  • Patent number: 5338674
Abstract: A process for producing live, non-pathogenic, vaccines for the pathogens RNA turmor virus utilizes gene-altering technology to produce an altered genome which codes for the antigenic determinants of a pathogen, but has no genes coding for pathogenicity. The vaccine is the phenotypic expression of the altered genome. Specifically, an avian RNA tumor virus env gene is cloned into the non-pathogenic RNA virus RAV-O and the resulting recombinant product is replicated in host cells to provide a recombinant vaccine for the pathogen avian RNA tumor virus.

  • Patent number: 5329814
Abstract: The unbalance of a body (10) to be balanced is indicated in a polar co-ordinate system (52) on a screen (50) of a cathode ray tube (48) by means of a first visible mark (60). The body (10) to be balanced may be rotated by a drive motor (20) by means of a belt (22). A pulse generator (30), producing trains of pulses that are relatively phase displaced by a quarter of a period, is coupled to the drive motor (20). A computer (34) generates a position-indicating signal from the pulse trains, and a reference signal is produced by a reference mark on the body (10) to be balanced and obtained from a pick-up device (28). A position-indicating radial finger (68), which is a second visible mark and rotates on the screen (50) in phase locked manner with the body (10) to be balanced, is obtained from the position-indicating signal. When the position-indicating radial finger (68) coincides with the first visible mark (60), the unbalanced body (10) is positioned in the desired working position.

  • Patent number: 5321578
Abstract: A rainfall detector for detecting a set amount of rainfall and which functions to interrupt the normal operation of an automatic sprinkler or irrigation system upon detection of the set amount of rainfall, includes a rainwater-collection tray having an opening and mounted so that the portion of the opening exposed to rainwater during a rainstorm is adjustable. The rainwater-collection tray may be slidably mounted below a detector housing which houses a switching circuit with two sensors extending into the tray, and which serves to block the rain from the open portion of the tray beneath the housing. Thus, the portion of the tray opening exposed to rain is adjusted by sliding the tray so that more or less of the opening is covered by the housing. The tray may also include posts extending upwardly from the bottom of the tray and terminating below the top edge of the tray for preventing debris from filling the rain-collecting portion of the tray.

  • Patent number: 5318795
Abstract: In the field of staining methods for histology and cytology specimens, the improvements of the invention are three-fold. First included is a drying-clearing step whereby a specimen is cleared by drying. Thus, the use of hazardous chemical-clearing agents to remove washing-dehydrating solution prior to cover-slipping is eliminated. Second, in a staining method using spray staining equipment, the use of a low molarity, combination, bluing-washing solution which serves the dual purpose of a washing solution and a bluing reagent, eliminates the use of water in a staining procedure. Third, and also in a staining method using spray staining equipment, the use of a series of sprays of fresh, essentially anhydrous, washing-dehydrating solution to dehydrate a specimen replaces immersion in a series of washing-dehydrating solutions and thereby decreases the amount of chemical consumed and also avoids contamination of the reagent with water and specimen debris.
