  • Patent number: 4731854
Abstract: An optical system produces an image of a set of characters on a background. A flash light source directs uniform illumination toward the set of characters for a predetermined flash period having an intensity chosen to exceed the intensity of corrupting light from the environment, such as sun light, street lights or car lights. A first polarizer is positioned to polarize the illumination from the flash light source prior to the light impinging on the set of characters, and a second polarizer is positioned to receive light reflected by the set of characters and the background. The second polarizer is cross-polarized with respect to the first polarizer so that it filters out polarized light from the flash light source that is reflected by the set of characters and background. An optical receiver is positioned to receive light from the second polarizer and produces an image of the set of characters and the background. A shutter is used to control the light received by the optical receiver.

  • Patent number: 4727608
Abstract: A fitted bed sheet and a method of making the sheet from a rectangular blank of sheet material are disclosed. Resiliently extensibile strips having catches positioned at predetermined locations along the strips are enclosed within longitudinal, open-ended sheaths extending along opposite marginal edges of the blank. One end of each strip extends out of the open end of the sheath and the other end is anchored to the sheath. The blank is folded inwardly upon itself along fold lines to dispose the sheaths in a spaced-apart, generally parallel relationship on the blank to form laterally opposed double-layered panels. Seams are then formed diagonally across the corners of the panels from adjacent the end of the sheaths to points along the fold lines so that a fitted sheet is formed. When the sheet is placed on a mattress, it is drawn into fitting engagement by pulling on the extended ends of the extensible strips and placing the catches over edges of the open ends of the sheaths.

  • Patent number: 4726501
Abstract: An edge steerage apparatus for steering an edge of a moving web to correct for misalignment of the edge in the direction of travel. The apparatus includes one or more edge steerage units, each unit having a pair of pivotally supported, spaced-apart wheels adjacent to the edge of the web for contacting the moving web. For each of the wheels of the steerage unit, a spherical ball is provided which rotates freely omni-directionally so that the web is engaged between the wheels and the spherical ball. The two wheels of a steerage unit have a slight toe-out so that the web between the wheels is maintained in a taut condition. The position of the edge is monitored in relation to a fixed position and a steerage drive orients the wheels to introduce lateral movement in the cloth between the wheels and at the edge to steer the edge toward the fixed position.

  • Patent number: 4725399
Abstract: A probe for measuring heat includes an elongate rod fitted within a sheath, and a plurality of annular recesses are formed on the surface of the rod in a spaced-apart relationship to form annular chambers that are resistant to heat flow. A longitudinal bore extends axially into the rod and within the cylinders defined by the annular chambers, and an integrated heater and thermocouple pack is dimensioned to fit within the bore. In construction, the integrated pack includes a plurality of wires disposed in electrical insulation within a sheath and a heater cable. These wires include one common wire and a plurality of thermocouple wires. The common wire is constructed of one type of conductive material while the thermocouple wires are each constructed of two types of materials so that at least one thermocouple junction is formed therein. All of the wires extend the length of the integrated pack and are connected together at their ends.
