  • Patent number: 5015364
Abstract: A process is disclosed for operating a refinery gas plant such as the unsaturated gas plant of a catalytic hydrocarbon conversion process that results in a reduction of the corrosive effect of acid gases on the gas plant vessels and equipment. The process comprises contacting acidic hydrocarbon feedstreams to an unsaturated gas plant separator zone with lean acid gas absorbing absorbent in an absorbtion zone comprising at least one liquid absorber bed and one vapor absorber bed. The liquid and vapor absorber beds are located upstream of the separator zone. The feedstreams to the gas plant comprise unstabilized, or wild, liquid gasoline and liquid and vapor output streams from the liquid-vapor separator for inter-stage wet gas compressor of the conversion process main fractionator. Accordingly, these feedstreams are deacidified before separation in the USGP deethanizer-absorber, sponge absorber, and debutanizer. This also eliminates the need for deacidification of the gas plant product stream.

  • Patent number: 4997544
Abstract: This invention provides a fixed bed of nonuniformly sized grade catalyst particles for hydrocracking or hydrodesulfurization. The graded particles are arranged with the largest particles in either the upstream or the downstream portion of the bed. In either case, when compared with the conventional bed of uniformly sized particles, the graded bed of this invention shows enhanced hydrocarbon conversion activity for heavy oils over a useful range of conversion. Such catalyst bed is particularly useful in moderate hydrocracking operating at less than 1000 psig (7000 kPa) pressure.

  • Patent number: 4997543
Abstract: The benzene concentration in the gasoline pool of a petroleum refinery is decreased by alkylation of the benzene in a catalytic dewaxing reactor using the olefinic by-products from the dewaxing reaction as alkylating agents. The catalytic dewaxing is preferably carried out in the presence of an intermediate pore size zeolite such as ZSM-5 using a distillate or lube boiling range dewaxing feed. The benzene rich feed preferably contains less than about 2% C.sub.7+ aromatics in order to reduce alkylation of non-objectionable species in the reformate.

  • Patent number: 4994168
Abstract: The quality and yield of dewaxed, hydrotreated lube oil base stocks are improved by reducing the top temperature in the hydrotreated lube stripper so as to increase the proportion of heavy kerosene components in the lube oil base stock. The separation system provides for a two stage stripping of the lube oil fraction such that the kerosene fraction stripped from the lube product in the primary product stripper under vacuum is stripped in a second stage stripper at a higher pressure with recycle of the heavy kerosene fraction as a reflux stream to the primary vacuum stripper so that a product with improved viscosity index and flash point is separated in the primary stripper.

  • Patent number: 4990713
Abstract: High viscosity index, low pour point lubricants are produced by reacting an iso-paraffinic component, preferably with significant mono- and di-methyl chain branching, with an olefinic reactant in the presence of a free radical generator such as an organic peroxide, preferably ditertiary butyl peroxide. The isoparaffinic reactant is preferably obtained by the isomerization of a waxy feed such as slack wax over a zeolite beta isomerization catalyst, preferably Pt/zeolite beta. The olefinic reactant is preferably a distillate fraction produced by the oligomerization of low molecular weight olefins e.g., C.sub.3 to C.sub.5 olefins, produced by oligomerization over an intermediate pore size zeolite oligomerization catalyst such as ZSM-5.

  • Patent number: 4980333
Abstract: Perovskite related materials of high thermal stability and surface area which contain interspathic polymeric chalcogenides such as polymeric silica are prepared by ion exchanging a layered metal oxide, such as layered titanium oxide, with organic cation, to spread the layers apart. A compound such as tetraethylorthosilicate, capable of forming a polymeric oxide, is thereafter introduced between the layers. The resulting product is treated to form polymeric oxide, e.g. by hydrolysis, to produce the layered oxide material. The resulting product may be employed as catalyst material in the conversion of organic compounds.

  • Patent number: 4952543
Abstract: A process for dispersing or dispersing relatively large crystallites of an agglomerated Group VIII noble metal species present on a porous inorganic support is disclosed. The process includes contacting the agglomerated noble metal species, e.g., palladium or platinum, present on the support, e.g., alumina, silica or a zeolite such as ZSM-5 from which at least a major portion of any extraneous matter such as coke or other residue has previously been removed, with nitric oxide (NO) alone or in admixture with a source of halogen such as Cl.sub.2 and thereafter removing sorbed nitrogen oxide(s) and halogen, if present. The thus treated metal-loaded catalyst demonstrates substantially increased benzene hydrogenation activity (BHA) compared to the same catalyst prior to treatment indicating significant dispersion/redispersion of the metal crystallites as smaller crystallites.
