read request by one agent causing the flushing of the data being gathered for a different agent.

  • Patent number: 6425051
Abstract: Provided are a system, method, program, and data structure for processing a request for data in a first format that is superimposed on blocks of data stored in a second format in a storage device. A data structure for a storage unit in the first format including the requested data is accessed. There is one data structure for each storage unit in the first format being accessed. Further, at least one cache page storing blocks of data in the second format is needed to store one storage unit in the first format. A determination is made of one or more storage blocks in the second format that include the requested data.
