  • Patent number: 7496181
Abstract: Reduced source spacing for multi-source, multi-detector X-ray imaging systems is provided by allowing channels within an X-ray collimator to intersect within the body of the collimator. As a result, the channels are not independent, and the source spacing can be significantly reduced. Although such collimators have a much more “open” structure than conventional collimators having independent channels, they can still provide efficient collimation performance (e.g., predicted leakage <5%). Several high attenuation layers having through holes and stacked together can provide collimators according to the invention, where the through holes combine to form the intersecting channels.

  • Patent number: 7460436
Abstract: A method for hydraulic fracture imaging consistently integrates ground deformation data and microseismic data. A time sequence of hydraulic fracture images is computed from the combined data by first computing an orientation and location of the fracture. A size of the fracture (e.g., length, width, and opening) and detailed shape is then computed consistent with the computed orientation using a stochastic optimization procedure. This procedure may be performed by selecting a candidate model of the fracture consistent with the computed orientation, computing a predicted surface deformation from the candidate model (e.g., using elastic crack theory), computing a predicted seismic activity from the candidate model (e.g., using Dieterich seismicity rate theory), and comparing the predicted surface deformation and predicted seismic activity with the collected ground deformation data and earthquake locations derived from the collected seismic activity data.

  • Patent number: 7458013
Abstract: The present invention facilitates transparent and cost effective capture, sharing, and re-use of knowledge in informal media such as audio, video, and individual sketching actions. Sketches, handwritings, verbal comments and the likes captured during a session are timestamped and, once completed, automatically indexed and published on a web server that allows for real time, streamed and synchronized replay thereof. All timestamps are converted to a common time base. To control the synchronous replay, multiple treads collaborate based on common base timestamps corresponding to the sketching actions and correlated audio/video stream(s). An enhanced interactive graphical user interface enables a network user to create and capture a session, e.g., annotate an imported image with sketches and verbal comments. The user or others can access the published session in real time and select a keyword or an individual sketch entity from which to begin replay. Transcribed audio stream can also be synchronously replayed.

  • Patent number: 7452406
Abstract: A pressure swing adsorption (PSA) dryer for separating water and carbon dioxide from a gas stream includes two compound adsorbent columns [32, 42]. Each column comprises a primary adsorption material for adsorbing water and a secondary adsorbent that adsorbs carbon dioxide. The secondary adsorbent comprises a solid amine. The secondary adsorbent may be, for example, a highly porous polystyrene matrix with amine groups bonded to the porous resin structure. Preferably, a mixture of the primary and secondary adsorbent materials forms an intermediate layer [38, 48] sandwiched between a top layer [34, 44] and bottom layer [36, 46] of pure water adsorbent material in each of the columns [32, 42].

  • Patent number: 7448131
Abstract: A Bradbury-Nielson gate (BNG) includes a set of evenly spaced, co-planar, and parallel wires. The wires alternate in a repeating ABAB pattern, where all of the A wires are electrically connected to each other, all of the B wires are electrically connected to each other, and the set of A wires is electrically isolated from the set of B wires. Improved fabrication of Bradbury-Nielson gates is provided based on two key ideas. The first key idea is the use of wire positioning template surfaces having wire insertion features with enhanced spacing. Wire insertion features having enhanced spacing allow for non-microscopic assembly of finely spaced wire arrays. The second key idea is the use of two template surfaces, each having wires spaced by twice the eventual gate wire spacing. The use of two template surfaces facilitates making the alternating electrical contact required for a BNG.

  • Patent number: 7446311
Abstract: The present invention provides a method of coating an electrospray emitter with silver and then gold utilizing wet-coating processes. First, the electrospray emitter is immersed in a silver-containing liquid solution to coat the electrospray emitter in a layer of silver. Next, the silver-coated electrospray emitter is removed from the silver solution and rinsed with water. The silver-coated electrospray emitter is then annealed to stabilize the silver layer. Once the silver layer has been stabilized, the silver-coated electrospray emitter is immersed into a gold-containing liquid solution and a voltage is applied. This voltage serves to electrochemically deposit a gold layer onto the silver layer. The gold- and silver-coated electrospray emitter is then removed from the gold-containing liquid solution and rinsed with water and, preferably, with nitric acid.

  • Patent number: 7447547
Abstract: An interface for selective excitation of a biological neural network is provided. The interface includes a microelectromechanical (MEMS) device having a deformable membrane, and a tactile-sensitive neural cell disposed on the deformable membrane. The cell on the deformable membrane senses motion or deformation of the membrane and provides a signal, responsive to membrane motion or deformation, to the biological neural network. Preferably, the deformable membrane and cell have about equal areas, to provide selective excitation. An interface array including at least two such interfaces is also provided. A retinal prosthesis interface array having, in each element of the array, a photodiode within the MEMS device for electrostatically actuating the deformable membrane is also provided. For this alternative, the cells and deformable membranes are preferably transparent.

  • Patent number: 7441178
Abstract: An improved decoder and decoding method for low density parity check (LDPC) codes is provided. Decoding proceeds by repetitive message passing from a set of variable nodes to a set of check nodes, and from the check nodes back to the variable nodes. The variable node output messages include a “best guess” as to the relevant bit value, along with a weight giving the confidence in the guess (e.g., weak, medium or strong). The check node output messages have magnitudes selected from a predetermined set including neutral, weak, medium and strong magnitudes. The check node output messages tend to reinforce the status quo of the input variable nodes if the check node parity check is satisfied, and tend to flip bits in the input variable nodes if the check node parity check is not satisfied. The variable node message weights are used to determine the check node message magnitudes.

  • Patent number: 7426710
Abstract: A cell library which enables reduced quantization over-design in large scale circuit design is provided. Library cells having the same cell function have drive strengths selected to provide delays about equal to a predetermined set of design delays, at a nominal load corresponding to the cell function. In contrast, conventional cell libraries typically have drive strengths which correspond to a predetermined set of cell physical areas. Preferably, the spacing between adjacent design delays is a non-decreasing function of cell drive strength. Such spacing reduces quantization induced over-design compared to conventional cell libraries which have a design delay spacing that is a decreasing function of cell drive strength. On-chip clock distribution is an important application where cell libraries of the invention can provide significant advantages.

  • Patent number: 7423265
Abstract: Near-field electromagnetic devices having an opaque metallic screen with a fractal iterate aperture are provided. More specifically, the aperture is obtained by application of a self-similar replacement rule to an initial shape two or more times. Alternatively, the aperture can be obtained by application of a self-similar replacement rule one or more times to an initial C-shape. Such apertures tend to have multiple transmission resonances due to their multiple length scales. Fractal iterate apertures can provide enhanced transmission and improved spatial resolution simultaneously. Enormous improvement in transmission efficiency is possible. In one example, a checkerboard fractal iterate aperture provides 1011 more intensity gain than a square aperture having the same spatial resolution. Efficient transmission for fractal iterate apertures having spatial resolution of ?/20 is also shown.
