    Abstract: A durable low Tg Sb-stabilized Mo+W phosphate based glass composition exhibiting superior resistance to attack by boiling water, humidity and acids resulting from the addition of Sb to Mo+W phosphate based glass compositions. Specifically, the present invention discloses a glass composition comprising in mol % on the oxide basis, of 0-40% R2O where R includes the alkali metals (Li, Na, K, Rb or Cs) as well as Ag and Tl, 0-20% XO where X includes the alkaline earth metals (Mg, Ca, Sr or Ba) as well as Cu, Zn, Cd and Pb, 15-80% MoO3+WO3, 0.5-60% Sb2O3, and 10-40% P2O5. Additionally, the Sb-stabilized Mo+W phosphate based glass composition can contain a total of 0-5%, in mole percent (mol %) on the oxide basis, of glass forming oxides including, but not limited to, B2O3, Al2O3, SiO2, TeO2, Ga2O3, GeO2, transition metal and rare earth metal oxides, or mixtures thereof.

The apparatus further includes at least one secondary burner having gas-emitting fourth and fifth regions. The fourth region of the secondary burner emits oxygen and the fifth region of the secondary burner emits a combustible gas.

    Abstract: An optical waveguiding fiber has a photosensitive core and a cladding that includes a photosensitive inner cladding region adjacent the core and an outer cladding region. The inner cladding region and the outer cladding region have substantially equal indices of refraction. The photosensitivity of the inner cladding region is sufficient to cause a modulation of the index of refraction of the inner cladding when exposed to ultraviolet light. In another aspect of the invention, the optical fiber includes a grating in the core, which extends radially into the inner cladding region. The core and the inner cladding region of the optical fiber are doped with concentrations of Ge and B sufficient to impart photosensitivity to the inner cladding region, and to result in an index of refraction in the inner cladding region substantially equal to the index of refraction of the outer cladding region.

Also disclosed is an optical waveguide in which light at a wavelength &lgr; can propagate in at least a first and a second mode. The waveguide has an effective index of refraction n1 with respect to the first propagation mode of &lgr;, and an effective index of refraction n2 with respect to the second propagation mode. A grating formed in said waveguide and having a period approximately equal to(&lgr;/2)(n1−n2).

The propagation constants of one core mode and one ring mode are different at wavelengths except for at least one wavelength &lgr;0 whereby power transfers between the two cores at &lgr;0. At least a portion of the fiber optic filter fiber is wound around a reel to subject it to a continuous curvature, the radius of which determines the amplitude of the attenuation. Such fibers are useful in fiber amplifiers in which the central core contains active dopant ions.

    Abstract: A latch for a thrust reverser duct on an aircraft engine. The latch accomplishes work during both the closing stroke and the handle folding stroke. An outer handle 100 release trigger 112 can lock an outer handle 100 to an inner handle 60 to fix the relative position of the outer handle 100, the inner handle 60, an idler link 80, a rocker link 78 and a secondary link 75. While they are in fixed position, the parts act as a closing handle unit 125 during the closing stroke. Once the closing stroke is completed, the inner handle 60 is locked into a fixed position with hook arm 40 and a primary link 70. The outer handler release trigger 112 can then be disengaged and the secondary link 75, the rocker link 78 and the idler link 80 work to provide mechanical advantage during the folding of the outer handle 100.

    Abstract: A seat assembly for commercial aircraft or other vehicles has features that reduce head excursion in high impact events such as crashes or collisions. These include the use of low-elongation seatbelt material and high seatbelt anchor location. Another feature which reduces head excursion is an articulating seatpan. The bottom seat cushion is guided by rollers in tracks to follow a prescribed motion under forward inertial load. As the inertial load is applied, the seatpan travels forward and tilts upward. This reduces forward pelvic rotation which, in turn, reduces head excursion. Other features which limit pelvic rotation are the use of dynamically stiff foam for the seat cushion, and a relatively steep initial cushion angle/cushion contour.

    Abstract: The invention provides a thermal insulation blanket suitable for removable mounting on a structure such as the exterior of a reusable launch vehicle. In one embodiment, the invention include a batting layer with a rigid screen embedded within it. A cover layer is secured over the batting, and a plurality of fasteners are held by the screen in a position where they extend out from the blanket to be mounted on the exterior of the space craft. The blanket can include two layers of batting with the screen disposed therebetween. The structure would have corresponding mating fasteners on its exterior to which those extending out from the blanket cover would be joined for a secure mount. The blanket can be formed of a first and a second batting layer with the screen positioned therebetween. In a preferred embodiment, a cover would be positioned over the batting layers, and the blanket would be quilted to hold the layers and cover in close proximity.
