  • Patent number: 4491071
Abstract: An arrangement for securing impression as well as skew adjustment of one cylinder relative to another in a printing press. One of the cylinders has a bearing assembly occupying a cylindrical opening in the press frame. The bearing assembly includes a cylinder bearing having parallel planar support surfaces on opposite sides. An annular eccentric guide bearing has a cylindrical outer surface which is fitted into the cylindrical opening in the frame. The guide bearing is provided with opposed parallel way surfaces perpendicular to the plane containing the axes of the cylinders for slidably receiving and supporting the cylinder bearing. A first adjustment is provided for rockably positioning the guide bearing.

  • Patent number: 4491732
Abstract: In a modular solid state detector of the type including a scintillator and diodes for converting x-ray flux to a measurable electrical signal, the diodes are mounted out of the path of incident x-radiation to minimize noise and to limit degradation. The resulting configuration reduces efficiency because the active diode area is limited and the length of the light path between the scintillator and diode is increased. In order to compensate for that reduction in efficiency, optical potting material is used to join the scintillator to the diodes in order to minimize light attenuation between those elements. In addition, the outer surface of the cured optical potting material is coated with a thin specular layer of silver to keep the light within the optical potting material and thus most efficiently reflected from the scintillator to the diode.

  • Patent number: 4491833
Abstract: A device for indicating electrically measurable positions or adjustments of individual units required for the printing process, and displaying the positions or adjustments in the form of lines, segments or areas on a large-area indicating instrument. The actual values of the respective positions or adjustments of different units are freely selectable and can be represented on the indicating instrument pictorally and/or symbolically. A cathode-ray tube, LED-matrix or LCD-matrix, for example, can be used as indicating instruments.

  • Patent number: 4490050
Abstract: A master/slave clock system including a slave clock configured for inexpensive and reliable control from the master. Each slave clock has an unregulated d-c supply adapted to be supplied with a-c power from the master clock. Threshold switching means in each slave clock is coupled across the d-c supply to sense an abnormally low d-c voltage level intentionally created by lowering the a-c supply level from the master. The threshold switching means switches the clock from the normal operating mode to the set mode where time is incremented at a predetermined rate for a duration controlled by the master clock in order to controllably set all slave clocks in the system to the correct time of day. The system conveniently allows all slaves to be reset to the same time when time is reset at the master, provides for automatic recovery after power failures, and provides a convenient means for automatically resynchronizing all slave clocks twice a day.

  • Patent number: 4489567
Abstract: An ice cube making machine having a vertical, open-faced freezing mold over which water is circulated from an underlying trough to build up ice. When the mold is full, the pump circulating the water is stopped and the ice is harvested. Harvesting is facilitated by a plunger that is biased to push ice from the mold. Water pressure from the pump holds the plunger against its bias until the pressure is released for the harvest cycle. The mold open face is covered by a water curtain having a lower lip underlying the mold open face so that the underlying trough need not extend substantially out from the mold, thereby permitting similar such units to be vertically stacked.

  • Patent number: 4489573
Abstract: In a circular knitting machine problems may arise from differential thermal expansion, particularly in a radial direction, or rotatable carrier disc (22) and a coaxial bearing body (16) in which it runs by means of a bearing (36). In order to overcome this by absorption of the differential expansion, one of the running surfaces of the bearing is formed on or supported by a resiliently yieldable part (34), which preferably also preloads the bearing. As alternatives to the illustrated embodiment, in which the yielding is axial, as indicated by the arrow A, the yielding may be radial, and also the yieldable part may be on the bearing body (16) rather than the carrier disc (22).

  • Patent number: 4490726
Abstract: A parabolic, collapsible rooftop microwave antenna for direct satellite-to-consumer TV transmission pivots in the direction of the aperture axis about a horizontal pivot axis in response to excessive wind forces. The antenna has a cross-head theodolite-type mount adjustable for azimuth and elevation, with a horizontal pivot that provides axial displacement if the axial wind force exceeds a predetermined threshold force. This limits the torque transmitted to the roof on which the antenna is mounted to a reasonably low level. Various torque sensitive horizontal pivots are described including a torqued pivot bolt, torqued slide bolts disposed in arcuate slots for limit-stop action, shear pins for quick release action, and biased springs for collapse and self-restoration to the initial vertical position in response to transient wind force exceeding a threshold force set by the spring bias.

  • Patent number: 4489653
Abstract: A clamping device for thin flexible printing plates has a tensioning rail at the trailing wall of a wide longitudinal groove in the plate cylinder. The tensioning unit is mounted for axial and peripheral adjustment on a support of "L" cross-section having a first leg seated with respect to the bottom of the groove and a second leg presenting an upstanding reference surface interposed between the tensioning rail and the trailing wall of the groove. A set of tensioning springs recessed in the tensioning rail bear against the reference surface and apply peripheral tension to the plate. A spring detent latches the tensioning rail temporarily against the reference surface, overcoming the tensioning springs while the trailing edge of the plate is being gripped. The spring detent is mounted upon and movable with the support. Screws having a plurality of selectable holes anchor the support in a series of peripheral positions for accommodation of plates of different length.

  • Patent number: 4489014
Abstract: In a prior-art variable venturi carburetor in which the cross-sectional area of venturi is automatically varied according to the amount of intake air to keep the flow rate of intake air or the vacuum generated at the venturi at a constant level, since the cross section of venturi changes rectangularly, fuel is concentratedly jetted only near the middle portion of the venturi, so that fuel is not uniformly mixed with air passing through the venturi. To overcome these drawbacks, a wall having a reverse trapezoidal recess is provided near the nozzle and further a pair of triangular slots or cutouts are formed near the lower end surface of the suction piston obliquely and symmetrically so as to slidably engage with the wall, with the result that the cross section of the venturi changes trapezoidally and therefore a stable mixture is obtained even when the engine is running at a low speed or being idled.

  • Patent number: 4488848
Abstract: A load handling apparatus particularly suited for incorporation into a vehicle for lifting and transporting heavy loads such as steel billets, comprising a main frame to straddle a load, pivotally mounted lift frame assembly providing the lifting capability to raise a steel billet and suspend it during transport, suspended load engaging and clamping members, hydraulic cylinders to actuate the clamping and lifting members and an hydraulically actuated drag link for stabilizing the load while transporting over uneven terrain. The drag link is pivotally connected at its one end to the main frame and at its other end to the suspended load engaging and clamping assembly so that these pivot points, in conjunction with the pivot points of the lift frame assembly, substantially define a parallelogram relationship. By varying the length of the drag link, the clamping assembly is maintained in proper orientation relative to the ground.

  • Patent number: 4489327
Abstract: A direction finding system has two antennas with response patterns at 90.degree.. A sense antenna 14 is mounted to produce a sense output dependent on the received radio signal but independent of its bearing. A commutating and combining arrangement receives the antenna outputs and produces a sequence of control signals each of which represents a respective one of the following: the North-South output, the East-West output, the sum of the NS and EW outputs, the difference between the NS and EW outputs, the sum of the NS and sense outputs, and the sum of the EW and sense outputs. A receiver produces an output having a magnitude dependent on any amplitude modulation on the received radio signal but independent of its bearing.
