  • Patent number: 5774423
Abstract: The present invention provides an acoustic sensor having one or more segments that are electrically coupled to provide a response corresponding to a hydrodynamic pressure applied to the segments. Each segment contains a substrate of a desired shape with a concavity on an outer surface that is sealingly enclosed by an active member made from a flexible, resilient piezoelectric material. PVDF material is preferably used as the piezoelectric active element. The active member is covered with a protective layer of a suitable material, preferably a polyvinyl material. A single segment may be used as a sensor or a plurality of suitably configured segments may be suitably coupled to form the sensor. The sensor may be used as a hydrophone on a hydrophone cable commonly used for performing seismic surveys for geophysical exploration. In such applications, a plurality of hydrophones are placed equally spaced along the cable. In the preferred embodiment, two hydrophone segments are securely be placed around the cable.

  • Patent number: 5741962
Abstract: This invention provides a closed-loop system for in situ testing of formation fluid conditions and for selectively collecting substantially mud filtrate free formation fluid samples at original formation conditions. The system contains an elongated member having a probe that is sealingly placed against the wellbore formation to withdraw formation fluids. A surface controlled pump controls the flow of a fluid from the formation into a flowline placed in the elongated member. A pressure sensor provides downhole hydrostatic pressure and an acoustic density cell provides the speed of sound in the fluid, acoustic impedance of the fluid and acoustic absorption coefficient of the fluid in the flowline. The system determines the density and compressibility of the formation fluid in the flowline from the speed of sound in the fluid and acoustic impedance of the fluid. The formation of the bubbles are identified or detected from the acoustic absorption coefficient of the fluid in the flowline.

  • Patent number: 5735905
Abstract: The present invention provides a method and structure for absorbing shock in a load bearing prosthesis, particularly in a load-bearing skeletal prosthesis. Where the prosthesis is a hip-joint replacement, the invention provides a method and structure for absorbing shock (1) at the interface between the femoral head and cup, and (2) at the interface between the femur and the stem of the prosthesis. Where the prosthesis is a femoral head prosthesis, the prosthesis is formed using two separate components which are mechanically connected using an elastomeric component. The connection permits relative motion between the structural components of the prosthesis, with the elastomeric component acting as a passive shock absorbing element.

  • Patent number: 5713422
Abstract: The present invention provides a drilling system for drilling a borehole. A motor continuously coupled to the drawworks may be utilized to raise and lower a drill stem to continuously control the weight on bit at a desired value. A second motor rotates the drill stem. A control circuit is coupled to both the motors and receives information from various sensors which includes information about the rate of penetration, weight on bit; hook load, and rotational speed of the drill bit. The control circuit controls the drawworks motor to control the drill stem motion in both directions. In one mode the a desired rate of penetration is maintained by controlling the weight on bit. In another mode, the control circuit causes the drilling to start at an initial rate of penetration and then it starts to vary the rate of penetration according to programmed instructions to optimize the drilling efficiency.

  • Patent number: 5679894
Abstract: The present invention provides a drilling system for directional drilling of boreholes. The system contains a drill string having a drill bit driven by a positive displacement mud motor. Sensors placed at selected locations in the drill string continually measure various downhole operating parameters, including the differential pressure across the mud motor, rotational speed of the mud motor, torque, temperature, pressure differential between the fluid passing through the mud motor and the annulas between the drill string and the borehole, and temperature of the circulating fluid. A downhole control circuit having a microprocessor and nonvolatile memory processes signals from these sensors and transmits the processed data uphole to a surface control unit via a suitable telemetry system. The surface control unit is programmed to operate the drilling system or aid an operator to control the drilling operations in any number of modes in response to the information provided by the various sensors.

  • Patent number: 5680032
Abstract: During forward motion of an electrically-powered vehicle, air is captured at the front of the vehicle and channeled to one or more turbines. The air from the turbines is discharged at low pressure regions on the sides and/or rear of the vehicle. The motive power of the air rotates the turbines, which are rotatably engaged with a generator to produce electrical energy that is used to recharge batteries that power the vehicle. The generator is rotatably engaged with a flywheel for storing mechanical energy while the vehicle is in forward motion. When the vehicle slows or stops, the flywheel releases its stored energy to the generators, thereby enabling the generator to continue recharging the batteries. The flywheel enables the generators to provide a more stable and continuous current flow for recharging the batteries.

  • Patent number: 5668374
Abstract: This invention provides a method for infrared and near-infrared estimations of properties of materials with improved model stability against random and pseudo-random effects and improved assessment of the appropriateness of the model for an unknown sample. Statistical tests are defined for quantifying the model's stability against random effects (B-statistic) and the probability of substantial interpolation error (I-statistic). The method of this invention involves building many different infrared models for each property of interest, either randomly or by other strategies. The models with the lowest calibration errors for their respective calibration sets whose errors are least correlated to one another are averaged to create a composite model. Such composite models have improved stability and accuracy. The consistency with which the individual models (making up the composite model) estimate the same property value for an unknown sample is a measure of the improbability of substantial interpolation error.
