  • Patent number: 8348558
Abstract: The invention relates to a cutting insert having an essentially parallelepiped-shaped basic body with two larger spaced-apart longitudinal surfaces (10,11) which are connected to one another by two smaller transverse surfaces (12, 13) and two smaller longitudinal surfaces (14) designed as rake faces, wherein the smaller longitudinal surfaces (14) form with the adjacent surfaces a respective, encircling, closed cutting line which forms the cutting edges and rounded-off cutting corners, and the larger longitudinal surface (10, 11) merges on both sides via respective rounded-off edges into the smaller transverse surface (12, 13), and one of the rounded-off cutting corners is designed so as to project relative to a basic shape which is determined by the cutting lines, on both sides, of the larger longitudinal surfaces (10, 11) with the smaller longitudinal surfaces (14).

  • Patent number: 8328471
Abstract: A metalcutting insert that is useful in chipforming and material removal from a workpiece The metalcutting insert includes a metalcutting insert body, which includes a cutting edge having at least one discrete cutting location. The metalcutting insert body further contains a distinct interior coolant passage communicating with the discrete cutting location. The distinct interior coolant passage has a coolant passage inlet defining a coolant passage inlet cross-sectional area, a coolant passage discharge defining a coolant passage discharge cross-sectional area, and an axial coolant passage length. The distinct interior coolant passage defines a coolant flow cross-sectional area along the axial coolant passage length thereof. The coolant passage inlet cross-sectional area is substantially the same as the coolant passage discharge cross-sectional area. The geometry of the coolant flow area changes along the axial coolant passage length.

  • Patent number: 8317435
Abstract: The invention relates to a cutting insert for clamping into a disc-type or strip-shaped tool body, in particular, for milling crankshafts, whereby the insert is substantially cuboid-shaped and has two front faces, two side faces, serving as cutting faces as well as an upper and a lower side face, whereby a convex face is arranged between the front faces and the upper and lower side faces, so that the upper and lower side faces and the convex face form cutting edges each with a side face. According to invention, the cutting insert has an inwardly-tapered face adjoining the convex face, which allows the cutting edge to protrude and tapered chamfers are provided between the inwardly-tapered faces of the front face on both sides of a planar supporting surface to the outer edge.

  • Patent number: 8277153
Abstract: A combination of a cutting insert and a shim. The cutting insert and shim have two opposing end surfaces with two identical opposing major side surfaces and two identical opposing minor side surfaces extending between the minor side surfaces. Each end surface of the insert has two lowered abutment members, each having a shim abutment surface for contacting the shim. One end surface of the shim has two raised abutment members, each having an insert abutment surface for contacting the insert. The abutment surfaces contact each other in an area where high cutting forces occur so as to help distribute the loads encountered in the cutting operation, as well as provide protection of the insert pocket in case of insert failure.

  • Patent number: 8257003
Abstract: A side actuated collet lock mechanism includes a collet; a drawbar at least partially disposed within the collet, and a pair of wedge members threadingly received onto each end of a double-ended drive screw. The drive screw is rotated to cause the wedge members to move downward such that a first cam surface engages the drawbar. The drawbar and collet are pulled into the tool holder and firmly secure the shank. To remove the shank, the drive screw is rotated in an opposite direction to cause the wedge members to move upward such that a second cam surface engages the drawbar. The drawbar and the collet are pushed out from the toolholder, thereby releasing the shank.

  • Patent number: 8234958
Abstract: A toolholder with a controllable critical angle, such as a lead, trailing, rake or clearance angles, includes a tool spindle for retaining the toolholder in a tool rest of a machine tool. The machine tool includes at least one linear axis, for example, three mutually perpendicular axes, a rotary axis and a rotation axis. The rotary axis and/or rotation axis is controllable to move to a specified position in synchronization with a movement of one of the linear axes. An adaptor supports a cutting tool that is retained in the adaptor by a clamp. The cutting tool defines a critical angle, such as a lead angle, a trailing angle, a rake angle and a flank clearance angle, wherein the critical angle is corrected as a vector of movement of at least one of the linear axis is changed. In addition, the cutting tool can be positioned on opposite side of a centerline of rotation of the workpiece to effectively double the life of the cutting tool. A method of controlling a toolholder is also disclosed.

  • Patent number: 8220804
Abstract: An apparatus for releasably holding a tubular toolholder shank by axially reciprocating a lock rod between a locked and unlocked position. Compression balls following a helical path on a torque nut are used to retract a compression sleeve, which in turn compresses springs against the lock rod to move the lock rod into the locked position. As a result, a repeatable lock rod force is possible with a pre-determined and self limiting rotation of the torque nut. The same helical groove may be used to advance the compression sleeve against the lock rod to urge the toolholder from the base member.
