  • Patent number: 4221865
Abstract: Improvements in the sensitivity and reproducibility of nephelometric endotoxin determinations using endotoxin-activated enzyme from Limulus amebocyte lysate are achieved by contacting endotoxin-coagulated lysate with an ionic surface active suspending agent, generally a mixture of detergent and suspending agent. Instrumentation improvements further enhance results.

  • Patent number: 4211015
Abstract: An improved method and apparatus is disclosed for producing frozen particulate compositions from liquid feedstock. A continuous stream of liquid feedstock is passed through an orifice and into a liquid freezant without the orifice contacting the freezant. Compositions produced by this improved method have low proportions of fine and large particles, yielding particularly beneficial results in the case of quality control materials. The compositions are advantageously employed in automated weighing and filling apparatus.

  • Patent number: 4208132
Abstract: Static charge accretion as a result of particle handling is prevented or reduced by contacting the particles with an ionized noble gas. Particularly beneficial results are obtained by contacting dried, particulate animal body fluid with an ionized gas while conducting sieving, blending or dispensing operations.Apparatus for contacting the ionized gas with particles so as to control static charge accumulation employs a flowthrough ionized gas, preferrably a noble gas, in which ionization takes place outside of the apparatus particle treatment region.

  • Patent number: 4104030
Abstract: An optical density technique for measuring protein concentration generally, or for measuring minute traces of endotoxin in an unknown material by the clotting of Limulus lysate protein. After the clotting step, the clotted protein is separated and digested in from 0.1 to 0.4N strong alkali such as sodium hydroxide and then photometrically analyzed, for example with the Lowry test. Greatly improved stability of a quantitative endopoint is achieved under this circumstance.

  • Patent number: 4089944
Abstract: The rate of solubility of a freeze-dried solid composition containing therapeutic amounts of anti-hemophilic factor (AHF) is greatly increased by carrying out the solubilization in the presence of at least a critical threshold amount of a water soluble carbohydrate. The carbohydrate is incorporated into the AHF composition in sufficient quantity to provide at least 2 weight units of carbohydrate (expressed in grams) per 100 volume units of AHF solution (expressed in milliliters). This enhanced rate of solubility permits rapid treatment of hemophilic patients.

  • Patent number: 4040234
Abstract: A rack assembly comprising mounting means for containers, e.g., test tubes, a lid spaced from said mounting means which cooperates with orifices in the containers, a flexible sealing sheet for sealing the orifices interposed between the lid and mounting means, and means for spacing the lid from the mounting means and for gripping the sealing sheet. Containers are inserted in the mounting means. The sheet is then placed over the containers, and the lid in turn placed over the sheet so that the sheet seals the container orifices as the containers are maintained in substantially fixed position by the mounting means. By agitating the rack assembly the containers held therein are also shaken. The rack assembly is easily re-used by stripping off and discarding the sealing sheet.

  • Patent number: 3980227
Abstract: Samples which are to be processed or analyzed in the laboratory are placed in small vials or cuvettes. Groups of cuvettes are placed in arcuate carriers, which are then mounted about the periphery of a rotator head. The rotator head has two selectable motions. It can rotate at a higher speed on a vertical axis for an automatically timed period, thereby subjecting the samples to mild centrifugal settling or sedimentation, or it can rotate at a lower speed about an inclined axis, thereby subjecting the sample to mild agitation or mixing.
