Abstract: A hot wax storage tank is supported by an arm extending vertically upward from a base. A heating element on the tank heats the wax to its vicious liquid state suitable for application on a client. A conduit connects an outlet in the bottom of the tank to the input of a control valve. The output of the control valve is directed to an application dish located beneath control valve outlet. By means of the control valve, an operator can dispense only what is required for each client.

Abstract: In a communication network, a transmitting station sends encrypted messages for selective decryption in any one of several receiving stations. To that end, the transmitting station stores a single set of several encryption keys, each of which is for encrypting messages to all of the receiving stations. Also, for each message that is sent for decryption in a particular receiving station, the transmitting station (a) automatically selects at random any encryption key from the single set, (b) receives, from an input terminal, a control word which is a series of bits that uniquely identifies the particular receiving station, (c) encrypts both the message and the control word with the randomly selected key, and (d) transmits the result of step (c) to all of the receiving stations.
Abstract: An assembly for cooling an array of IC packages which have respective non-coplanar heat dissipating surfaces, comprises: a frame that is attachable to the array and has multiple beams, each of which is positioned to overlie some of the IC packages; respective liquid-cooling jackets for the IC packages with each jacket having a heat absorbing face; each jacket being mounted via a post that is loosely fitted through a respective hole in one of the beams in proximity with a respective one of the IC packages; and each jacket mounting providing a flexible connection which allows the jacket's heat absorbing face to be placed at multiple angles and different heights, and thereby coincide with the non-coplanar heat dissipating surface of an IC package.
Abstract: A data processing system includes a plurality of data processing modules coupled to a bus and to a set of control lines. These modules request the use of the bus by sending respective sequences of at least two binary numbers during successive cycles on the control lines in synchronization with each other. On the control lines the numbers are logically ORed together. Each module terminates the sending of its numbers if, during any one of the successive cycles, the logical OR is greater than twice the number which the module itself is sending. A module uses the bus only if, during each of the successive cycles, the logical OR does not exceed the number which the module itself sends.
Abstract: A method of soldering component leads to I/O pads on a printed circuit board, without desoldering any other circuit components which were previously soldered to the board near the pads, includes the steps of: forming a mechanical assembly in which respective joints of the pads and the leads and respective solder mounds are mechanically held together; moving the assembly at a predetermined speed on a conveyor such that the joints, but not the previously soldered components, sequentially pass through a target area which is small relative to the total number of joints; and melting and then hardening the solder mounds, without desoldering the previously soldered components, by directing a focused stream of hot gas at the target area as the joints move therethrough on the conveyor.

Abstract: In a communication network, a transmitting station sends encrypted messages to several receiving stations. Each receiving station stores one and the same set of decryption keys; and it stores a control word which is a series of bits that is unique to that station. Also, each receiving station identifies an encrypted message as being sent to it by -- (a) automatically selecting a decryption key at random from the set, (b) performing a decrypt operation on the same portion of the encrypted message from the transmitting station using the selected key, (c) comparing the result of the decrypt operation to its stored control word, and (d) repeating steps (a) thru (c) until either a match occurs or all keys in the set have been selected.
Abstract: A module, for interconnecting integrated circuits, is comprised of a substrate, a layer of polyimide disposed thereon, and a plurality of spaced apart copper conductors on the layer of polyimide. This module is dipped into a solution of palladium chloride, thereafter it is dipped into a solution of sodium hydroxide, and thereafter it is dipped into an electroless plating solution for cobalt. As a result, a film of cobalt is deposited on all exposed surfaces of the copper conductors, but no cobalt is deposited on the exposed polyimide surface between the conductors. This cobalt film protects the copper conductors from corrosion, and it does not short the conductors together.
Abstract: A power supply system for segmented loads, and having phantom redundancy, is comprised of multiple sets of power supplies, with each set having an output terminal for furnishing load current at a certain voltage. A respective load is connected to the output terminal of each set, and each set also has a current-sharing circuit by which the load currents furnished from the supplies within a set are equalized. Further, all of the supplies from all the loads combined, minus any one supply, have a total current-furnishing capacity which meets the current requirements of all of the loads, but no set of supplies for any one load includes an extra or redundant supply. Also, switches are provided which selectively interconnect, and disconnect, the respecitve current-sharing circuits of the power supply sets such that the supplies of all connected sets furnish equalized load currents.
Abstract: A heat sink for adhesive attachment to an integrated circuit package has a base plate with gapped areas dividing the plate into sectors. A series of radial fin elements extend from the base plate except at the gapped areas where a bridging fin element spans the gap to effectively help reduce the stresses caused by heat cycling and permit the adhesive bond to be relatively undisturbed.
Abstract: In order to avoid the sloshing of liquid within a container caused by movement of the container, the single bulk volume of the liquid is retained in the form of a plurality of separated mini-volumes. This is accomplished by providing a chamber formed by upper and lower plates and an interconnecting sidewall. A plurality of elongated, adjacent mini-chambers are provided within the chamber aligned in side-by-side relationship with the sidewall. The mini-chambers are formed by a honeycomb medium of acoustical material having one end sealed closed. The medium has no measurable magnetic susceptability and is formed of a paper material treated with a heat resistant phenolic resin. When placed within an insulated housing including isothermal shields, the chamber is useful in cryogenic applications such as, for example, storing liquid helium.
