Abstract: Silica hydrogel is prepared by electrolysis of an aqueous anolyte solution containing an alkali metal silicate and a salt of a non-siliceous anion, such as sodium nitrate or sodium sulfate, in a cell with a cation permselective membrane separating the anolyte and an aqueous catholyte. The electrolysis is effected in the presence of the salt to deposit silica hydrogel on the anode. The hydrogel can be easily recovered from the anode and dried to produce regular and intermediate density silica xerogels having narrow pore size distributions.
Abstract: A composition for polishing silicon and germanium comprises a synthetic amorphous silica polishing agent and a suspending agent selected from the group consisting of water-soluble carboxypolymethylene gums and xanthum gums. The composition may be used for polishing in the form of an aqueous alkaline slurry.
Abstract: Silica gel pellets are prepared by mixing finely divided silica gel with an aqueous ammoniacal medium, compressing the mixture into pellets, and drying the pellets.
Abstract: A method of reducing the lipid concentration in the blood of a patient comprises administering to the patient a lipid-lowering effective amount of silica gel.
Abstract: Spheroidal alumina particles have a combination of high macroporosity, surface area, crush strength and low attrition loss and bulk density. The particles are prepared by an improved external gelation oil-drop process. In the process a slurry of alumina, preferably a microcrystalline boehmite-pseudoboehmite intermediate, is prepared in an acidic aqueous medium and droplets of the slurry are passed through air into a column containing an upper body of water-immiscible liquid and ammonia and a lower body of aqueous coagulating agent. Catalysts employing the particles as a support and having catalytic agents distributed at controlled depths in the particle have excellent initial and sustained activity and durability, especially for eliminating pollutants in automotive exhaust streams.

Abstract: A catalyst composition comprising a composite of ceria, lanthana, and alumina and a catalytically-effective amount of one or more platinum group metals deposited on the composite is disclosed. The composite is prepared by depositing a cerium compound on a calcined admixture of the lanthana and the alumina and calcining the composite. The catalyst is capable of operating in the combustion of carbonaceous fuel at high temperatures, e.g., greater than 2400.degree. F. (1317.degree. C.), for extended periods of time such as 20 hours with low emissions of carbon monoxide and nitrogen oxides.
Abstract: An alumina composition comprising a microcrystalline boehmite-pseudoboehmite intermediate having from about 70 to about 85 weight percent of the total amount of Al.sub.2 O.sub.3 present in crystalline form. The composition is prepared by adding aluminum sulfate and sodium aluminate solutions to a mixture of water and aluminum sulfate solution to precipitate alumina and adjusting the pH to a pH higher than the precipitation pH. The reactant concentrations, and rates of addition, temperatures, and pH's in the precipitation are specifically controlled to form the boehmite-pseudoboehmite intermediate.
Abstract: This invention relates to polishing agents for use in dentifrice formulations. More particularly, this invention relates to the use of silica gels having a water content of 15 to 35 percent as polishing agents in dentifrice formulations.
Abstract: A method of use of calcium nitrite in corrosion control in hydraulic cements that contain metal pieces or structures, and in certain related uses, e.g., snow removal from alite cement bridge decking.

Abstract: Monoliths made by joining ribbed sheet together have a tendency to collapse when the ribs of adjacent layers do not coincide. When the monolith is made by winding embossed sheet around a mandrel there will always be places where ribs do not coincide and which tend to collapse. This deficiency is minimized by using sheet with ribs having un-equal separation. Such sheet is obtained by embossing with a roll designed for this purpose, and the monoliths of this invention have unique features of channel dimensions.
