  • Patent number: 6021102
Abstract: The present invention provides a disc drive apparatus which identifies a type of a disc mounted on the apparatus by using reflected beam data obtained from a laser beam focused on the disc surface and other reflected beam data obtained from the laser beam being focused on the disc signal plane. For example, while forcibly changing the laser beam focusing point within a variable range at a predetermined velocity, a luminous energy signal or a focus error signal is used to count a time difference between a timing of focusing on the disc surface and a timing of focusing on the disc signal plane. According to the time difference obtained, the disc mounted is identified as a first type of disc or a second type of disc.

  • Patent number: 6018413
Abstract: A laser light source unit generates second higher-harmonic waves or sum-frequency waves by using an external resonator. The light source unit has a wavelength converter which incorporates an external resonator. A modulator spatially modulates the output light from the converter, thereby removing speckle noise. An optical waveguide propagates the laser light from the modulator to a given optical apparatus. The wavelength converter, the modulator, and the optical waveguide are mechanically separated. Moreover, vibration isolating members are provided to inhibit vibrations. Thus, any change in the length of the resonator or the optical axis caused by external vibrations is prevented. Further, a speckle pattern generated in propagating through an optical fiber is eliminated.

  • Patent number: 6018507
Abstract: An optical recording method according to the invention is provided such, that when an optical pickup (2) is moved over an optical disk (1), the optical pickup (2) being positioned onto the target track location, record marks are recorded on the optical disk (1) by a light beam irradiated onto the optical disk (1) through the optical pickup (2). An irradiation position of the light beam is offset during recording by a predetermined amount to a track at the recording direction side relative to the target track location, and a record mark is formed on a target track by the offset light beam.

  • Patent number: 6018428
Abstract: The invention provides a method for effectively removing the cause of a thermal asperity (TA) phenomenon occurring at an MR head incorporated in a disk storage system. If a read error occurs in data read by the MR head, a CPU executes a usual read retry operation. If the read error is not removed by the usual read retry operation, the CPU presumes that the read error is caused by the thermal asperity phenomenon occurring at the MR head. Then, the CPU controls the MR head to move to a CSS zone on the disk, thereby executing a TA removal operation so as to remove a fine particle such as dust attached to the MR head. In the TA removal operation, the rotational speed of the disk is reduced so that the MR head can be brought into contact with the disk in the CSS zone.

  • Patent number: 6016270
Abstract: A flash memory architecture relies on a single, time-shared address bus to enable a read operation to be performed simultaneously with an algorithm operation when the read operation is targeted for a memory cell block that is not currently tagged for an algorithm operation. After a read address has been latched into the array block selected for the read operation, the address bus is "free" for the remainder of the read operation cycle. During this free time, the address bus can be used for algorithm operations to load the counter address into an active tagged block in the array. Separate global data I/O lines are provided to facilitate simultaneous read and algorithm operations.

  • Patent number: 6012335
Abstract: A method of making a pressure sensor or acoustic transducer having high sensitivity and reduced size. A thin sensing diaphragm is produced by growing a single crystal, highly doped silicon layer on a substrate using a chemical vapor deposition process. The diaphragm is incorporated into a pressure sensor or acoustic transducer which detects pressure variations by a change in the capacitance of a capacitor which includes the diaphragm as a movable member. The thin diaphragm produces a highly sensitive device which can be fabricated in a smaller size than sensors or transducers having thicker diaphragms.

  • Patent number: 6014417
Abstract: A method and circuitry are provided for generating a phase shift in the recovered clock in a high speed, digital data recovery phase locked loop. Since phase step injection can be done in a closed loop environment, the dynamic of the real time phase step response of the PLL can be analyzed using a phase meter. In an open-loop environment, the output of the phase meter with a step response of 60 degree phase shift tracks closely with the internal RC response at the multi-phase outputs of the PLL's phase-to-frequency converter. Since the register and capacitor values vary with process, the scheme for verifying the relative accuracy of the PLL's internal filters can be verified without actually probing the device.

  • Patent number: 6014206
Abstract: The present invention is an apparatus and method for stabilization of laser output beam characteristics by automatically adjusting the angular and the lateral positions of the output beam. A component of the output beam is detected at a far field location and also at a near field location along an optical path of the component. Both the angular and the lateral positions of the output beam are determined, as well as characteristics of the output beam, after the component is detected at both the near and the far field locations. Both the angular position and the lateral position of the output beam are automatically adjusted to optimize the output beam. The adjustment of both the angular position and the lateral position are made possible by using a beam steering device preferably including two mirrors.

  • Patent number: 6010951
Abstract: A method is provided involving re-slicing a wafer after dual-side alignment and processing has been performed. This procedure provides twice as many processed electronic devices without increasing the number of loading, processing and unloading procedures performed or the total number of substrates used. Another method is provided for creating two processed chips by attaching two conventional substrates, processing IC's on each of the two exposed, polished sides and then detaching the substrates. This technique reduces the number of loading, processing and unloading procedures required to produce a given number of IC chips by half. An apparatus and further method provides two different subsystems of a single IC processed on opposite sides of the same chip. Such a device saves cost by using fewer substrates to make the same number of chips. Also, the method performs loading, processing and unloading procedures half as much to produce a given number of IC's.

  • Patent number: 6011897
Abstract: At a storage section, picture information of intermediate resolution and picture information of low resolution are formed on the basis of picture information of high resolution which has been read out from a frame memory. These picture information are caused to undergo fixed length encoding at a compression/expansion circuit. These picture data of three kinds of resolutions which have been caused to undergo fixed length encoding are respectively recorded in the order of reproduction and continuously onto an optical disk having tri-sected recording areas for respective resolutions. Thus, it is sufficient to read out, from any one of the recording areas, picture data of resolution corresponding to the equipment which outputs picture data. In addition, since the picture data of respective resolutions are continuously recorded in the order of reproduction, the seek time is eliminated thereby contributing to realization of high reproduction speed.
