Abstract: A microbiological process for the production of .gamma.-decalactone. According to this process, a culture of the fungus of a particular species of the genus Mucor is incubated with the particular substrate, which is an organic carboxylic acid ester, to produce fermentatively the .gamma.-decalactone. Exact conditions have now been discovered under which .gamma.-decalactone can be prepared in high yields. These conditions are based upon the fermentative incubation of a fungus of the genus Mucor in conjunction with the appropriate substrate in order to obtain the high yield of the desired lactone.

Abstract: The use of novel compositions for preserving aqueous systems normally subject to spoilage is disclosed. The compositions incorporate an antimicrobial agent into an inert and biodegradable carrier. The resulting compositions are stable, active, non-toxic, non-corrosive, biodegradable, compatible with ecosystems while having a flash point above 200.degree. F. and a pleasant odor.

Abstract: The invention is concerned with the 7R/7S-diastereoisomer mixture of the formula ##STR1## in pure form, essentially free of the corresponding (4R)-isomers. The invention also concerns the 2R/2S-diastereoisomer mixture of the formula ##STR2## in pure form which is useful as an intermediate for producing I. In addition, the invention concerns a process for obtaining I by subjecting II to isochromane ring closure. Odorant compositions containing I and the use of I as an odorant are also described.

Abstract: Oil-in-water (O/W) and water-in-oil (W/O) microemulsions of fragrance product formulations are provided. The microemulsions are clear or at least translucent, sprayable, and non-sticky. Novel combinations of anionic surfactant components (a) and hydrophilic coactives (highly water soluble component (b) or a mixture of highly water soluble (b)(i) and less water soluble polar (b)(ii) components) are used to obtain fragrance product formulations that are free or substantially free of ethanol. The anionic surfactants have a hydrophilic-lipophilic balance ("HLB") modified by the use of classes of anionic surfactant components (a) and commercially available hydrophilic component coactives ((b) or mixture of (b)(i) and (b)(ii)), not previously recognized as effective in this type of system.

Abstract: The invention is concerned with a process for the manufacture of substituted furans which are, in particular, flavorants; thereby 4-hydroxy-2-yn-1-ones or acetals or ketals thereof are cyclized with nucleophilic S-compounds to 3-S-furans, whereby this 3-S atom can be optionally substituted, and the acetylene derivatives, the 4-hydroxy-2-yn-1-ones, can be optionally 1- and/or 4-alkyl or alkenyl substituted.
