  • Patent number: 4738669
Abstract: A fluid dispenser having a handle portion supporting at least three spaced-apart, flexible prongs or tines that meet at a pyramidal apex to form a fluid-containing cradle. The cradle holds a precise amount of fluid therein by surface tension between the prongs and the fluid. The small cradle pocket formed at the apex of these prongs has a capillary channel disposed ahead of it, which terminates at the tip of the prongs. When the tip of the prongs are contacted to a body surface in question and slightly flexed, fluid will flow from the cradle through the capillary channel to this surface.

  • Patent number: 4656205
Abstract: Beads comprising a polymeric matrix containing a releasable lipophilic compound are made by precipitating the compound from solution within the matrix. Beads may be made by forming a homogeneous blend of the compound in lipophilic polymerizable material and subjecting the blend to bead polymerization while the blend is dispersed as beads in an aqueous medium containing hydrophilic polymerization stabilizer. The lipophilic compound may be a behenyl ester wax inhibitor or other reagent useful downhole or for other purposes and preferably has a relatively high melting point. The polymerizable material preferably dissolves the lipophilic compound and may include acrylic acid, methacrylic acid or other hydrophilic polymerizable material.

  • Patent number: 4643179
Abstract: Skin covering materials especially for wounds comprise dextran C insolubilized by reaction with epichlorohydrin in combination with a suitable humectant. The compositions may be in the form of coherent, self-supporting sheets of the insolubilized dextran C impregnated with humectant material, or in the form of pastes applied to the wound as such. The humectant material is preferably glycerin or isopropanolpropylene glycol and an oil. The wound covering material allows sufficient removal of exuded body fluid and seals the wound site against bacterial infection, whilst at the same time maintaining the wound moist to prevent scale formation. Medicaments may additionally be incorporated into the wound covering material, to assist in healing and further to safeguard against bacterial infection.

  • Patent number: 4640489
Abstract: A plastic mold assembly comprising a male and female section for casting soft contact lenses from a polymerizable feed material wherein compensation for polymerization shrinkage is attained and disengagement of the male and female mold sections is facilitated by providing one flexible and one rigid mold section. Good optical properties of the mold surfaces are obtained by forming the mold sections entirely from a thermoplastic material such as polystyrene that will not crystallize when cooled from a melt. In one embodiment a plurality of flexible male sections having convex molding surfaces and a plurality of rigid female sections having concave molding surfaces are supported on frames to attain an increased production rate of finished soft contact lenses.

Abstract: The invention relates to a process for the preparation of a reducing gas having a high reduction potential by catalytic conversion in two steps of a sulphur-free gas mixture of hydrocarbons having a high content of hydrocarbons with two or more carbon atoms. In the first step an inlet stream of at least a part of the gas mixture together with added steam is passed through an adiabatic reactor containing a steam reforming catalyst at an inlet temperature of 440.degree.-510.degree. C. and an outlet temperature of 400.degree.-500.degree. C. and at a pressure of 1-30 kg/cm.sup.2 g the amount of steam added being calculated for obtaining in the inlet stream an H/C ratio of at least 4.8 and an O/C ratio of between 0.5 and 1. The outlet stream from the first step is combined with the top-gas from a reduction furnace, and the combined stream is then further converted in the second step by steam reforming into a reducing gas.

  • Patent number: 4599403
Abstract: An improved method for the recovery of stevioside from Stevia rebaudiana Bertoni plants is provided which does not require the use of dangerous chemicals or special separation equipment such as ion exchange or chromatography. In the process the raw material, preferably in comminuted form is first extracted with water, the resulting aqueous extract is treated with a di- or tricarboxylic acid chelating agent to remove metallic and other impurities as well as to lower the pH to less than about 4. Subsequently a calcium-containing agent is added to precipitate out other impurities. The aqueous extract is essentially neutralized with an acid and is then subject to extraction with a water-immiscible solvent. Purified stevioside crystals are recovered by cooling the water layer obtained from said solvent extraction step.
