Abstract: A current collecting means in an aerial cableway system collecting electric power for driving a self-propelled aerial carriage, is capable of maximization of the lifetime of a current collecting shoe. The current collecting means comprises a current-carrying cable having at least a planar surface on the outer surrounding thereof and a current collecting shoe having a planar contacting surface to be urged onto the planar surface of the cable. The contact between the shoe and cable is carried out in both planar surfaces to prevent uneven wear of the shoe.
Abstract: In a halftone printing system, halftone positive prints are made directly from gray scale photographic negatives by an enlarger apparatus which shines a beam of light through the negative and focuses an image of the negative on a sheet of high contrast photographic printing paper through a halftone screen. A secondary light source is provided to irradiate the printing paper to provide satisfactory halftone representation of the gray scale. The positive halftone prints are assembled with cold type from which a negative is made. From the negative, a printing plate is then made.

Abstract: Allergy testing apparatus for conveniently and quickly testing a subject's reactions to a plurality of allergens. The apparatus includes needle blocks, cover apparatuses including a layer of closed-cell foam having a smooth skin, and apparatus for removably holding a plurality of allergen containing vials for cooperation with the needle blocks and the cover apparatuses. In use, closure of the vials may be effected by the cover apparatus of the needle block, and the respective allergen containing vials are maintained in an uncontaminated condition.

Abstract: Sludge is composted by arranging the sludge in a pile over a conduit and air is forced into the pile in spaced time intervals and air is drawn from the pile into the conduit in alternate time intervals.The perforated conduits are adapted to be placed under and extend the length of two windrow compost piles. A reversible blower is connected to blow air to and withdraw air from each of the conduits. The blower is timed and controlled to blow air from a first pile through the conduits and into a second pile in spaced time intervals and in alternate time intervals to withdraw air from the second pile through the conduits and into the first pile.

Abstract: A method is disclosed for recovering and reclaiming heat from a source of relatively hot gases, which are preferably substantially vapor-saturated, by directly contacting the gases with a relatively cooler spray of liquid, such as water, in a heat exchange zone. The relatively warm liquid resulting from the contact of the sprayed cooler liquid with the vapor-saturated gases are collected in a receiver zone in the heat exchanger. This relatively warm liquid is then available for use. The hot gases which entered the heat exchanger will exit at a cooler temperature. They may be released to the atmosphere or returned to a process or room. The method is particularly suited for recovering heat from steam system condensate vents, dye fixation steamer exhausts, boiler exhaust stacks, and dry can enclosures such as those used in the textile and paper industry.
Abstract: An improved optical system is disclosed for rapid, accurate spectral analysis of the reflectivity or transmissivity of samples. A concave holographic diffraction grating oscillated at high speed is utilized to provide a rapid scanning of monochromatic light through a spectrum of wavelengths. The grating is positively driven at very high speed by a unique cam drive structure comprising identically shaped conjugate cams. The rapid scan by the grating enables the reduction of noise error by averaging over a large number of cycles. It also reduces the measurement time and thus prevents sample heating by excessive exposure to light energy. A filter wheel having dark segments for drift correction is rotated in the optical path and is synchronous with the grating. Source optics is employed to optimally shape the light source for particular applications.
Abstract: A roof finisher is mounted over the roof panel and the side pillars of a vehicle. The front edge of the part of the finisher mounted over a side pillar is secured to the side pillar by a mounting structure, comprising a first fitting member fixed on the front of the side pillar adjacent to the window glass and angling outwards and forwards, a second fitting member fixed to the front edge and angling backwards and inwards, and means for fixing these two fitting members together.
Abstract: An ignition timing control system for an internal combustion engine comprises first circuitry for producing a function of the intensity of combustion knock in each cylinder in a sequence, second circuitry for storing the function of each cylinder respectively in a memory circuit each of which corresponds to a specific cylinder, and third circuitry for determining the ignition timing of each cylinder by modifying the basic ignition timing determined by an advance mechanism, in accordance with the respectively stored functions.

