Abstract: A fixed valve stem oil seal comprises cup-shaped inner and outer cases engageable with the valve guide of a piston-type internal combustion engine. A seal element is disposed between radial flanges on the cases so as to be radially movable relative thereto. The seal element is slidably engageable with the valve stem and said cases so as to effect a seal between the valve and valve guide.
Abstract: A rotatable toroidal regenerator has a pair of circumferentially spaced annular seals disposed thereabout that separate the hot and cold sections of the regenerator from one another.
Abstract: A spring support and Coulomb damping system for a compliant hydrodynamic gas lubricated bearing comprises a plurality of cylindrical spring elements arranged in a circumferential and axially aligned array for the support of a flexible foil.
Abstract: A plastic seal housing with an integrally bonded elastomeric seal for use about the rear crankshaft of an internal combustion engine featuring fewer leak paths and requiring no secondary machining of the seal housing subsequent to the molding thereof.
Abstract: A seal for use about a rotatable shaft comprises an annular cylindrical elastic sealing element having a radially inwardly extending flange defining a sealing lip at its radially innermost edge. An axially undulatory wave spring molded internally of the flange induces axial undulations in the sealing lip thereon while acting as a garter spring to maintain the lip in contiguity with a shaft passing therethrough. Upon rotation of the shaft, the undulating sealing lip deflects the fluid to be contained therewith away from the seal, thereby increasing seal effectiveness.
Abstract: An improved electrical connector system for connecting an electronic control system to electrically adjustable automotive suspension components, such as shock absorbers and MacPherson struts, features ease of connectibility and serviceability, superior electrical insulation, fewer individual components, and increased reliability. More specifically, the connector assembly features recessed, axially elongated contacts; integral latching strain relief caps; positive keying surfaces to ensure proper connector orientation; latching arms for removably attaching the connector system to the suspension component; and at least one seal radially disposed between the connector system and suspension component housing to prevent moisture penetration thereinto.

Abstract: An oil deflector adapted to be secured to the valve guide of an internal combustion engine comprises a generally cup-shaped molded plastic member having a seal element in a transverse end wall with lips engageable with both the valve and valve guide in sealing relation.
Abstract: An abrading apparatus for forming a chamfer of precise dimension along the cutting edge of a cutting tool, having a tool guide with first and second perpendicularly intersecting supporting surfaces with a slot formed in the tool guide to accommodate the protrusion of a portion of a grinding wheel having an annular abrading surface. The tool guide can be pivotally adjusted about an axis collinear with a diameter of the grinding wheel that lies in the plane of the abrading surface and positioned within the plane of the first supporting surface.
Abstract: A self-pressurizing compliant hydrodynamic gas bearing includes a resilient support system having a multi-stage spring arrangement for supporting a flexible foil. The compliant and resilient support system enables the bearing to provide greater load capacity under extreme transient loads while accommodating local thermal distortions, shaft misalignment and runout.

Abstract: An oil deflector adapted to be mounted on the stem of a valve of an internal combustion engine comprises a generally cup-shaped molded plastic member having a generally cylindrical section and a transversal end wall section having a bore with a radially inwardly opening groove for the acceptance of an O-ring.
Abstract: An aircraft auxiliary power unit that starts and operates at all operational flight altitudes of an aircraft. The unit can provide constant power output irrespective of altitude and additional power during periods of increased demand.
Abstract: A tool for installing an externally threaded and keyed insert comprising a mandrel for the acceptance of an externally threaded insert. A cylindrical key-set sleeve is journaled on the mandrel and is movable axially thereof so as to bias the keys on the insert to the locked condition. An air chamber supports a piston that is movable upon the introduction of pressurized air into the air chamber to effect locking movement of the key-set sleeve.
Abstract: A method and apparatus for obtaining non-selective microsamples of intracellular material of a living cell while maintaining cell viability. The invention utilizes artificial gravity to effect power cell orientation prior to membrane poration; combined artificial gravity and electric field pulse to effect membrane poration; and artificial gravity to effect forced and controlled extraction of intracellular material subsequent to membrane poration.
Abstract: A system for adjusting the speed ratio of nutational traction drive transmissions in which speed ratio is dependent on the spacing of oppositely convergent cone members rotatably supported on a nutatable axis. The system includes a thread shaft having oppositely pitched threads engaged by carrier nuts in turn fixed to the cone members. Relative rotation of the cone members and the thread shaft is effected by alternately engagable clutch bodies at opposite ends of the thread shaft, the clutch bodies being controlled for relative and opposite rotational direction with respect to the cone members by gear sets linking the cone members and its support.
Abstract: An improved cylindrical tappet for transmitting motion between a camshaft and a valve of an internal combustion engine. The tappet construction affords improved performance by permitting higher lift rates than possible with conventional tappet designs. In addition, cam and tappet face wear and cam walk are minimized due to the construction. The tappet consists of a body portion that is slidably supported in a bore of the engine adjacent to the cam lobe. The body portion has a pocket that is adapted to receive one end of a push rod for actuating the valve upon reciprocation of the tappet body portion. A follower portion is pivotally supported by the body portion about an axis that extends normally to the axis of rotation of the associated cam. The follower portion has a curved cylinder surface which engages the cam lobe and which has a substantially larger radius of curvature than the bore in which the tappet is supported.
Abstract: A tool for forming a head on a plastic rivet while achieving and maintaining "draw up" of the elements to be conjugally secured thereby. The tool may be heated to facilitate head forming and to effect complete polymerization of a plastic rivet, such as a rivet comprising a "B" stage thermoset resin.
