  • Patent number: 5724711
Abstract: An apparatus for manufacturing multilayer steel wool filter pads includes a gantry which orbits heads about a central axis. The heads transfer portions of steel wool cut from a web onto a rotatable turntable to form a multilayer steel wool filter pad. Detection devices and a tool controller cooperate to synchronize the rotation of the turntable with the transfer of the steel wool portions to the turntable, so that each of the layers of the steel wool filter pad has its steel wool filaments oriented differently from those of the adjacent layer by an angle of approximately 90 degrees. A method for making rectangular steel wool filter pads involves advancing multiple steel wool webs through rollers, with each of the webs moving at the same rate, to form a combined web. The combined web is then cut into square portions with sides at least twice as long as the width of the rectangular steel wool filter pads. The portions are stacked so that the filaments of overlying layers are shifted 90 degrees from each other.

  • Patent number: 5726519
Abstract: Traveling-wave piezoelectric motor comprising at least one stator (1), two groups of piezoelectric elements consisting of ceramic rods (5) polarized independently of one another, arranged perpendicularly to the stator and excited by an alternating current with a phase shift of .pi./2 between the groups so as to generate a deformation in the form of a traveling wave on the surface of the stator (1), and at least one rotor (2, 3) in the form of a disk. The stator is in the form of a wheel consisting of a peripheral annulus over which the piezoelectric elements are distributed, of a central hub and of linking arms intended to transmit an axial pressure exerted on the hub to the annulus. It is thus possible to compress the rods with a much greater force than that applied to the rotor. This prestress has the effect of limiting the spread in the resonant frequencies.

  • Patent number: 5724099
Abstract: A process for controlling the output flow rate of a coder of digital data representative of sequences of images, the coding effected by the coder including a quantization stage of quantization parameter Q, the sequences of images being made up of successive groups of images. The process consists of determining, at the moment of the presence of the i group of images at the output of the coder, the quantization parameter Q(i+1) for the coding of the (i+1) group of images so that the flow rate at the output of the coder conforms with a version of a leaky bucket defined by a size M and by a leakage rate .lambda. in terms of the activity of the scene represented by the i group of images.

  • Patent number: 5723886
Abstract: The invention provides an n-channel MOS field effect transistor with an improved anti-radioactivity. Such transistor includes a p-type silicon substrate. An isolation oxide film is selectively formed on a surface of the p-type silicon substrate. Source and drain diffusion layers of n+-type are formed on first opposite sides of a channel region in the p-type silicon substrate. A gate made of polycrystalline silicon is formed over the channel region through a gate oxide film. Leak guard diffusion layers of p-type are formed on second opposite sides of the channel region in the p-type silicon substrate. The p-type leak guard diffusion layer has a junction surface to the isolation oxide film. The junction surface of the p-type leak guard diffusion layer and the isolation oxide film exists up to a level which is deeper than a depth of the n+-type source and drain diffusion layers.

  • Patent number: 5720599
Abstract: A cooler fan assembly having a shroud, a means to produce an air flow, a first heat exchanger, and a second heat exchanger. The shroud defines an air passageway. The air passageway directs an air flow produced by the air flow means in a path having a direction going into an inlet portal of the shroud and out of a discharge portal of the shroud. The first heat exchanger is coupled to the shroud and is in the path of the air flow. The second heat exchanger is coupled to the shroud and is in the path of the air flow. • Patent number: 5719301
Abstract: The invention provides a method of conjugating double bonded drying oil so that a relatively low cost linseed oil, for example, can replace the more expensive, naturally conjugated tung oil which has been used heretofore. The conjugation is brought about by the use of ruthenium as a catalyst, with formic or a similar acid providing a synergistic augmentation of the reaction. The conjugated oil may have many uses, but a major object is to provide a way to enhance a phenolic resin adhesive used on wood and wood products.

  • Patent number: 5718092
Abstract: A floor, wall, roof, of ceilng of a building is made of specially adapted beams and overlying panels. The beams have a layer of foam material on their edges. The foam material can include a resiliently compressible material, a thermally insulating material, or a material which possesses both of these properties. The panels are positioned over the beams so that the foam material is sandwiched between the beams and the panels. When the panels are fastened to the beams, the resiliently compressible foam material partially compresses, thereby filling any gaps which may form between the beams and the panels. The resiliently compressible foam material thus prevents relative movement between the panel and the beams which would otherwise produce squeaks. When the foam material includes thermal insulating material, it forms a thermal barrier between panels and beams, especially metal beams, thereby eliminating various drawbacks of construction using metal beams.