Abstract: A two input nonsaturating bipolar logic gate consists of just two bipolar transistors plus a pair of resistors plus two voltage buses. One resistor has a resistance R.sub.C and it is connected from one of the voltage buses to the collector of both transistors. The second resistor has a resistance R.sub.E and it is connected from the other voltage bus to the emitter of both transistors. Those resistances R.sub.C and R.sub.E are selected such that R.sub.C /R.sub.E >1 and 0.1<(V.sub.CC -V.sub.BE)R.sub.C /R.sub.E <0.8 V.sub.BE where V.sub.BE is the base to emitter voltage at which each transistor turns on and V.sub.CC is the voltage between the two voltage buses.
Abstract: A peripheral controller (data link processor) controls data transfers between a host computer and a plurality of tape peripheral units and a single printer peripheral unit. A master microprocessor commands three subordinate controllers to permit concurrent data transfers through a buffer memory in both the Read and the Write directions. A dual channel control from the master microprocessor actuates a DMA switch so that data transfers to/from the tape units can be controlled by switching on alternate control lines which regulate the data transfer operations.
Abstract: The capability of the microbellows cooling technique to remove heat from multi-chip modules is enhanced with a highly conductive, rigid, heat spreader. The heat spreader has a planar surface urged against a planar surface of the chip by the flexible microbellows. The surface area of the heat spreader is greater than the mating surface area of the chip. The heat spreader is attached to the bottom surface of the microbellows. The surface area of the heat spreader which mates with the surface of the chip is highly polished and coated with a highly conductive soft metal. A jet of coolant is forced into the inner surface of the microbellows.
Abstract: An I/O controller functions to provide management of, control of, while functioning as two "virtual" data link processors for at least two separate types of peripheral terminal units, thus enabling data transfers between a host computer and any selected one of the peripheral terminal units. A commonly shared logic interface, common to both virtual controllers, is selected for use by a Request-Program Array Logic unit which arbitrates the utilization of the common logic by one of two virtual controllers at any given time. A first and second status latch is provided in the common front end interface of the I/O controller whereby each status latch provides status signals to the main host computer system of the state of any one of two virtual controllers which share common interface to a host computer.
Abstract: An integrated circuit chip having improved static discharge protection comprises a semiconductor substrate with a major surface, a plurality of transistors that are integrated into the surface, patterned conductors that interconnect the transistors and route input signals to the transistors, with the patterned conductors including metal pads for receiving the input signals from an external source; wherein the improvement comprises respective diodes which are integrated into the surface directly beneath the metal pads, and which connect the pads to the substrate and conduct electrostatic charge therebetween. With this structure, no additional chip space is required over that which is used by the transistors which are being protected since the diodes are hidden in the normally unused chip space beneath the pads.
Abstract: A data transfer network includes a group of disk drive peripheral units, each has dual ports for connection to two separate peripheral-controllers. A host computer can initiate either peripheral-controller to access selected disk drive units for Read/Write operations.
Abstract: Disclosed is a data processing system which is comprised of a plurality of devices that carry on conversations with each other over a time-shared bus. These conversions can consist of a message from a device A to a device B which is immediately followed by a message from device B back to device A, or a message from device A to device B which is immediately followed by a message from device B to another device C, or a single message from device A to device B. In each case, the last device to receive a message assumes control of the bus; and it relinquishes this control by either sending a message to another device or by broadcasting a poll code to all devices on the bus.
Abstract: A heat sink device assembly providing a radially finned heat sink with a tapered base is provided for application to surface-encumbered integrated circuit packages for heat dissipation purposes. The device involves a patterned set of radial fin elements, through which cooling air flow may pass, mounted on a baseplate. A taper or reduction in cross sectional area of the baseplate is provided in order to maximize the surface area for heat dissipation while constraining the area of attachment, thus avoiding physical or electrical contact with peripheral objects or areas placed on the surface edges of the integrated circuit package.
Abstract: A power supply system includes a plurality of dedicated power supplies, each of which has a separate output terminal for furnishing output current to just one respective load. Each dedicated power supply has a switch for turning the supply on and off independent of the remaining dedicated supplies. A single redundant power supply is also included which turns on when every dedicated supply is on. And, a control circuit is included which shares output current from the redundant supply, when it is on, with the loads of only a subset of the dedicated supplies, such that the total shared output current from the redundant supply and the respective output current from each dedicated supply in the subset are all substantially equal. This subset consists of any dedicated supply which fails, and those dedicated supplies whose output current to their load when the redundant supply is off exceeds the equalized current.
Abstract: A system and apparatus for encoding a set of input vector components by initiating a sequential search through a codebook memory to put out a series of associated error code vectors which can be compared in sequence over a period of time in order to select the minimum error code vector (best fit). A clocking-sequencing means enables an output latch to hold (after termination of the sequence period) the index number which represents the particular error code vector presently having the minimum distortion. Each new set of input vector components will be sequenced to search for the minimum error code vector (and index) for that particular set of input vector components.
