Abstract: A noise generator is created by having a high pressure gas applied to a Mach 2 nozzle which is combined in an adjustable nozzle assembly with a resonance tube of adjustable length with a closed end forming a Mach disk between them. The resultant compression and expansion shock wave oscillations exit the resonance tube and are propagated between reflecting domes which direct the generated noise around a test article in a housing which contains the generated noise. A muffler includes a water spray chamber and baffled bulkheads to dissipate the generated noise.
Abstract: A novel joint for connecting a closed composite adherend utilizes complementary scarf surfaces on the adherends and then bonds the adherends together. The angle of the scarf is determined by the materials used and the expected loads. Preferably, constant stiffness is achieved through the joint. In alternative embodiments, lap joint areas are included to create localized stress free zones. A method of creating the scarf surfaces utilizes a wrapping technique in which the edges of a lamina of composite material are prepared so as to provide a desired edge termination which permits each layer to be bonded to the adjacent adherend.

Abstract: An improved head up display utilizes a prism to direct the image of a display CRT upward to a semi-transparent combiner element, permitting a substantially smaller vertical profile of the overall structure. An image is presented to a viewer that appears to be at infinity and is indistinguishable from the exterior scene as viewed from that vantage point. In alternative embodiments, the display unit can utilize more than one prism with one or more combiner elements to increase the vertical height of the viewed image of the CRT while dramatically reducing the vertical space required for the display unit in an instrument panel.

Abstract: A concentrating lens has a receiving surface that is substantially spherical and a rear or reflecting surface that is substantially hyperbolic. The reflected radiation is directed to a focusing concavity in the receiving surface from which the resultant concentrated beam emerges, substantially in a direction that is opposite to the direction of the impinging radiation.
Abstract: A travel mug includes a container and a lid in combination. The container has a handle and an annular lip. The lid has an annulus capable of forming a seal with the top side of the annular lip. A cylindrical well in the lid has a vertical dividing wall so that the lid may be readily rotated by hand. Two retaining arms extend from the underside of the lid and engage the underside of the annular lip to pull it into tight abutment therewith. Diametrically opposed gaps in the lip act as passageways for the retaining arms. Diametrically opposed notches in the lid when aligned with the gaps allow a person to drink from the otherwise sealed container.
Abstract: An internal combustion engine is provided with variable duration valve lifters on the exhaust valve train having response characteristics that are different from the valve lifters on the intake valve train. Either the intake valve train can be fitted with variable duration valve lifters having diminished or reduced bleed channel characteristics or stock valve (no bleed channel) lifters may be employed. In both events, the exhaust valves fitted with variable duration valve lifters with relatively greater bleed channel flow characteristics (as compared to intake valves) will open to a progressively greater degree in the mid range to high RPM engine speeds. The particular optimal engine functioning is achieved by precisely matching in a complementary fashion the appropriate degree of variable duration valve bleed flow channel size to the particular cam profile of the engine in use.
Abstract: A backlight system for liquid crystal device display is equipped with a dual lighting system for day viewing and compatible with night vision systems. The day lighting system uses conventional fluorescent or incandescent lamps for full color display during daytime use. The night lighting system uses a light source which is either filtered to remove infrared and near infrared wavelengths or which is chosen from a class of sources which does not emit such wavelengths. The day lighting system is disabled while the night system is in use.

Abstract: A field sequential color head-up display system includes image generating means including a source of light of at least two different wavelengths. A color selective polarizing filter having first and second absorption axes, enables the passage of linearly polarized light of first and second colors. Optical retardation imposed by variable optical retarding means determines the color of the light transmitted by circular polarizing means. Image collimating means apply a generated image of selected colors to an image combiner placed in the line of sight between an observer and a scene, thereby superimposing a generated image over the scene visible to the observer. Holographic elements tuned to the selected wavelengths improve reflection of those wavelengths to the observer.

Abstract: There is disclosed an apparatus and a method for the mechanical removal of whole-tissue meat from the region of the vertebrae of an animal carcass including a support for support at least a part of the carcass. A cutting mechanism makes a longitudinal cut in the meat along the line of the vertical dorsal protrusions of the vertebrae. There is also provided a substantially rigid clearing mechanism having a substantially fixed shape and causing relative movement between the support and the clearing mechanisms such that the clearing mechanism is able to move longitudinally along at least part of the carcass to force the meat away from the vertical and lateral protrusions of the vertebrae and, if present, at least part of the length of the ribs extending from the vertebrae.

Abstract: A mast radiator is affixed to a glass or other non conductive exterior panel of a vehicle and is provided with a dipole element and one or more parasitic elements to exchange signals, with gain, between the mast and the antenna of a portable cellular telephone unit within the vehicle. In the preferred embodiment, a separate base unit with parasitic elements is mounted on the same glass panel on the opposite surface and opposite the base of the mast radiator.
Abstract: A horn speaker in which a cooling device is attached near a moving coil which vibrates a diaphragm. The cooling device may be attached to the inner periphery of a bobbin which is connected to the diaphragm and around the outer periphery of which the moving coil is wound.
Abstract: A method and apparatus for continuously forming and depositing a layer of monomolecular amphiphilic molecules on a substrate, which include the continuous or intermittent removal of unused film after a substrate dipping. The amount of "dwell time" in which the film resides on the surface of the support media is controlled. A rotatable barrier provides a movable "film front" to achieve repeatable film pressures, consistencies and viscosities of high precision and accuracy.
