Abstract: To reduce noise in an input signal that may contain speech, first an estimate of the noise level in the signal is obtained. The level of the input signal is then compared with the noise level estimate signal to determine whether speech is dominant. Less aggressive noise reduction is applied to the input signal when speech is dominant than when only noise is present.

Abstract: A method of providing a shared application infrastructure simultaneously to multiple independent virtual private networks with potentially overlapping IP addresses, involves connecting to an underlying layer 1, 2 or 3 virtual private network offering one or more virtual private networks, determining which virtual private network traffic is being received from or sent into, maintaining logically separate routing tables per VPN to allow overlapping addresses, and providing an application which provides a logical instance of the service to each VPN.

Abstract: A method of providing router redundancy within a distributed network of routers, wherein messages are routed within the network based on virtual router identifiers, involves organizing the routers into one or more redundancy groups; assigning a physical identifier to each router in each of the redundancy groups; assigning one or more virtual identifiers to each redundancy group; selecting one of the routers of a particular redundancy group as a currently active router associated with a particular virtual identifier assigned to that redundancy group; advertising among the distributed network of routers for each redundancy group the physical identifier for the active router and information enabling other routers to determine the virtual identifier with which the currently active router is associated; and forwarding messages destined for a particular virtual router identifier to the currently active router based on the physical identifier of the currently active router.
Abstract: A telephone subscriber line device for providing an interface between a legacy telephone circuit based on circuit-switched technology and a packet network has a legacy interface for connection to telephone circuit; a packet interface for connection to a packet network, processing circuitry for converting between legacy telephone signals and packet signals, and a cascadable expansion bus permitting multiple said devices to be connected to a common port on a packet network. Such a device is highly scalable.

Abstract: Physical layer interface system for use in a broadband wireless access communication network is provided. The broadband wireless access communication network comprises a base station, a subscriber station and a wireless communication link for transmitting wireless communication signals upstream and downstream between the base station and the subscriber station. The physical interface system comprises a first physical layer interface for the base station for processing the communication signals upstream and downstream between the subscriber station and the base station and a second physical layer interface for processing communication signals upstream and downstream between the subscriber station and the base station. The first physical layer interface transmits downstream transmission of communication signals from the base station to the subscriber station in a burst mode.
Abstract: An analyte for atomic spectrometry detection is prepared by introducing an aerosol of the analyte into a chamber, and irradiating the aerosol with ultraviolet light in the presence of a low molecular weight organic acid or other suitable photoactivatable ligand donor species to create vapor containing the analyte. The vapor containing the analyte is extracted from the chamber and used for atomic spectrometry detection.

Abstract: A wastewater treatment system has two separate but interlinked tanks containing four different zones, namely aerobic, microaerophilic, anoxic and anaerobic, for the biological treatment of the wastewater, as well as two clarification zones and a filtration unit for separation of solids from liquid. The first tank contains the aerobic, microaerophilic and anoxic zone as well as a clarification zone, while the second dank includes the anaerobic zone, a solid-liquid separation zone and a filtration unit. The aerobic zone is an airlift reactor that contains air diffusers at the bottom of the zone to introduce air into the zone. The air bubbles mix the liquid and its content of microorganisms, and provide oxygen for the aerobic biological processes that take place in this zone. Aeration also produces circulation of liquid between the aerobic zone and its adjacent microaerophilic and anoxic zones that are located at the sides and under the aerobic zone, respectively.
Abstract: A method of detecting leakage in a force main involves placing at least two spaced sensors on the force main. Liquid is pumped through the pipe by means of a pump. The pump is shut down for an interval of time, and during the period following pump shutdown while negative pressure is present in the pipe, signals are generated at the sensors due to noise or vibration resulting from fluid being drawn into the pipe. The position of a leak in the pipe is determined by correlating the leak noise signals generated while the pipe is under negative pressure. Alternatively, the invention can be applied to a pressurized pipe, in which case conditions of negative pressure can be deliberatively created for a period to draw in fluid from the outside.
Abstract: A wafer level package for a MEMS device is made by bonding a MEMS wafer and a lid wafer together to form a hermetically sealed cavity. One or more vias filled with conductive or semiconductive material is etched one of the wafers to form one or more rods extending through the wafer. The rods provide electrical connection to components within the hermetically sealed cavity.
Abstract: A structural film, typically of silicon, in MEMS or NEMS devices is fabricated by depositing the film in the presence of a gas other than nitrogen, and preferably argon as the carrier gas.
Abstract: In a method of managing a content-based network, which is typically XML-based, and optionally may be overlaid on an underlying network having a plurality of network elements interconnected by links, a link state protocol maintains each network element's topological view of the overlay network from the underlying network. A subscription management protocol ensures dissemination of published content within the content-based network independently of the link state protocol.

Abstract: A digital phase locked loop has a digital controlled oscillator, a feedback loop coupled to the output of said digital controlled oscillator, a phase detector for comparing a feedback signal from said feedback loop with a reference signal to produce a phase error signal, and a low pass filter for filtering the phase error signal for controlling said digital controlled oscillator. A bandwidth calculation unit calculates the required filter bandwidth based on the phase error. The bandwidth calculation unit then controls the bandwidth of said low pass filter, which is thus adaptively adjusted in accordance with the phase error.
Abstract: A method and apparatus are provided for conveying low level signals from a first circuit card to a second circuit card. The low level signals are encoded using a simple integer value N, and the low level signals are then communicated to the second circuit card as a sequence of N alternating values. A binary counter is used to generate the sequence of alternating values using the output of a single pin of the counter, although a second pin may be used to generate a clock signal. The invention allows all low level signals to be communicated in a robust yet simple way, minimizing the chance of spurious signals being generated upon hot insertion or extraction without complicated ad hoc solutions.
Abstract: In a method of measuring the thickness of a coating as it is applied to a substrate, wherein the coating is applied as a thin ribbon from a spray gun, at least one surface profile of the applied coating is obtained along a line intersecting the ribbon during relative movement of the substrate and spray gun. The thickness of the applied coating is computed from the obtained surface profile.