Abstract: A method and structure for joining a harder to a softer sheet are disclosed. Sharp projections are formed surrounding a hole on the harder sheet, and these projections are penetrated through the softer sheet and then bent back and around so as to engage with the softer sheet. In a preferred embodiment, the projections are formed by boring a conical hole in the harder sheet, cutting radial slots which lead outwards from the hole, and bending the periphery of the hole perpendicular to the sheet. The acute angle formed by the conical surface of the hole and one face of the sheet ensures that the projections are sharp.
Abstract: Disclosed is a foldable desk or table comprising a support frame having pivotal support portions in the upper portions of the riser portion thereof, a single rectangular top plate of a length greater than the height of the pivotal support portions from a floor surface and swingably supported on the pivotal support portions to have a pivotal line across the width and at a position closer to the base end thereof, the pivotal line defining a swinging length of the top plate slightly shorter than the height of the pivotal support portions, and a leg swingably connected to the underside of the top plate at the outer free end thereof, the leg member being folded onto the underside of said top plate when the outer free end of the top plate is rotated about the pivotal line into a vertical folded position. Also disclosed is a foldable desk usable as a bed desk by providing an auxiliary leg in addition to the main leg.

Abstract: A ski edging device for a snowmobile includes an articulable joint connected between the snowmobile body and the skis to permit rotation of the skis relative to the body about a steering axis and to permit rotation of the skis relative to the body about a camber axis to control the angle of the inclination of the skis during turning maneuvers to prevent lateral side slipping of the snowmobile. A first control arm is secured to a portion of the articulable joint to move with rotation of the skis about the steering axis and a second control arm is secured to a second portion of the articulable joint to move with rotation of the skis about the camber axis. A cable and pulley system is connected between the first and second control arms such that a turning movement of the skis about the steering axis causes the first control arm to vary the position of the second control arm to rotate the skis about the camber axis to provide the desired edging effect.
Abstract: There is provided a proportioning device for connection to a main line carrying a pressurized fluid, for the purpose of introducing into or drawing from the main line a fluid at a rate standing in a substantially constant proportion to the flow rate of the main line. The device comprises a housing, at least one opening of which is connected to the main line and another opening of which is connected to the proportioning branch line. The device comprises a valve arranged in the housing and capable of closing the passage of the fluid into and from the proportioning branch line.
Abstract: An exhaust gas purifying system for an internal combustion engine including at least one combustion chamber connected to an intake port through an intake valve. The system comprises a first passage for passing a portion of exhaust gases discharged from the combustion chamber, a second passage for passing air, a fluid passage, at least one fluid injection nozzle having its one end connected to the fluid passage and the other end extending into the intake port toward the combustion chamber, the fluid injection nozzle adapted to open when the intake valve opens, and means responsive to engine operating condition for connecting the fluid passage to the first passage to permit injection of exhaust gases through the fluid injection nozzle into the combustion chamber during acceleration and for connecting the fluid passage to the second passage to permit injection of air through the fluid injection nozzle into the combustion chamber during normal operation or idling.

Abstract: In an internal combustion engine having an exhaust recirculation system including a combination of a vacuum-operated recirculation rate control valve and a solenoid-operated vacuum compensating valve, the vacuum compensating valve is controlled by pulse signals delivered from a microcomputer responsive to predetermined operational parameters, such as the revolution speed of the engine and the load on the engine, for modifying the pulse signals depending upon, for example, the accelerating and non-accelerating conditions of the engine.
Abstract: The probe comprises two inductance windings mounted in opposition and conted to an a.c. generator, a measurement winding placed at right angles between the two inductance windings and a measurement voltage detector. A compensation winding is placed coaxially and symmetrically with the measurement winding in relation to the axis of the inductance windings, thus permitting enhanced sensitivity of the probe and a directional effect. Potential applications include continuous recording of magnetic susceptibility along a vertical borehole wall and ore sorting on a conveyor belt.

Abstract: A logarithmic amplifier comprising a common-emitter type transistor amplifier circuit with an emitter resistor and a collector load. A bias voltage is applied to the base of the transistor through a diode so that the overall input-output transfer characteristic of the amplifier exhibits a logarithmic characteristic for a relatively wide range of input signals. A cascade connection of several of the basic amplifier circuits enlarges the dynamic range over which a logarithmic transfer characteristic is achieved.
