Patent number: 7832693Abstract: The invention relates to fasteners adapted for use in automobile air bag attachment systems. The fastener comprises a hook to engage a vehicle structure during installation and a pin to lock the fastener in place. Advantageously, the hook portion may be quickly installed and will support the air bag assembly while allowing any positional adjustments to be made prior to locking the fastener by depressing the pin until it is fully engaged in the vehicle structure. An embodiment of the invention incorporates both a locking method to prevent the fastener from being disengaged and a method of releasing this lock if needed for servicing. Another aspect of the invention provides a method for reducing the likelihood of improperly installed parts by preventing locking when the fastener is in a partially installed configuration.Type: GrantFiled: September 29, 2006Date of Patent: November 16, 2010Assignee: Illinois Tool Works Inc.Inventors: Benjamin H. Moerke, James T. Kirchen

Patent number: 7766295Abstract: A support hanger system adapted to hang away from a top chord of a truss assembly using the upwardly facing planar surface of the top chord as the support surface for the downwardly extending support hanger. The support hanger assembly utilizes an elongated threaded member extending away from an operatively connected cross member. The cross member is oriented in transverse relation to the axis running along the length of the elongated threaded member. The cross member is adapted to fit through an acceptance slot extending through an upper base plate structure of the top chord such that the operatively connected threaded member extends downwardly from the upper base plate structure between downwardly projecting leg elements on either side of the acceptance slot. A channel support member adapted to reside between the leg elements may be disposed at a position below the cross member.Type: GrantFiled: July 1, 2008Date of Patent: August 3, 2010Assignee: Illinois Tool Works Inc.Inventor: Martin J. Patent number: 7765689Abstract: A self-locking wire terminal assembly and a shape memory wire termination system includes an electrical terminal constructed with spring legs which provide two opposing points of contact on a mating electrical conductive pin. The points of contact prevent the pin from being removed. The shape memory termination system is formed by electrically coupling a clip assembly to shape memory wire and to an electrical source. In one embodiment, the shape memory wire causes an actuator to activate when the shape memory wire dissipates electrical power. The terminal assemblies may be manufactured by assembling wire with conduction pads onto a continuous reel. The terminal assemblies may be formed from the reel by trimming wire and linkages between the conduction pads.Type: GrantFiled: November 25, 2008Date of Patent: August 3, 2010Assignee: Illinois Tool Works Inc.Inventors: Kenneth G. Irish, James A. Turek

Patent number: 7760514Abstract: Embodiments of the present invention provide a fastening support assembly configured to securely connect a first panel above a second panel. The fastening support assembly includes a shaft having a cap at a first end and a distal tip at a second end. The shaft defines an internal chamber. The distal tip is configured to secure to the first panel. A pin is positioned within the internal chamber, wherein movement of the pin into the internal chamber radially expands the shaft. A portion of the shaft and the pin proximate the cap are configured to substantially fill a hole formed through the second panel when the second panel is secured to the fastening support assembly.Type: GrantFiled: December 8, 2006Date of Patent: July 20, 2010Assignee: Illinois Tool WorksInventors: James F. Latal, Mark Downing
