Patent number: 7137646Abstract: An inflator 10 of a vehicle occupant protection system, for example, contains an elongated housing 12 having a first end 14 and a second 16. The gas generator 10 includes a sealed pressurized gas supply or gas tank 18 in fluid communication with the first end 14 upon inflator 10 operation. A first seal 36 seals the first end 14 prior to gas generator 10 operation. A notched support member 56 is wedged within the housing 12 and fixes the first seal 36 against a sealed opening 24 of the gas tank 18, thereby preventing fluid flow during gas generator 10 inactivity. Upon gas generator 10 activation, the support member 56 is fractured by a force produced by an initiator 68 thereby releasing pressurized gas into the first end 14 and through the housing 12.Type: GrantFiled: November 14, 2003Date of Patent: November 21, 2006Assignee: Automotive Systems Laboratory, Inc.Inventors: Jeffery S. Patent number: 7134690Abstract: A solid propellant gas generator contains a bed of agglomerated or beaded hydrated gelatin. The gelatin/water bed is oriented such that at least substantially filtered combustion products are humidified by the water vapor as the filtered combustion products pass over the bed. Relative thereto, a method of improving the release and inflation of an airbag of a vehicle occupant protection system is also described. Humidification of at least substantially filtered combustion products results in a reduced pressure requirement to open and inflate a stored airbag in fluid communication with the gas generator.Type: GrantFiled: January 22, 2004Date of Patent: November 14, 2006Assignee: Automotive Systems Laboratories, Inc.Inventors: Takasi Furusawa, Paresh S. Patent number: 7083736Abstract: A system for extracting free oil from industrial processing fluids contains a solids retention cartridge having a plurality of vertically oriented polymeric elements therein. The cartridge fluidly communicates with a retention chamber, wherein the retention chamber provides a predetermined residence time based on fluid flow as established by inlet and outlet pressure and also as established by valved fluid exit orifices. An aggregation chamber fluidly communicates with the retention chamber and provides an area for aggregation of a low density fluid such as oil for example. The low density fluid is then decanted from a decant chamber. The purified bulk fluid is drained from the retention chamber through an associated return chamber. The average cross-sectional area of the aggregation chamber is less than the average cross-sectional area of the retention chamber thereby enhancing the aggregation of a lower density fluid such as oil, prior to decant.Type: GrantFiled: February 2, 2005Date of Patent: August 1, 2006Inventor: Gene Hirs

Patent number: 6997477Abstract: A dual stage inflator 10 utilizes a housing 12 having two laterally oriented propellant chambers 20 and 22. A perforated divider 18 provides lateral separation between chambers 20 and 22, and facilitates fluid communication between chambers 20 and 22 when both chambers are operated. Upon inflator 10 operation, the first chamber 20 is activated operatively independent of the second chamber 22, and if desired, the second chamber 22 may be activated simultaneously or sequentially with chamber 20. A perforated divider 18 provides lateral separation between chambers 20 and 22, and facilitates fluid communication between chambers 20 and 22 when both chambers are activated. The aforementioned design provides simplified manufacturing with equivalent or enhanced structural integrity relative to known inflators.Type: GrantFiled: April 21, 2003Date of Patent: February 14, 2006Assignee: Automotive Systems Laboratory, Inc.Inventor: Eduardo L.
