  • Patent number: 8297023
Abstract: An improved stackable square tubular column assembly and method of assembly for multi-floor steel-framed buildings in which hollow columns for vertically adjacent floors are joined by a coupler having beam connectors extending outwardly therefrom so that the coupler supports the floor load in shear. The core of the assembly is the coupler having a flat plate extending through horizontal slots in opposing walls of the coupler that divides the coupler into two compartments, each compartment telescopingly receiving the end of a single floor column so that the column load of the upper column is uniformly distributed in compression over the walls of the lower column through the plate.

  • Patent number: 6517404
Abstract: A tipless arc tube for a high intensity discharge lamp and method of manufacture wherein the arc tube may remain open to an uncontrolled atmosphere during the step of hermetically scaling the arc tube. The novel arc tube and method obviate the need to perform any process steps within a controlled atmosphere. The pressure of the fill gas sealed within the arc tube may be controlled by controlling the temperature of the fill gas during the step of hermetically sealing the arc tube. The novel arc tube and method obviate the need to use a pump to control the fill gas pressure.

  • Patent number: 4887744
Abstract: A dispenser for a carbonated beverage bottle that uses the pressure from gases released by the beverage to eject the beverage. A plunger is depressed to unseat a check-ball floating in the beverage in a pick-up tube inside the bottle, the check-ball having been seated by gaseous and/or buoyant pressure in a seal to prevent escape of the gas or beverage. The neck and spout of the plunger are hollow, forming a passageway for the beverage to an opening in the spout. Beverage enters the neck of the plunger through opening in the circumferential wall of the neck when the plunger is depressed. Ribs on the interior wall of the seal are in frictional contact with the neck to prevent escape of the gas and the beverage. A tear-away collar permits stacking of the bottles and provides tamper resistance.

  • Patent number: 4876741
Abstract: A compressed single side band communication system and method in which the audio signal is compressed prior to pre-emphasis and thereafter summed with a pilot tone for further compression prior to transmission. Initially, only the pilot tome is transmitted at full rated power to aid in acquisition of the signal by the receiver. Thereafter, the transmitter ALC is disabled and the pilot tone is attenuated. The receiver adjusts the frequency characteristics of the pilot tone filter and phase lock loop filter in the detector as a function of lock-up. The delay after loss of lock-on in reverting to wide band pilot tone and wideband loop filters is varied as a function of signal strength. The pilot tone may be frequency modulated for tone coded squelch, with the modulating source being located in the return end of the phase lock loop filter. A unique filter is provided to insure acquisition of the pilot tone.

  • Patent number: 4857803
Abstract: A method of producing electroluminescence without a chemical reaction by providing a metal oxide containing electron traps, (i.e., holes or distortion of the lattice of the oxide by impurities or surface states), providing free electrons at an energy level in the conduction band and trapping the electrons to release photons. Alternatively, electroluminescence may be produced without a chemical reaction by the decay of the energy level of electrons from an excited state which results from collision of accelerated free electrons with ions in the oxide, the free electrons being provided externally of the oxide (e.g., by an electron gun or the application of a high field to an insulator contiguous to the oxide) or by space charges within the oxide or adjacent to the boundary thereof. Electroluminescing lamps are also disclosed.
