  • Patent number: 4622952
Abstract: A process for the treatment of cancer by the application of external electromagnetic energy capable of achieving biophysical alterations in the intracellular structure of cancer cells in living tissue, including stimulation of intracellular production of interferon. The process accomplishes these biophysical alterations by tuning an external electromagnetic energy to the resonant energy absorption frequencies of the intracellular structure of the selected cells and then exposing the subject to this tuned electromagnetic energy field. Alternatively, the field can be tuned to the frequency which has been calculated to be closest to the resonant frequency of the cancer cells and furthest from the resonant frequency of the normal cells. The process may be further enhanced by the intracellular absorption of selected materials designed to alter the magnetic susceptibility and therefore the resonant energy absorption frequency of the intracellular structure.

  • Patent number: 4611774
Abstract: An assembly for mounting a propeller, which is driven by an aircraft engine, on a longitudinal member of a lightweight aircraft. The assembly includes a sleeve positioned about the longitudinal member, and a pair of opposed adjustable cups securing the sleeve at its ends longitudinally relative to the longitudinal member. A rotating mechanism mounted to the propeller, rotatable about the sleeve, and driven by the aircraft engine rotates the propeller concentrically about a longitudinal axis of the longitudinal member. Suitable bearings are disposed between the rotating mechanism and the sleeve and the rotating mechanism rotates on these bearings. Vibration dampening rings are placed between the cups and the sleeve and dampen the vibration transmitted between the rotating mechanism and the longitudinal member.

  • Patent number: 4611207
Abstract: A toroidal shaped metallic housing, mounted on and electrically connected with a high voltage transmission line, is adapted with a metal plate and an intervening dielectric sheet adhered to its exterior surface. The housing, tied to the transmission line voltage, and the metal plate constitute the electrodes of a first capacitor of a capacitive voltage divider, while the capacitive coupling of the metallic plate with the surrounding environment provides a second voltage divider capacitor. The voltage appearing on the plate is processed by circuitry within the housing to derive a signal indicative of the transmission line voltage.

  • Patent number: 4609019
Abstract: A log debarker of the hollow-head type having a rotor journaled in a stator for rotation about a longitudinal axis of the rotor. A plurality of debarking tools are attached to the rotor for debarking a log being moved axially through the rotating rotor. Three independently and hydraulically-powered infeed spiked rollers are positioned on the infeed end of the stator for feeding logs into the rotor and three independently and hydraulically-powered outfeed spiked rollers are positioned on the outfeed end. The rollers are powered at differing rotational speeds to accommodate logs of uneven surfaces. An air-operated tensioning system including a quick release valve adjusts the position of the infeed and the outfeed rollers urging them towards the longitudinal axis and automatically jogs the rollers open when they are unable to mount a log. A lubricating system having lubricant filtering and flow control capabilities lubricate and flushes the bearings for the rotating rotor.

  • Patent number: 4609020
Abstract: A log debarker having a frame, a stator supported by the frame, a rotor journaled in the stator for rotation about a longitudinal axis of the rotor, a rotating mechanism for rotating the rotor about the longitudinal axis, and a plurality of debarking tools attached to the rotor. An infeed mechanism positioned on the infeed end of the stator feeds logs axially into the rotor. The infeed mechanism includes a first feed roll, a second feed roll, and a third feed roll, all of which are disposed in a triangular relationship around the longitudinal axis. A first rigid link connects the first and second feed rolls, and a second rigid link connects the second and third feed rolls. An air-operated tensioning mechanism is provided having an air cylinder connected at one end to the second feed roll for adjusting the position of the infeed means relative to the longitudinal axis. The air cylinder when energized causes the first, second, and third feed rolls to move together relative to the longitudinal axis.

  • Patent number: 4599086
Abstract: A spinal stabilization device positionable between separated but neighboring vertebral bodies to stabilize a spinal column which has been rendered unstable by disease. The device includes a vertebral body prosthesis containing at least one pair of oppositely disposed anchoring pins which are advanced out of the prosthesis into the abutting vertebral bodies to secure the prosthesis to and between them. On its anterior side the prosthesis has an opening communicating with the pins inside the prosthesis. A wrench is inserted into the opening until it engages the pair of pins, and then the wrench is rotated to advance the pins into the abutting vertebral bodies. Detent pins bias the anchoring pins against the wrench and lock the anchoring pins in place when in their fully extended anchoring positions. Spacer members can be attached to the ends of the prosthesis thereby elongating it to accommodate separations between neighboring vertebral bodies of varying dimensions.

  • Patent number: 4596145
Abstract: An acoustic imaging system capable of producing C-mode images or orthoscopic projection images of a three-dimensional volume at significantly increased speeds of operation is described. For each acoustic pulse transmitted by a piezoelectric transducer array an electronic parallel processing system produces several unique image points whose locations in the image correspond to the Cartesian coordinates of the positions of receiving transducers. While range information is not directly displayed, range discrimination can be realized by means of an optional range dependent gain control or an optional color display in which range discrimination occurs through visual discrimination of differing hues.

  • Patent number: 4593558
Abstract: A method of optimizing the aerodynamic characteristics of a vehicle body comprising positioning a vehicle body provided with desired configurations and dispositions of interior compartments and components in a wind tunnel facility, depositing fluid entrainable particles on the vehicle body and operating the wind tunnel facility to direct a fluid stream onto the vehicle body laden with such entrainable particles whereby the particles are caused to be entrained by the fluid stream along laminar layers of fluid flow and remain deposited in various stagnant, barrier and wake zones, resulting in a reconfigured vehicle body having optimized aerodynamic characteristics. The particles can be deposited on the vehicle body and the fluid stream may then be directed onto the vehicle body or the particles may be injected into the fluid stream upstream of the vehicle body to be entrained and carried by the fluid stream and deposited on the vehicle body in the stagnation, barrier and wake zones.
