  • Patent number: 4023284
Abstract: An Anti-Slip device for footwear, walking sticks and the like, comprises a heel member, a ground-engaging protrusion composed of relatively soft material depending downwardly beneath said heel member, a resiliently flexible flange or membrane of ring form interconnecting said heel member and said protrusion, and a gripping ring composed of relatively hard material disposed on said protrusion. The heel member has a hollow recess above said flexible flange or membrane, and the arrangement is such that so long as no slipping occurs the gripping ring remains in spaced relationship with the ground out of contact therewith but as soon as slipping commences the ground-engaging protrusion pivots sideways by flexing of the flexible flange or membrane and causes a lower edge portion of the gripping ring to be thrust into contact with the ground so as to restrain the slipping.

  • Patent number: 4024536
Abstract: A method and a device for presenting digits, letters and other characters uses a number of signals for representing each character. Said signals are combined with signals from manually operable touch point electrodes. When predetermined electrodes are operated simultaneously with reception of a predetermind character signal or character signal combination, the combining means activates an acoustic, visual or tactile output signal so that a character representing signal code can be recognized. A code conversion between the input signals and the output signals can be provided so that the output character is presented in a code with fewer elements than the input character.

  • Patent number: 4024540
Abstract: A CW FM TR radar receiver responsive to a local tone modulation source and a return signal having a carrier frequency modulated by the tone is particularly adapted to handle a return signal containing different returns derived from multiple targets and/or via multipath. An FM demodulator responds to the return signal to derive a demodulated signal containing the tone frequency. The demodulated tone frequency signal is averaged over a time interval of many cycles of the tone. The phases of the average tone frequency component and the tone of the local modulation source are compared to enable an indication of the range and velocity of a dominant target contributing to the return signal to be derived.

  • Patent number: 4021146
Abstract: A fluidic flow control device comprising at least two generally aligned members having tapering bores therethrough, the members being so arranged as to constitute a convergence followed by a gradual divergence, separated by a gap, the gap communicating with an inlet/outlet or feed port. A cage connects the adjacent ends of the members and forms said port. A system for pumping may incorporate the device between a cylinder charged with pressure gas and an out-feed pipe. In operation, fluid is alternatively drawn in through the gap and into the cylinder and then pumped out by the gas across the gap and into and through the out-feed pipe. A level detector in the cylinder controls the oscillation of the system and an accumulator may be provided to smooth the outflow. Substantially continuous flow may be provided by coupling two systems to a common out-feed pipe.

  • Patent number: 4020473
Abstract: In an automatic telephone information retrieval system, each subscriber entry is encoded according to primary name, secondary name, primary address, secondary address, generic occupation and specific occupation. The entire contents of a local telephone directory may be electronically stored at memory addresses based upon the above encoding. Statistical methods are used to ensure a workable distribution of subscriber entries over the available memory addresses. The information is retrieved from memory by successively dividing the memory into "divided down" portions. Division points, which are boundaries between neighboring divisions, are designated in a form directly convertible into address coordinates of a random access core storage to speed information retrieval. Electronic calculating and comparing circuits automatically search the memory as a function of the division points, and also provide rapid and automatic address range computations.

  • Patent number: 4014548
Abstract: A word game includes multiple-letter tiles as well as single-letter tiles which are placed on successive spaces on a playing board. In order to receive score points, each player attempts to compose words on his own playing board on which is printed a single row of letter spaces. One of the letter spaces, designated as a "master space", has placed thereon a randomly selected multiple-letter tile. Words are composed by locating single-letter tiles in successive letter spaces on the board so that the single-letter tiles merge with the multiple-letter tile. Each of the letter spaces is assigned a score point value, the magnitude of which depends upon distance to the master space. The score point value of a composed word is equal to the sum of the assigned score point values of the starting and ending spaces of the word. Bonus points are awarded when a joker tile used in composing a word falls on a "joker" space.

  • Patent number: RE29165
Abstract: An electric motor is composed of two counter-rotating discs having intermeshing gearing and each carrying a plurality of permanent magnets radially arranged with the same poles at the periphery of both discs. A shield of magnetic material is provided at one side extending partly around the periphery of each of the discs and into substantially the bite of the discs. An electromagnetic is arranged with one pole adjacent the bite of the discs, with means to energize the electromagnet as each of the permanent magnets reaches the bite of the discs to create a field of such polarity as to make the magnetic poles of the adjacent permanent magnets move away from the bite of the discs in the direction away from the shield, utilizing the combined forces of the electromagnetic force and the repelling force of the permanent magnets to effect rotation.
