Abstract: A method of cleaning a drying wire of a paper making machine using at least one pressurized water jet directed against the surface of the wire by a nozzle. The nozzle is supplied with water under a pressure higher than normal water pipe pressure, preferably a pressure of 430-1300 psi. The increased pressure of the water jet reduces the amount of water remaining in the wire due to increased water flow passing through the wire. Consequently the increased pressure of the water jet makes it possible to clean the drying wire during production and web formation.

Abstract: Each workpiece holder of a grinding machine is reciprocated relative to and turned about an axis parallel to that of a wheelhead spindle. Workpieces carried by the holder are brought from in front of and to the side of an abrasive wheel front working surface into contact with the working surface. To prevent the pieces ground by the abrasive wheel from being scratched, after the workpieces have been ground, the wheelhead spindle is translated from a region where the grinding is performed. Simultaneously the workpiece holder is turned from in front to the side of the abrasive wheel working surface. The grinding machine, for instance, comprises two workpiece holders that are diametrally opposed with respect to the abrasive wheel. The holders turn in opposite reciprocating directions. The workpiece holders carry two half-holders for optical fibers having ends to be connected together. The ends of the fibers are simultaneously and coplanarly ground by the machine.

Abstract: In a noise reduction circuit, a sampling pulse is generated for operating a switch in time-coincident relationship with the portion of a signal which is affected by a noise impulse. The signal, applied to an input terminal, is normally passed through the switch to a junction between a capacitor and a noninverting amplifier and is blocked when the switch opens in response to the sampling pulse. A differentiator is connected in a feedback circuit from the output of the noninverting amplifier to the input thereof. The differentiator is disabled when the switch remains closed and when the switch opens in response to the sampling pulse it begins differentiating a voltage which occurred immediately prior to the detection of the noise and supplies it to the capacitor to linearly interpolate the portion of the information signal which is disrupted by the noise impulse.

Abstract: A speech recognition system for an automotive vehicle can effectively eliminate noise generated by vehicle engines, and comprises a group of bandpass filters the pass bands of which are approximately from 500 to 600, from 900 to 1200, and from 900 to 2200 Hz, for effectively passing only the speech sound formant frequencies while eliminating the major frequency components of engine noise less than 500 Hz, in addition to the conventional speech recognizer. Further, it is desirable to provide the speech recognition system with a high-frequency compensator for enhancing the voltage level of the high frequency components of the electrical signal representing spoken instructions at a rate of 20 dB or more per decade increase in frequency and/or a plurality of notch filters fo sharply reducing the major engine noise frequency components at 200, 400, and 800 Hz.
Abstract: An air vehicle has a passenger section, a tail section including variable camber air foil wings and horizontal and vertical control surfaces, ducted fan propellers and landing gear wheels driven by an engine. The landing gear wheels accelerate the vehicle until the fans produce sufficient thrust, at which time the ducted fans propel the vehicle into flight. In one embodiment, while the tail section is detached, the passenger section can be used as a land vehicle. Alternatively, the passenger section and tail section are formed as a single unit in which case the vehicle is used solely as an airplane.
Abstract: A thyristor apparatus employing light-triggered thyristors comprises forward voltage detecting circuits (15) and a thyristor number detecting circuit (17). The forward voltage detecting circuits (15) detect forward voltages applied to light-triggered thyristors (13) to provide detected signals. The thyristor number detecting circuit (17) is responsive to the detected signals to cause light-triggered thyristors in a thyristor arm (U) to be turned on simultaneously in the case where the number of the light-triggered thyristors being supplied with forward voltages is one or more but not more than a predetermined number. Accordingly, if and when an overvoltage is applied to the thyristor arm (U), overvoltage suppressing elements (14) are prevented from being damaged even if partial commutation failure occurs in the light-triggered thyristors.
Abstract: An animal feed composition which comprises a conventional animal feed and a feed efficiency-effective amount of natamycin. The feed composition may comprise natamycin in a range of about 0.000055 to 0.011 weight percent. A premix for incorporation into such animal feeds preferably comprises about 2-25 grams of natamycin admixed with about one pound of an inert carrier, such as rice hulls or calcium carbonate. One pound of premix is added to about one ton of the conventional animal feed.
Abstract: A rotating recording medium such as a video disc placed on a turntable is played back by a signal pickup head movable radially over and across the disc. The disc is removably housed in a disc case composed of a jacket for containing the disc and a lid plate closing a slot in the jacket. When the disc case is inserted, it pushes a jacket opener over and across the turntable while the slot is opened by the jacket opener for removal of the disc. When the disc playback apparatus is not in operation or the disc is being played back, the jacket opener is firmly locked by a locking mechanism against movement into the apparatus, so that forced entry of a disc case into the apparatus is prevented. Since the jacket opener is locked at laterally spaced positions by the locking mechanism, the jacket opener is rigidly kept in the locked position against the operator's undue attempts to insert the disc case.

Abstract: A clock wave is synchronized to the frequency of serial binary data bits. Digital circuitry derives a clock wave by responding to the data bits to selectively (a) increment a reference frequency, (b) decrement the reference frequency, and (c) not change the reference frequency. The digital circuitry divides each data bit into an even number of sub-bits. The binary value associated with a first half of the divided sub-bits of a particular data bit is compared with the binary value associated with a second half of the divided sub-bits of the particular data bit. In response to the derived clock wave and the comparison, the reference frequency is derived, incremented or decremented. The frequency of the source is respectively incremented and decremented in response to first and second relations of the binary value associated with the first half relative to the binary value associated with the second half.
Abstract: A videocommunication network is connected between videophone terminals and a picture bank through voice switching units and wide-band switching units included in central offices. A purely telephonic communication can be established between two videophone terminals during a videocommunication between one of the two terminals and the picture bank. Once the videocommunication has been established between the videophone terminal and the picture bank via network voice switching units, the local telephone line assigned to the videophone terminal is automatically released while only a local wide-band line assigned to the videophone terminal is occupied for exchanging vision signals and also data signals with the picture bank via wide-band switching units.
