Patent number: 4818385Abstract: The specification discloses an externally mounted filter for filtering contaminated fluids from a fluid-containing system. Fluid is conducted from the system to a housing, through a filter element inside the housing, and back to the system. The filter includes an indicator, visible to a person viewing the housing, which is configured to assume an indicating configuration upon exposure to a fluid pressure in the filter in excess of a predetermined level. The filter is configured to discriminate between momentary fluid pressure surges and excess fluid pressure in the filter so that the indicator is not prematurely activated.Type: GrantFiled: August 31, 1987Date of Patent: April 4, 1989Inventor: Frank W. Patent number: 4818185Abstract: An electromagnetic pump and generator apparatus for electrically conductive fluids includes a conduit for containing the conductive fluid and apertures in the sides of the conduit. A fluid circuit is defined outside the conduit for containing a quantity of the conducting fluid and is configured so that the conducting fluid in the circuit is in fluid communication with the conducting fluid in the conduit. When used as a pump, a magnet produces a magnetic field across the conduit between the apertures and a device is employed to produce an electric current in the conducting fluid in the fluid circuit. Current in the conducting fluid in the fluid circuit flow across the conduit through the conducting fluid contained therein between the apertures. The current flowing across the conduit together with the magnetic field imparts a force on the conducting fluid in the conduit causing the fluid to be pumped.Type: GrantFiled: October 13, 1987Date of Patent: April 4, 1989Assignee: The University of Tennessee Research CorporationInventor: Igor Alexeff

Patent number: 4817166Abstract: A video camera produces an image of a license plate on a vehicle, and a scanning apparatus finds a license plate number in the image. The identification of the license plate number is verified in a confidence check section by checking for the presence of a state logo. Next, a character extractor identifies individual characters of the number by finding and tracing a contour along interior portions of the character edges, and the contour length, character height, and character width are then checked in a validity checking section to determine whether they are within predetermined acceptable ranges. To correct for obscuring objects on the license plate, a character alignment section determines the top line and baseline of the license plate number and disregards portions of the characters that appear to be outside of these limits, and a license plate frame correction section is utilized to extract the characters when a portion thereof is obscured by a license plate frame.Type: GrantFiled: May 5, 1986Date of Patent: March 28, 1989Assignee: Perceptics CorporationInventors: Rafael C. Gonzalez, Juan A. Herrera

Patent number: 4809434Abstract: The specification discloses a hand held portable facing device to be used primarily for facing polystyrene building panels after installation. The facing device is constructed of a frame, a wire planing element, and tension arms which mount on the frame for keeping the planing element taut. The facing device incorporates an electrical power system which conducts electrical current from an external source, through an electrical power unit, through a safety switch, through the wire planing element, to the frame and earth ground which are electrically interconnected. The current flow heats the wire planing element and enables it to shear a flat polystyrene panel. Guide arms capable of resting on and following the flat panel are incorporated into the frame, and the tension arms and wire planing element are so attached to the guide arms that the wire planing element follows the path of the guide arms leaving a flat smooth surface.Type: GrantFiled: September 2, 1987Date of Patent: March 7, 1989Assignee: Rayco, Inc.Inventors: W. Patent number: 4803762Abstract: A method and apparatus are disclosed for splicing lengths of synthetic fiber tow. The tail of one length of tow and the lead portion of another length are each separated into an equal number of bundles. Bundles from the lead portion are overlapped with bundles from the tail portion to form overlapped pairs of bundles, which pairs are confined in a pair of separate, spaced-apart, open-ended passageways. Then, the overlapped pairs in each of the pairs of passageways are subjected to a plurality of longitudinally spaced-apart jets of gaseous fluid oriented generally perpendicular to the length of the overlapped pairs. This causes fibers in the pairs of bundles from the lead portion and the tail portion to become entangled to form a splice between the lengths of full tow. With certain tows it is preferred that the direction of the jets in one of the passageways of each of the pairs of passageways is opposed to the direction of the jets in the other passageway of each of the pairs of passageways.Type: GrantFiled: February 26, 1988Date of Patent: February 14, 1989Assignee: World Tech Fibres, Inc.Inventor: Richard W. Patent number: 4800767Abstract: An acceleration control device for a hydraulic drive unit having a rotatable control shaft movable between an on position and an off position. An arm is connected to the control shaft for rotating the shaft between the off and on positions. A motive apparatus is movable between a first position which corresponds to the off position of the control shaft and a second position which corresponds to the on position of the control shaft. A mechanical linkage is connected between the motive apparatus and the arm. The linkage imparts movement to the arm in response to movement of the motive apparatus to cause the control shaft to move between the off and on positions as the motive apparatus moves between the first and second positions, respectively. The linkage is configured to provide a substantially nonlinear relationship between the speed of the arm and the speed of the motive apparatus.Type: GrantFiled: June 8, 1987Date of Patent: January 31, 1989Assignee: Builders Equipment CompanyInventor: Daniel P. Patent number: 4796476Abstract: A method and apparatus are disclosed for cross-stream sampling of bulk material from a conveyor belt. The apparatus includes a sampler movable through an arcuate path across the conveyor belt for removing a cross-stream increment of bulk material from the belt. Provision is made for modulating the normal troughing of the conveyor belt and supporting and conforming the belt to the arcuate path of the sampler. When the conveyor belt is modulated to conform to the arcuate path of the sampler and the sampler moves through its arcuate path, the sampler moves in close proximity to the upper surface of the conveyor belt to remove the cross-stream increment of bulk material from the belt. The invention is capable of taking a cross-stream increment when the conveyor belt is stopped or moving. The ability to remove cross-stream increments from a moving belt eliminates interruptions in the flow of bulk material being conveyed on the belt.Type: GrantFiled: October 29, 1987Date of Patent: January 10, 1989Inventor: John B. Patent number: 4792690Abstract: An apparatus and method for monitoring an ultraviolet laser beam includes disposing in the path of an ultraviolet laser beam a substantially transparent crystal that will produce a color pattern in response to ultraviolet radiation. The crystal is exposed to the ultraviolet laser beam and a color pattern is produced within the crystal corresponding to the laser beam intensity distribution therein. The crystal is then exposed to visible light, and the color pattern is observed by means of the visible light to determine the characteristics of the laser beam that passed through crystal. In this manner, a perpendicular cross sectional intensity profile and a longitudinal intensity profile of the ultraviolet laser beam may be determined. The observation of the color pattern may be made with forward or back scattered light and may be made with the naked eye or with optical systems such as microscopes and television cameras.Type: GrantFiled: August 21, 1987Date of Patent: December 20, 1988Assignee: University of Tennessee Research CorporationInventors: Michael P.
