  • Patent number: 7238250
Abstract: An energy absorbing system is provided. The system comprises a fitting having a crack inducing surface extending radially outward in relation to an axis. An energy absorbing structural element formed by a hollow body extends along the axis and has a first end adapted to interact with the crack inducing surface of the fitting so as to radially spread the hollow body. Cracks are formed in the hollow body in response to forces applied in a direction substantially parallel to the axis which forces push the crack inducing surface against the first end. The hollow body may have layers of reinforcing flat material embedded in a matrix material and may comprise a single winding of the flat material about the axis. A number of layers of the flat material in the hollow body may be different in different areas.

  • Patent number: 7239668
Abstract: A new class of 16-ary Amplitude and Phase Shift Keying (APSK) coded modulations, called double-ring APSK modulation, based on an amplitude and phase shift keying constellation in which the locations of the digital signals to be encoded are placed on two concentric rings of equally spaced signal points. The APSK constellation parameters are optimised so as to pre-compensate the impact of non-linearities. The new modulation scheme is suited for being used with different coding schemes. It is shown that, for the same coding scheme, pre-distorted double-ring APSK modulation significantly outperforms classical 16-QAM and 16-PSK over a typical satellite channel, due to its intrinsic robustness against the high power amplifier non-linear characteristics. The proposed coded modulation scheme is shown to provide a considerable performance advantage for future satellite multi-media and broadcasting systems.

  • Patent number: 7238188
Abstract: In an implant for fixing neighboring bone plates of the cranial bone comprising an inner bearing element which covers a spacing gap between the bone plates, an outer bearing element which covers the spacing gap and a connecting device which penetrates the spacing gap and which, when said bearing elements approach one another, connects the bearing elements together by means of a latching or a clamping connection in such a manner that they are no longer able to be moved apart, it is proposed that the two bearing elements be additionally connected by a thread-like tensioning element which is passed through the outer bearing element in displaceable manner and, when tensioned, moves the inner bearing element towards the outer bearing element in order to simplify the process of applying the implant and to ensure a secure connection of the bearing elements.

  • Patent number: 7209800
Abstract: Methods and apparatus are provided for visualizing a control program of a machine tool. The machine tool is provided with operating units. The operating units may comprise machining units, which are provided with tools, and at least one workpiece receiver in accordance with a machine tool configuation. The machine tool is also provided with a computerized control for controlling movement of the operating units in accordance with a control configuration. Sets of control data are read from the control program with a data processing unit. Virtual operating units corresponding to the operating units of the machine tool, linkings of the virtual operating units, and virtual actions of the virtual operating units are automatically determined taking into account the machine tool configuration and the control configuration. The virtual operating units and their virtual actions are then represented for a user in the form of a machine display.

  • Patent number: 7201569
Abstract: Disclosed is a screw compactor comprising two screw rotors which are disposed in screw rotor bores inside a compressor housing and compress a coolant that enters at a coolant inlet and discharge said coolant at a coolant outlet, and a coolant inlet that is arranged within the compressor housing, said coolant being supplied by a coolant-injecting device via a conduit system in order to additionally cool the screw compressor. The inlet is disposed so as to extend into compression spaces that are enclosed by the screw rotors and the screw rotor bores. The aim of the invention is to create a screw compactor in which the compressive oscillations occurring at the inlet do not travel at all or only in an attenuated manner into the conduit system for the coolant-injecting device.
